Remanufactured 100mm cranks???

I was looking into stroking my motor in the near future and was wondering, is it worth the extra money to get a brand new crank verses a remanufactured crank? Slowboy charges an extra $400 for a brand new crank in their stroker kits and I was wondering if that was worth it. I'll be going with either a stage 2 or a stage 3 with manley rods instead of aluminum rods at a compression ratio of about 8:1(on the stage 3 kit you can choose compression and if you look on the options on the bottom its says "aluminum rods or manley your choice!").

The reason I would choose that compression ratio so it would be easier to run the boost that some of the larger turbos that work well on strokers(FP Red or larger)are effecient at(like 25+ psi). Anyone with strokers please chime in! thanks!
 
If you have the coin to spend on a new crank, go ahead since you're getting a fresh piece with less potential for problems. I didn't and picked up a reman SBR crank which has worked perfectly thus far. Like anything else, the machining work on a cut crank is critical to ensuring that everything will hold together well. I would also recommend having your engine builder magnaflux it to check for any cracking or defects.

I agree with Andy -- If you have the couple hundred dollars extra, it is definitely worth the piece of mind to have a new crank.

You can pick up an Eagle crank now for around $700 or less at several places for our setup -- 6-bolt or 7-bolt.


Personally, I have had excellent luck with my FFWD butcher'd & Cryo'd 7-bolt stroker setup using Eagle rods and Ross SOB'd stroker pistons at 9.0:1 compression.



Again, if you are going to use a reman'd crank, be sure to have it magnafluxed, then balanced and polished.

If I could do it all over again, I would have purchased an Eagle crank (which weren't out when I did my motor).
 
twicks, how do you like the butcher'd crank? I'm looking into having that done for my 100mm crank, and just was wondering if it was really worth the money or not.

First of all, like has been said above, there is a certain amount of peace of mind that goes along with a new crank. Would I hestitate to use a Reman crank? HELL NO, but if had the extra $$ for a new one, I'd pick it up.

The eagle is nice as well. SBR Stocks quite a few of these.

For rods, if it was a street car, I'd go with the Manley rods. The AL's are nice, but too much maintence for a street car IMO. The compression ratio is pretty decent. Even up to 8.5:1 with pump gas, you should have very little problems. The maps on those turbo's care more about airflow then pressure, and on a 2.3L, you'll see higher airflow with less boost.

Wow! what a great response from everone, espcially andy and sbrchris, thanks for your input! its really appreciated.

One more thing though, how well do eagle rods(or any H-beam rod) hold up in strokers? The reason I ask is because of the rod angles bieng pretty stressfull on the rods and with the larger amounts of torque that strokers produce it was something of a concern for me. conventional wisdom for me would be to spend the extra money on the I-beam rods on a sort of "overbuilt" motor as I don't plan on running 800whp but if the short block is built for that and I'm only pushing like 500-600whp reliability would be there so to speak....andy, sbrchris what do you guys think?????
 
I don't see any problem using the Eagle rod with your setup. I am making close to 700whp with the current setup with no problems to speak of.

As for the butchered crank -- I absolutely love it! I wish I picked up the Groden rods instead though. The car revs like a crotch rocket! (I am also running a quartermaster twindisk clutch -- LIGHT!)
 
awesome, I plan on sending my crank out to get butcher'd in a few weeks. I also plan on a ptt twin disk, and manley I beam rods, so I'm hoping it will rev as fast as you say yours does:D
