I bought a pretty well stripped 97 gsx 5spd to rebuild. After getting very comitted to the project ($$$), we discovered the jack a$$es cut the wiring harness in at least 4 places. Both the engine harness and the under dash harness are fubared

My question is can i use a wiring harness for engine and/or dash from anything other that a 97 AWD 5spd? I have not been able to find one anywhere! Will a 95-96 or 98-99 work? And if so, what would I have to change if anything.

This car has gotten a complete 6-bolt swap (Engine and head), And i am honestly a little over my head trying to keep track of everything. With all the aftermarket crap i have bought, i really don't want to worry about the electrical in the car.

Please help if you have any input!

Depends on what your final goal is. I would hard wire an AEM into it and be done. Stock harnesses have a mess of extra wiring that is ...usually unnecessary.

What is involved for the AEM system? I have already bought all the stuff to do a MAFT setup and i am concerned that it wouldn't work well with the AEM.

How much of the system does the AEM control. does it come with all injector plugs, temp plugs, etc...?

I never planned on doing a stand alone, so i am a little nieve about their capabilities

Standalones completely replace the stock ECU so you must tune every parameter (timing, fuel, knock timing pulling, etc.). The AEM is usually a plug-and-play setup, which means it just plugs into the factory harness so you would need to replace or repair the harness you have already. I know a 97-99 harness will work in your car, I'm not sure if the 95 and 96s had different harnesses because I know there were a few differences.

Well, the AEM would be a waste to me then because i have already done all the stuff to run a MAFT.

Are you positive that a wiring harness from a 98 or 99 will work? The dealership told me there were differences, but i guess a difference to them could be really minor. I just want to make sure that i get one that will work before i spend all the $$$ on one.

I'm not 100% sure so wait for another member, but I am fairly certain there is no difference.

97-99 Electrical Diagrams are all the same in the dsm shop manual.

They all have the same Cam and Crank Angle sensors in the same places, same motor. 97-99 harness should work.

What about the other items served by the wiring harness. I am going to have to replace both harness (engine and dash). Do these have identical pin locations for EVERYTHING? I really would like to have 100% of the car functions working properly. Im not trying to be anal, but im honestly tired of screwing with wiring. My 3 month project has been going for over 8 now, and it sucks making a payment on somthing i cant drive!!!
