I'm planning to turn up the boost on my completely stock 91 TSi. I was wondering what sort of boost I could run with the stock fuel system safely. I plan to get a DSS MBC, and a Defi Boost Gauge. I haven't done any free mods yet, should I do those before I turn up the boost? And, how hard is it to just remove the metal aircan and clamp a K&N on the end of the intake pipe? I think there are some vaccum hoses coming off of the air can, would those be a problem? Any tips, information, or links to information you can give me would be very helpful.

-Thanks

first, you can clamp on a k&n filter, as long as you get a kit and not just the filter, go on ebay and buy a cheap $30 intake, and use it with a k&n filter and it'll work perfectly. You can safely turn up the boost to about 15-16 psi, as long as your not redlining eevry gear through town, it shouldnt hurt too much. Check out the joe p mbc's, there awesome and reliable, and cheap too. If you want more info on anything about these cars, you can do either of the following
a. search the forums here

hope i helped. :dsm:

You need a boost guage first, then make sure you have the proper maintenance, then you can start modding.

You don't need any kit to clamp a K&N on a 1g. It really couldn't be any easier. The vacumm lines you are talking about are for the Bcs. If you put in a MBC you are ditching the Bcs anyway. On a bone stock car I wouldn't turn it up that much. Make sure your car is in pefect running order before doing any of this though. As in new fuel filter, oil, oil filter, plugs, wires, good timing belt, 91 or better octane, and so on.

1. You'll need a boost gauge and a datalogger.

2. Crank up boost until your engine starts knocking.

3. Crank down boost until your engine stops knocking.

4. Max boost achieved.

What sort of plugs should I get, I think I've heard that NGKs are good. But I don't have the slightest clue on how "hot" or "cold" of a plug I would need. As for a Datalogger, what sort of datalogger? How expensive do those run, and what is one that you would reccomend?

Check out this site I'm working on.
It's under heavy construction, and some things like the amount of horsepower a mod will give you is estimated, but it should help with the first steps of modding. Again, this is based off of what I've done to my car and learned about the process, so proceed at your own risk. I'm open to any opinions and/or suggestions as well. Good luck.

I would say 13-14psi on the stock fuel system. A datalogging device and a boost gauge are recommended. Also, make sure your car is in the condition to handle extra boost.

i have a few questions relating to this,...
1: isnt 14 psi stock anyways?

2: ive heard a lot of people talking about doing "all the free mods" i know of one,...remove the aircan,....(fill in the blanks please)

I have gotten no more than 10psi stock boost. I got that because of my Dejon intake too. It goes to 10psi, then it falls back down to 7-8ish psi. as i get higher in revs.

1: You can get about 8 or 9 psi in warm weather and about 10psi in Colder conditions.
2: Check out the site.... all mods that have "n/a" for the price are "free mods." Basically anything that can be done to improve performance without purchasing an aftermarket product counts as a "free/cheap mod."

-Air can and silencer removal (free)
-Custom Catch can (cheap)
-Intercooler mod and cleaning (cheap)
-boost control solenoid and restrictor mod (free)
-blow off valve mod (cheap)
-fuel pump rewire mod (cheap)
