Hi guys. I am in desperate need of help. I have a 96 GS with about 101k miles on it. The car runs perfect except for one thing.

Sometimes when I start the car, the RPMs boost to 1500 and slowly go down and hold steadily at 1000 when I idle or hit clutch. Car drives good during this !! Here is when it goes bad. Sometimes when I start the car, the RPMs boost anywhere from 800 to like 1200 without much strength. Basically it immediately drops and looks like the idle is struggling hovering from 600 to 1000. Then as soon as I drive the car, the idle will not hold as soon as i come to a stop and put my foot on the clutch. The idle dies, and stalls out the car unless i start pumping the gas on neutral to keep the idle up. This causes a major headache as it takes about 5 minutes of driving before the idle stabilizes itself again.

THIS IS REALLY BAD BECAUSE IT IS PUTTING A STRAIN ON MY ENGINE AND STARTER.

I really need advise guys :( I have take the car and got a tune up hoping it would solve the problem. But it didn't. But mind you, i am not impressed with those mechanics either! I complained after the tune up that the problem was still persisting, and all they did was adjust the idle higher, which isn't solving the problem because like i said, sometimes it starts high sometime is starts struggling. It is an on and off thing.

Any ideas what it could be?? The problem did start around October NYC, so maybe its the cold start sensor or something. But then again, sometimes the car starts perfectly in the cold and maintains, sometimes it starts and it strugglers when its midly cold.

GUYS PLEASE HELP!! A FELLOW DSMER :(

Sounds like you just have a good vauum leak. Check all your vacuum lines for cracks/tears.

Aren't they supposed to do a thorough check on vacuum lines during tune ups?? Even replace some??

Sucks i paid like 200 for the damn tune up!! Cause he gave NGK sparks and a new filter for my CAI

Yes, they SHOULD have checked all the lines, but like you said you weren't impressed with the mechanics. It does not sound like idle surge which leads me to assume a vacuum leak. You would be surprised to find where all those hoses can leak/crack that are not visible to the naked eye. To do a thorough check of the vacuum lines you will have to disconnect each one a pressurize them to check for leaks. However, in this situation it sounds like a fairly large leak so it shouldn't be too hard to track down. Make sure not to overlook the brake booster line and Good Luck :)

im havin the same probs.. when i push in the clutch car will come down to idle and sputter then sometimes stall.. switched out the ISC but no change.. recently put in new clutch n lightwieght flywheel.. also changed master n slave cyl. chekked for vaccuum leaks cant find any.. how do u do a vacuum leak test? and where is the brake booster line??? please help this is driving me crazy!!!
