well its a little late to change now that i have it, 850 is an intresting number seems high but like u said a piece of pipe can flow too. way i saw it when i bought it was plenty of people have fast times on factory sidemounts, and the starion was in my price range of under 100
LOL just wondering about some numbers on it thanks guys, o and glad to see you got a FMIC mark that 50trim had to be heatin that side mount right up, i've been looking at the johnny race core thread and i think that might be my next step if i can ever get the money for a 16g. thanks
Ryan

As of right now my 96 talon is sitting in my garage without an intercooler of any type. I can get a stocker for 50 bucks, or get a Starion for about 30. With some modification this thing will be able to bolt up to my stock pipes, right? I am running hard pipes as well.

I plan on running a 14b, and 550's too. I have all the other supporting mods except a datalogger (for the safc). Will this FMIC be able to support a 14b with 550's? I am no track guy, but enjoy messing around town and occasionally on the track. What mods can I do to make the starion flow better? Larger inlets and outlets? Which shops can fab those up for me?

The Starion FMIC isnt very popular because its just a notch up from our SMIC's. A 14B isnt to much to handle so you might be okay but make sure you think about it because if you upgrade in the future the Starion FMIC might not be adequate.

I've heard that the starion has a lot of pressure drop. My advice is to shop around for a supra sidemount....way bigger than the 2g stocker and will give you the sleeper look. You can find one for about 150, only mod is flipping the endtanks, which most already have done. vfaq has a great walkthrough on it. If you're not planning to go big later on than that setup will be fine.....but if you think you want more power in the future, throw down the extra 40 bucks and get 660's. Trust me, you won't regret it :thumb:

Well I myself have a Starion front mount and it was fine for a while but now I'm going bigger. It's a curse man....we all have it. You'll want to go bigger, better, faster. Remember man you mod cheap you mod twice. As far as efficiency goes its great, it cools down the charge quite a bit. But, there is a significant pressure drop so..
There are all sorts of intercoolers on Ebay that look pretty damn nice. Try the ebay store who's username is boostcoolers. They look great....thats what I'm planning on gettting. :thumb:

:talon:

I've owned Starions. I don't believe presure drop is an issue though i cold be wrong. i heard they flow 850 CFM andcooling would be the problem, just not that efficient. Also 2 1/8th inlet/outlets. The work involved would not be worth the results. there is a guy, kellydahman who sells larger hardpipes for this FMIC on www.starquestclub.com. you would have to ut some holes in the radiator supprt for their fitment. You can fnd used FMIC's for a good price if you look. There is a guy selling an EVO VIII FMIC with custom ss piping for a 1G on NABR. i now you have a 2G but it is just an example of good deals tat are common. mark

I modified my starion fmic with 2" 1/2 hard pipe right out of the endtanks. I don't know how it flows and back pressure it creates. But I know after 25+ psi passes down the track in 90* weather the outlet stays cool for me.
I've had good luck with it running a 117.49 mph best trap with my 18g. Would I run as fast with a modified stock side mount ? Possibly, but I know that I would pick up some mph up with a "real" race fmic.

Here Are pics of my Old setup.... I Had the 88 starion core which is more effecient or so im told.... Then i had my buddy weld on some 2.25" T60601 aluminum pipe. Then I went to RRE and bought the 2nd gen PiPE KIT for 150 bux..... My 16g was never happier.. I threw in some race gas and ran a 12.9 at 19 psi with that intercooler and the Outlet never once got hot.... inlet stayed warm @ 19psi... So the entire FMIC cost me 150 bux just for RRE mandrel bent piping....http://www.roadraceengineering.com/parts/icpics/2g-rreic-pipeandhose.jpg

This old setup sure saved me money and was quick but i now have a new bumper and new turbo and HUGE FMIC and all new toys. But for the time when money was scarce that intercooler setup worked great... :D

So it looks like your options are totally open. Listen to advice, you don't want to get something you'll grow out of. In a perfect world you should save until you can get a great fmic kit. I have JR's and it is awesome!!! (search JR fmic for more info)
Conclusion, the starion and supra sidemount are both good mild upgrades to the stocker. If you go bigger i'd look into a nice frontmount kit, colder is better :thumb:

I already make a search,. and found a thread talk about the starion cfm, they don't really know how much can flow this intercooler.

http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=148054&highlight=starion+intercooler+cfm*

Me my starion have a 2.5 inches out and a 2 inches in,. for the piping. I ran a 13.18 @ 108.33 mph,. with little slick 22x8x15 ,. with that intercooler and my 14b @ 18psi with pump gas (94 octan)., 10 of knock in my datalogger.

With my 16g evo3 (I know that the starion suppose to suck,. and I need a new I.C but it will came later.) if the starion can old the 550cfm and more from this turbo??

thx.

I have owned Starins. I have heard they flow 850 CFM but there is the question of efficency. You will be OK for a while as many with Starions run 20G turbo's. If you are not going bigger than the EVO www.dejontool.com makes a nice street FMIC. Mark

whats up guys,
I currently have a supra sidemount intercooler and I have a chance to get a starion intercooler for cheap. Do you guys think it would be worth it to change to the starion intercooler or should I just stick with the Supra IC. I have heard that the starion intercoolers aern't very good but I want to make sure. Any help is greatly appreciated. thanx

what you will need for a starion ic,... if it has the piping connected that goes along the back so that both in and out are on the same side, you need to remove that, and you need the pipes to get from where the stock upper piping ends to the out side, and piping to go from the in, around the radiator to the turbo, if hes selling all the piping and everything you will need, it will be a good deal for about 200 or less...

Do you think it would be as efficient as the supra intercooler.

Good idea Defiant, I just need to test some of my friends intercoolers too to see what is the most efficient and what flows the best.

is it me or does that site not have the starion intercooler,.. also, that talon intercooler looks nothing like mine, and that supra intercooler looks nothing like the ones ive seen (but there are different generations of supras so that might still be a supra intercooler)

The site's creator was killed in 2002. The method of creating an intercooler flow tester remains viable.

A buddy of mine has given me a starion fmic that he has no use for any longer. I was wondering if anyone has used one of these before? I would love saving the couple hundred bucks by using this intercooler for now if at all possible. I've attached a pic of a similar one that's on ebay at the moment.

you will have to mount it upside down with the inlet and out facing the floor. than have pipes that do 90 deg bend. it will work better than smic. just need to figure out the piping or rubber tubing. i want one my self. but i think i'll just wait a bit longer and get a nice shinny ebay fmic.LOL

Not quite sure yet, I'm still messin around with it. It's kinda hard to tell how low it is when the car is jacked up and bumper is off. Plus I've got these cords and what not in the front since my car is winterized. I'm sure I'll take some pics sometime today while I'm workin on it. Does anyone have pics of one mounted on their car already?
