Probably gonna get killed for this but I was coming home from work the other day and a 1g talon got next to me and it sounded so badass....and he had a stock exhaust. It had that offbeat camed up kind of sound. Only comparason I can think of is like a WRX  . It wasnt an exhaust leak either as this isn't the first time I have noticed this. Is it cams that give it that offsetting sound or the way the exhaust is run differently or what. Because I have heard 2gs with cams that didnt sound half as good. You 1g guys got it made
Im so gettin flamed for sayin that :p

i really wanted to be a dick when i heard the title :| but you are so aware of it that i cant haha ;). When i put the 90 motor i built into my car my initial reaction was whooo this thing sounds deep. I wouldnt compare it to the WRX cause those things can sound so throaty its crazy. But i guess i would possibly account it to the cams, and less velocity of the intake manifold from those huge ports. Other then that i dont know. I also noticed a deeper note out of my car when i took off all my emmisions lines and blocked of the TB ports

i have a 2g and a 1g. and they sound kinda different. IMO. and they both have the same mods. only diff is one is AWD.

I have not heard a 2g lately, but my 1g does sound deep and throaty with the stock exhaust.

It is not even close to the sound of my wrx though ;)

So maybe Im not loosin my marbles :p
BTW....wat exactly do you mean by exhaust housing?

A turbo makes all the difference in the exhaust tone... Every car will sound a little diff because they dont all use the same muffler etc....

But good thing this is in engine performance. I bet people will gain alot knowing that 1g's sound awesome and you sort of compare it to a WRX. I might try this to see if i gain some performance

You guys are right. Every 2G I've driven sounded smooth and quiet. Every 1G I've been in sounded deep and slightly throaty. My 1G Tsi sounded badass with the stock exhaust. Under mild acceleration it would growl like uuuuuurrrrgh. I've always wondered what causes the big sound difference.

A 1g's exhaust is damn near straight, with a couple bends in it, and with a nice high flowing muffler, it'll sound meaner than say a FWD that has all those crazy bends that do muffle the sound of the exhaust as the gases change direction. I'm also thinking that the cat's in the early cars aren't as advanced as in the newer generation, which could emit a different sound. anyways, FWD to AWD is the only way i can see you guys hearing a difference. AWD to AWD 1st to 2nd gens, there really isn't much difference in how the exhaust is made, except the side it exits.

I do have a 1g and now its been heavily moded, but once upon a time when it was basically stock it still sounded deep and throaty compared to all of my friends 2g's. I now have hks cams and the sound is still deep so more than likely its not the cams. The 1g head does flow differntly and that could be why.

It almost has a deep euro growl to it. Even if there is no explicable reason you cannot deny what is.

They're a decade and more old. Their exhausts are either rotted-out, or replaced.

I'm gonna have to go ahead and uhhh disagree with you there my 1g TSi AWD had its original exhaust it wasn't not rotted anywhere and it sounded mean.
(For stock  )

It's funny you bring this up. I'm using a 6 bolt and a few weeks ago a friend of mine made a comment how my car has a pretty deep sound, even tho my exhaust is stock. I thought all DSM's were pretty deep sounding due to the turbo

I notice different sounds between different DSM's, but the sound quality or volume is never different enough to make me think its something more then a muffler, cat vs test pipe or possibly cams. To me all the WRX's with exhaust sound like weed whackers and nothing like DSM's period.

my exhaust got noticably deeper and louder when I did the 6 bolt swap in it..

first gens have a bigger throttle body, bigger intake mani, and their head flows more then a 2g head. Plus, their stock 14b turbo is much bigger then a t25 so essentially they are moving more air then a 2nd gen would. i'm sure they would sound different considering that. Not by much, but different.

Obviously you haven't heard many. My wrx sounds like a weed wacker IN NO WAY.

i would have to disagree with the wrx statement I wish my tsi sounded as mean as a wrx with a full exhaust.

It's the turbo. I had exhaust on my car with the T25 and it was quiet and a little wussy sounding. After I switched to the 16g it was a lot deeper and more throaty. The bigger the exhaust housing on the turbo the less it acts as a muffler. My buddy's 99 with a 3052 is just about the loudest DSM I've heard with a full exhaust and it rumbles so deep it hurts your chest.

Yea I guess I didnt really consider the turbo....14b as to the viper killin t25  bigger ports and such. Well when I do finally get around to a 6 bolt swap ill have this to look forward to BTW...whoever said WRXs sound like a weed wacker needs to take a ride in a honda....sorry man but boxer motors sound mean.
