Right before Christmas during that storm that dumped ice and snow all over Ohio, someone spun out in their Toyota Tacoma and took out my wife's 1996 Eclipse GS-T (Both she and the baby are ok LOL. This used to be my car and she did race it on occasion. Well, we found out the other day that the guy in the Tacoma's insurance company is totaling the Eclipse. They were quoted about $5000 to fix just the body work . So I asked my wife what she wanted to do. I suggested checking this site for another Eclipse because she REALLY liked the GS-T and is sad to see it go. She said that she could really use something with 4 doors. So I mentioned the Galant VR4's to her. Her eyes lit up right away with the thought of having a 4 door car that is Turbo-Mitsu powered. :D

So, here's my question: I am currently looking for a VR4 to replace the Eclipse. What do I need to look out for on the Galants? What are known common problems? What should I stay away from?

Basically anything you can think of that would help me out. I would really appreciate it.

glad to hear your family is alright, and sad to hear about the car. I know a few people around here who G-VR4s, 1 runs a bike rack with 2 10 speeds at the street races, talk about sleeper. I know both of them post on the galant forums www.galantvr4.org sorry I cant give you any technical info on the car, but maybe they can on this forum as well as the specialized galant forum? little more feedback from various places. Best of luck.

Thanks for the heads-up. I'm checking it out right now.

The galant's have the same basic issues as the 1st gen t/e/l's, some people get rid of the rear steer because it can be a little quirky at times. But damn are these cars fun. Mine is like total sleeper. I left the exterior pretty much stock except for a few custom touches: License plate frame that says "mom's taxi", "baby on board" sticker in rear window, baby seat in back, one of those flowery lei's hanging from the rear view and some girly seat covers(I'm single, no kids! );...). I try to keep my gas door open most of the time too. Anything that will add to the sleeper effect. I get so many unsuspecting people to race me. it's a blast. I say go for the galant and happy boosting!

The ECU man. The capacitors tend to leak. If the gvr4 shuts off mysteriously only to start back up an hour later it might just be that. Definitely check out the www.galantvr4.org site and browse under the cars for sale folder. Chances are that same gvr4 was already owned by a previous member to the site and can tell u about the car.
