hey guys...has anyone done an engine swap from an M3 to a Z3 1.8? my friends got one and were wondering weather or not we could do it
has anyone heard of it being done?

i think the bmw "m" has one in it, the chassis looks the same so i guess it is possible/

the m has 300hp and looks just like a z3 from what i can see.

they made an M roadsterand coupe with engine out puts ranging from like 240 to 320 hp, but i doubt it will be a fun swap because 1. its a BMW and 2. 1.8L = 4cyl and M3motor = 6cyl. If you could make it work that would be the pwn!

Just go buy a 2001+ M-Roadster. Its exactly what youre talking about. M3 engine in a z3 chassis. 315hp with stiff suspension. My Dad has one and it hauls ass all over the place. Theyre not expensive anymore either.

The M engine is a direct dropin to a Z.

BMW engiens are good for their swapability (As good as modern cars can be) I've heard of The M5 V8 being swapped into that chassis.

e39 m5 motor in a e46 m3 - its been done
e39 m5 motor in a e46 3-series - its been done, there footage of it too if you lok on kazaa or something

This months' SCC has an article about a guy who dropped the M3 motor into his E46 wagon. It's a pretty sweet setup, and he says he's working with the shop who did that swap to build up a M5 wagon.

BMW swaps are easy..hell,even the wiring harnesses and ECUs are easily swapped..they have one or two big multi master connectors..easy compared to other cars...


as for the 1.8 /M roadster swap...

sell the 1.8, get a M roadster.. they are abbundant,not hard to find,the insurance on Z3s are incredibly low(here at least) and with the Z 4 on the market..Z 3s are filling the dealer lots...

yeah my friend really doesnt want to sell his car..because he can get an M engine for like 3-4 grand, so it would be cheaper to drop that in then get a whole new BMW..thanks for your help guys

is the M coupe the same motor as the M3 or just the same power output?

What about an early 90s 750IL engine (5L V12) into a 540i? You can get an 89-94 750IL fairly cheap these days and that engine is nuts.
