OK, this is my third 92 AWD and my first auto. Here is my problem. I was tightening the shifter down yesterday on my new beater and when I put it into lower gears (2,1) with the key all the way to on position, but not started, it was making a loud clicking sound (sounded like a mini machine gun). It sounded like it was coming from the black plastic round cover located on the front side of the transmission (front of car). If you place the car in reverse it clicks for a second, drive it clicks for a second, then goes away for a second and then returns constantly. For 1 and 2 it just clicks constantly.
Car also did it while running? What is going on here. I also heard a loud clicking briefly from the rear of the engine compartment when turning the car on, but have heard this before on auto cars. It went away after a second.

Flush the fluid, and drop the pan. Trying to diagnose something like that is impossible over the internet.

Not if someone has experienced it before. The car is off and therefore, what would flushing the fluid and dropping the pan do? It is an electrical problem, so your recomendations are useless? I hate when people give help that is no help!

Anyone have any useful information?

Edit: Spelling

Wow, you ask for help, then flame me for giving the basic "Where to start".....dropping your pan is to make sure there aren't any chunks floating around.
If you know so much, as far as it being electrical, then you wouldn't need to be told to pull codes from the TCU.....but you already knew that ;)

As 98TalonTsi said, drop the pan and see if there is anything funny going on in there.. There are 2 electical solenoids in there and if they are no properly grounded, who knows what can happen... Start with what is easiest for you to diagnose and work from there...

Head over to http://www.plymouthlaser.com/tcucodes.htm and that will give you a quick VFAQ on how to extract codes from the TCU.

Regardless if information is relevant to you or not, the effort to help you out is there so it would be appreciative by just saying thanks instead of "I hate when people give help that is no help!"

I appreciate help, and you read my post and gave a relevant answer. His response was of no help at all. When your lifters tick, do you drop the pan and check the oil? Most people would be familiar with DSM's know what you are descibing and let you know what needs attention. This is all I was looking for.

I understand basic mechanics, I am on my third car and my last one laid down 480whp, so I know some "basics". His answer was equal to the famous "use the search"....it simply means he had no idea what was going on :).

Sorry for the rant, but I do hate answers that are no help. Thanks for pointing out the grounding on the solenoids and the link to the auto trans site. I will do some reading there to get a better idea of what might be going on in there.

Actually that would have been a great response, to bad you didn't think of that on your first post :p

Chunks floating around would cause the solenoids to click, while the car was off?

You did also say the car did it while running... .....and I've been through too much to not, not know what's going on.
Who knows what causes what, but when you don't have a clue, you start with the basics like you said, regardless of anything else. Doesn't hurt to drop the pan or change the fluid anyway, you'd actually be surprised how many problems you could have from incorrect fluid, fluid condiition, and fluid level.
Did this start happening just after you tightened the shifter? Does it sound more like when the ECU is just plugged in and the key turned on the 'ON' position? Did you attempt to pull codes?

Well to be honest with you, I never had the shifter in the lower gears with the motor not running but the key all the way on. I had to do this to get the bolts tight and this is when I heard it. It was loud enough, that my neighbor came out of his garage to see what the noise was! I was curious if it did it when the car is running, so we looked at that and it did. It is not as loud, but it's still there. You can't hear it from inside when the car is running.

I'll pull codes right before I pull the motor. I am going to send the head off next week and in the meantime I am going to pull the tranny, re-ring the block, put new bearings and gaskets in. ( The rear main is leaking) I am also going to the shift kit and end clutch replacement. I'll check the codes before I do any of this.

Who knows, but I appreciate the help, sorry for the rant earlier.
