What is the difference in a long block and short block???

And how do I know what kind I have?

96 eclipse non turbo

The difference between a short block and a long block is that if you are building your engine the bottom end only is the short block. Meaning the block, rods, pistons, and crank assembly. If you have the head bolted on top of the short block that is a long block.

If you have a motor in your car you have a longblock.

A lot of people actually think there is a difference between the two. Im not sure how that got started but what he said is correct. Whole motor is long, and with no head its a short.

All shortblock means is a block with its pistons, crank and the other bottom end parts all assembled vs a longblock which is that plus the cylinder head, front case, tming belt components, oil pan etc...

yeah there is no advantage, it's simply terminology referring to the bottom end only (short) versus the whole engine (long).
