I know that I had found this info once before on a website, But I have been searching all of the ones in my favorites and can not find the answer. I've searced this site and others for 5 hours now.
What I am looking for is the corespodence of the tranny #'s on the top of the bell housing that generally say FM522 or WM533. I Know that the "F" is for FWD and the "W" is for AWD, The "M" is for manual, and the "5" is for how many gears. What I need to know is what all the other numbers are. I have 4 "FWD's That iam am looking at and 2 are Fm5222 and the other's are FM5221. There are other numbers after that, but I am not sure if they are prod code, or model, or ratio. I know that I had a DOHC galant tranny around that had different ratio (shorter), but I'm not sure if this is one of those.I am having a mess of a time with four trans that I have right now that I am unsure of what vehicle, motor size and model that they are for. I need to figure this out to both organize what I have, and so i can put the correct tranny in the vehicle I am working on. Any info that is helpfull, would be gratly appreciated. If you have a link send it my way.

Thank you all for looking, and please only info that is backed by knowledge and not guesses, I already have a few of those. ;)
Steve.

Thank you that does help! I am still searching for the page that I found once before but with not much luck. I did find one thing out that was a great help. on the F5M221, the 3rd number (1) is reference to the cam, i.e. single over head cam. So all of you out there might want to keep that in mind also because the trans look almost tottaly identical externally from the 2.0 to the 1.8!! So buyer be-ware when you find one that is supost to be from a 2.0, it might actually be a 1.8.

Thank you, Steve.
