well, this is probably going to be kinda long, so get comfy. first, it's a 91 tsi 5 sp, 14b @15 psi, fmic, 550's, 255 pump, afpr, logger, afc, all other supporting mods.

i blew my b16g a couple of weeks ago, and replaced it with a used 14b in good condition. the car has been running great since friday when me and my friend did the swap, but today while driving i tried to boost, and it hesitated at about 4500 rpm, then boosted fine. it got gradually worse, and now under full throttle it wont go past 4500 rpm, just stutters badly. as far as i can tell all the logger readings are normal.

at the same time, i noticed the air temp reading on the logger was at 81.2 degrees. it usually stays at 80.4 degrees unless i'm in stop and go heavy ass traffic. when it goes to 81.2 degrees, it kicks the rpms up, like after a while it will idle at 2300. this has been happening since i got the car 6 months ago, and it was never really a bad problem until today. usually when the temp goes up like that, i'll drive normally for about 6 blocks and the temp will go down at idle. now it won't. it stays at 81.2.

any help is greatly appreciated.
 
Does it happen in every gear? only under WOT? Sound like a boost leak test would be a good start.
 
yeah, it happens in every gear only at wot. if i ease into it, it will rev past 4500, just not at full throttle.
 
Well since you have those fuel mods..is everything setup right? How much fuel are you taking out at WOT? What is the fuel pressure of the afpr set at? Did you log the car or anything to see timing/knock..etc?

Could be a boost leak also.
 
my car did a very similar thing and it was a BIG boost leak...id say check for boost leaks and check plugs...
 
since going from the 16g to 14b, i leaned it out a bit, afc is at about -10. it's strange though, on the 16g, my injector duty cycle was like 109% at WOT. it hasn't dropped much since downsizing turbos. it ran fine even at WOT with the afc settings where they were since friday, including a 120 mile road trip to play in the snow. the car did awesome until today, when it got progressively worse. it does sound like a rev limiter at 4500 rpm, it just bogs down. i'll try and lean it out some more. what would you guys recommend? and what would i need to do a boost leak test? i have wanted to do one for a while, but don't want to pay a shop to do it.

Does it black smoke when it bogs?. Fix the boost leak before you make any AFC adjustments. When u find the boost leak, your afc will be to lean and you could risk internal engine damage.
 
how do i do a boost leak test myself? what do i need? i also thought maybe my injectors could be dirty, or a clogged fuel filter. as far as i can tell there's no black smoke.

what about the air temp reading? any thoughts? i don't know what would make the air temp reading go up like that. thanks for all replies.
 
You didn't put the "ring" back in there did you when you swapped turbos? I've seen people do that and sometimes the ring turns sideways and makes the car run like shit.

its the ### ass ring that mitsu puts in there to center the turbo and the manifold. you dont need it, the bolts do it and its not that hard to center it w/o the ring. So take it out.
 
I belive that you are getting to much fuel. You said that your duty cycle is 109% but how much fuel is actually going through that cycle. I did the same thing that you did 16 to a 14 and I had the bigger injectors and the 255 fuel pump. I also was BOGGING @ 4400. I though what would it hurt to switch back to the stock fuel pump. It made a world of differnce. A bigger fuel pump will shoot more fuel through those injectors unless controlled by a Adjustable fpr. Try this and adjust the afc and let us know. Hopfully it is exactly like what happened to me and hope this helps you out
 
i thought it might be rich, too, but then why was it running just fine for 3 days, including a 120 mile trip to rally the crap out of it in the snow? i'm gonna go work on the pos today and see what i come up with.
 
i have this same problem
i just got my car today but i think i might have a boost leak or something..i opened it up on the highway and like it wouldnt accelerate past 90 it seemed... like i didnt wanna push it ,but it felt like it was bogging. and like i drove it just now and like 1-3 grear is fine then like forth it feels like its bogging. similar to the clutch slipping... what do u think?
 
Have the two of you even read the thread?

1. Plugs and wires.
2. Boost leak test.

I have the same issue + my colling fan is on all the time. I'm not sure if the 2 issues are related or not. I have tried boost leak test, plugs, wires, coils, my rockers are fine, compression at 175 across, timing is dead on, temp sensor is new, fan relay is OK. If any of you resolves your problem please write back here what the solution was. I will do the same.
