manual transmission fluid and rear differential fluid, transfer case?

hi, please claify the different fluid for the transfer case, manual transmission and the rear differential please.

i have been using what the user manual saids. sae 75w-85w for the tranny and the transfer case.

and the rear diff i used some gear oil rated at sae90.

but i heard some people used something called a syncoshift for both tranny and rear diff?

so can i used the same fluid for all 3?

Another thing i would like to know is, lucus makes this transmission leak liquid which helps stops the seals from leaking in the transmission. can I use that on the rear differential or transfer case.....? I know for a fact that my rear diff seal is leaking but if i can use that on all 3 i might just put some in just incase so i can get through the winter and start fixing it in summer.

if not which kind of fluid can i used to stop the seal from leaking?

I use redline synthytic oil... heavy for rear dif and t-case and lightweight for tranny

The tranny, transfer case, and rear diff CAN use the same fluid, but it's not the best option.

You generally want a lighter fluid (lower viscosity) in the tranny, because it help with shifting at the cost of protection since their are syncros.

In the transfer case and rear end it's just constant gear to gear interaction, so a heavier fluid is fine.

Most people run:

-Rear End: RedLine Heavy Shock Proof
-Transfer Case: Redline Heavy Shock Proof

Transmission: A lot of people run different things. The common options are BG Syncroshift I, and II (Synthetic), GM/Penzoil Syncromesh, Redline MTL Or Redline. Most people pick a lighter fluid like BG syncroshift/Syncromesh as it shifts better at the cost of protection.

Heavy T-Case Fluid and Diff fluid?

What do you reccommend for people who live in extreme climates? It doesn't get tooooo cold here in Alaska, but I still run 5w-30 in the winter and 10w-30 in the summer for crankcase oil just in case.

Your car's "favorite gear oil" does depend on your climate, to an extent.
I run straight MT90 in my transmission and x-case, and 75w85 in the rear diff, personally. I live in a hot climate (too hot, really. I need to move). But I digress...

Cars in colder climates seem to prefer either a mixture of Redline MTL and MT90 or just straight MTL for the transmission and x-case. I lived in Illinois for a short while when I owned my GST, and used a 50/50 mix of MTL/MT90 during that time, for example.

The preferred gear oil has been something of a debate - some people swear by certain brands, but Redline has proven itself time and again to be the "favored" and time honored choice for many DSM drivers (myself included - I wouldn't consider using anything else).

i live in canada so it's cold in the winter.

i just don't get why you guys use a lighter weight oil in the rear diff.

if anything i thought you would use the 75,85 in the tranny and xfer, and the thicker 90 in the rear diff since u want better shifting?

May be a stupid question, and I'm pretty sure I know the answer but I was told that the 90's the t-case and trans share fluid? Sounded wrong, but I need a new trans now (fluid leak) and wanted to make sure that this would have no effect on my t-case?

royal purple or GM/ Pennzoil synchro shift are very poplular and common. I am using gm synchro shift with the best results.
However I have know people to try 3 or 4 fluids to find out what was best for their car.

That's wrong. I've helped a friend swap fluids on his 90 AWD, and both t-case and trans were seperate.

I don't think a DSM like that exsists.

Use the gm syncromesh + heavy duty shock proof for the tranny. Straight heavy duty shock proof for the rear diff and transfer case!

Light weight shockproof is a lil smoother than the heavy stuff in the trans. 1qt of light shock proof with 2 qts of synchro mesh works well.

I went with red line products all the way from transm, transfer case, and rear diff. and car shifts like butter. however some people love the syncro shift its just ## preff. go to summit, good price and quick delivery :thumb:

I agree 100%. When I spoke to the redline tech's they said this was the best mixture for the trans and dsm'ers have proven the shockproof combo in the transfer case and rear end are good to go.

Can you tell me where to get some of these. Ive never heard of most of the brands your talking about. Also is it better to go with different fluid than stock for the tranny (auto remember) for a heavy mod 1/8 mile race/daily driver?
