I did something EXTREMELY stupid tonigiht.

I was WOT in 3rd at about 90 and tried to shift into 4th. Unforunately, I slammed the car into second instead and let go of the clutch. Yeah, the car didn't like that too much. Rev Limiter and everything. It was only in gear for like half a second then I put it in 5th and slowed down to like 60. The car made an AWFUL AWFUL scraping sound as if I was bottoming out for a few seconds, then it went away, then it came back. Sounds exactly like you're scraping the front bumper.

I got off the highway and turned the car off immediately. I let it cool for about 15 minutes. I started it again and the car felt fine. The clutch stunk up for a few minutes, so I know I burned SOME of it. Now the clutch feels REALLY soft, it's like pushing in a damn pillow, but it engages at the exact same place and the clutch still feels normal. I have no clue about this

It's not leaking any fluid, nothing smells different, the car still hits boost fine, everything works fine. It shifts through all the gears, for some reason even smoother than before???

How bad did I hurt my car tonight guys?

PLEASE don't call me a dumbass for the shift, I've been driving stick forever and I just made a mistake. I have no idea how it happened, I know 3rd to 4th is straight down, i know it's probably the simplest shift to make. I have no idea why I did that, I had a brainfart or something.

Any input as to the extent of damage is appreciated. I feel like such a dumbass..... :thumbdown

i would think any major damage from a over rev like that would show up instantly.
you prob didnt do anything.

I did that in my first car a 1979 Datsun 210 wagon, the clutch litterly exploded. the largest peices were the springs, the rest of it was dust.

Nah, you were probubly overtaken by nervousness. A car is made to perform, if the trany didnt fall out of the motor didnt throw a rod thru your block and there was no smoke comming from undr your hood..... its fine. We all do stupid shit like that, it happens. You might have worn your clutch just a little, but its not a big deal.

And also, if you DO go get it looked at, what exactly are you going to have them 'look at'? Dont worry about it, the car is fine. :thumb:

I agree, if you get it checked out you'll probably end up paying for something that you don't even need anyways..

Just kidding. You probably just heat glazed the clutch surface or the flywheel a little. It might slip a little more until your next clutch job - nothing major.

My friend did the same thing as you did...

His crank pulley broke right in half, Got lodged in with the timing belt frayed that bent 10 of his valves, And some more stuff happened.. I was right behind him. The car did not smoke or anything, It just sounded like you were scraping your bumper like you said, But that was his timing belt slapping the cover. :(

dont feel bad i let my freind drive my car and he did the same damn thing...i was scared shitless but hey then he did it in his own car and it blew the tranny LOL.....karma's a bi***. and hey i agree with dave id say the damage would be almost instant and that state of RPM. and the reason people typically do that is because they rest their hand on the side of it..like normal drivers...nothing wrong with that but you have a tendancy to pull TOWARD yourself..if i was next to you id show you how i shift when i race or w/e but u dont really need that u just gota make sure u arent puling toward yourself....id say you lucked out with either minor damage or no damage.

the clutch feels normal again. The car feels fine. Only thing I've noticed is that the stock gauge says there is NO oil pressure, it's resting at the bottom no matter what the engine is doing. This might have been there before my mistake though, who knows? Any ideas?

The signal wire has a tendancy to vibrate off, look under the car at the oil filter housing and see if any wires are hanging there.

check your A/c belts, it probably snapped and took out your oil pressure sensor.

Yea dude, definitely have it checked out if you can't do it yourself. All kinds of weird stuff happens when you overrev. Wound my stock block to 10k and shook the flywheel and tbelt tensioner loose. Put a new ACT StreetLite flywheel on w/Supra ARP bolts and rehung the tbelt and I was all good. A buddy of mine broke a crank like this too. If you haven't spun a rod then it doesn't mean you're in the clear. Good luck

Yeah me and my friend were racing on the freeway and he did the same thing. The transmission was the only thing hurt. After that he couldn't shift into 1st or 2nd but everything else was fine.

when i did that in my ex's car (i hate her shifter) it snapped all the accessory belts, first thought was i floated valves because it made a loud banging sound. fixed all the belts and drove it 3 days later from pa to va beach, checked the compression and was still the same as before. just check and make sure u didn't float a valve

my wife did basically the same thing...ripped the lining off the plate on the flywheel side and about half the lining on the pp side...could tell right off the bat that something was wrong. if nothing is dramatic you are probably ok...but for piece of mind i would have to check it out to be sure.

jim :dsm:

my friend with an evo8 did that to me after I drove his car all nice.... a week and a half later I got rod knock after a race..... can't guarantee they were related but....
