if you need a rebuilt tranny go with dogbox, brian and alex are great, their trannies are as good as shep and tre and are cheaper too.

not doubting TRE they are a great bunch of guys and build a helluva tranny, but when i had my tranny built by shepherd i asked him about the GVR-4 first gear cause i wanted it. HE told me he would not warranty it because they are weak and break easily

Same here. I asked the same thing and he said it wasnt strong enough. He doesnt run it in his car either. :talon:

From what I get from the article I think you have to let off the gas to shift but you don't have to use the clutch. I don't think that the first gear is that tall, ya 60 in first gear but that is at 9000 rpm so I think that it might be somewhat streetable if you have a good clutch. Heck I know that it would be worth it I have seen some vids of cars with dogboxes(crunchboxes hehehe) and they sound wickedsick :thumb: !
[edit]
You can shift it at 9000+ rpm because it will go into gear but you can't baby the shifting.

I am still waiting on some more info. I called SHep last week and he had not used any of them yet, though he is one of thier reccomended installers.

It's been long since the introduction, still no feedback from any actual users. Are these actually rolling around or did magnus not shipout the pre-orders made, if any.

I have heard of 2 people on the dsmlink forums who are installing the dogboxes. These are the only people I have heard that are (eventually) using dogboxes in there dsms.

i installed a dox box in my 1g for a few days........and it was very tuff to get use to shifting without the clutch engaged, and shifting like a ninja as well. you do really have to shift as hard and fast as you can even if your shifting to first at a stop light. driving on the street got annoying real fast. i will take my shep built trans anyday over the dogbox. at the track the car ran good. shifting at 9k without the clutch is scarry because the car jumps like you just got rearended. i still like the welded diff trans i got. anyone want to make an offer on my dogbox?

You have the Magnus version? How long was it in? Shoot me a PM with what you are wanting to get out of it.

the whine is not that bad. its tuff to hear over the 3" exhaust. i have pruvens dogbox from there 9.4 orange car. which is composed of all the same parts the magnus has, imported from the same people marco gets his from.

you think running a magnet on the drain plug might help w/ changing the tranny fluid every 1500??? every 1500 is nothing for a drag car but a streetable car.......thats 2 as much as the engine oil. you would think a magnet would catch all the metal shavings and help prolong the life of the tranny>? i do thins on all my differentials and everytime i change the diff fluid it catches some metal i know this has to help save the bearings. (yea i know dsm diffs come w/ a magnet) still seems like something worth tryin if your gonna street this tranny,
Ryan

If I had a $5000 transmission, I wouldn't care too much about changing the oil every 1500 miles :)

I would'nt consider buying this until i was making enough power to need it. Thats why theres not many people using them. Now if your making that much power this would be a huge benefit. I know i have trouble getting my BMtrans to shift at 7500 let alone at 9000 and im only making a little over 300whp i think. If that was 500whp id be pulling the trans after every day at the track. :thumbdown

if you cant get you tranny to shift at 7500 then there is something wrong with your tarnny. my shep trans shifts like butter at 9k. and most people that have the moeny for a dogbox get it. i dont think it has anything to do with hp. i have 500 whp and i would take the shep trans over the dog anyday. the dog is just to harsh for me.

if u had to change the tranny oil every couple weeks it would get lame real quick, but i suppose if i dropped 5k on a tranny i would change it that often if thats what was required, idk i was just wondering if they had tried it on any of the ones they were testing.

OK allot of you kids need to actually read the information on this transmission, then if you still do not understand actually research what a dog box is.

If any one is worried about the PRICE or the NOISE then you need to go to the hang out because this thing is not for you. This transmission is for the guys who are blowing them every couple months. when you get to that point this piece of equipment becomes well worth it.

the only thing that scares me about this thing is not having to rev match in a synchro-less trans. gives me the creeps.

Some people really think they know it all!! Most people that are asking question about this NEW TRANNY just want to know some things about it from someone who really has one thats all. You learn from asking questions, you can read whatever you want but asking someone who has one installed in there car.....there's nothin wrong with that!
The noise well I've heard indy cars and I thought that those gears were LOUD a little whine is nothing, but a super high pitch whine may be a much for street strip car. Anyone can blow a tranny every couple months!! This is a forum information is shared :dsm: Lee

stupid question for someone:

if you double clutch can you shift the tranny like a pansy...or is there no way around shifting it fast and hard all the time?

I don't think you can shift that tranny like a pansy......no sincros! Geuss there are not many poeple trying those dogbox trannys, or at least they'er not on this forum. Geuss the only way to get input on one is to buy it! ;)

Well i guess you all have been looking for someone who actually has a Magnus DogBox.

I am one of the originals, ive had the box for awhile now. The shiftings is wonderful, isnt as harsh as some of you have tried to make it out to be. Initally it sounded like i left my tranny behind after every shift. But you just shift quickly. Downshift is the same way, i have found a wonderful method to downshift with a cleaner smoother shift then a syncroshift tranny. Double clutch when downshifting, it works great and everytime its like butter. The whine is not bad at all, in a week you will honestly forget its there. But all your friends will know when you pull up, cause it does have a little whine. But shifting is really solid, the gear ratios are great for the fully built 2.4L and im sure it would be fine with the torque of a 2.0L. The gear ratios have been revised. There is no longer a 5th dog. If you would like the 5th dog they will throw it in there for you but your tranny will grind while going into reverse. The top speed is 189MPH(need to check on this number now possibly wrong, just a heads up) now in 4th gear. 1st gear is around 60MPH.

Hope this helps a little, save the hastle let magnus put the thing together for you.

PS my girlfriend drives the car all the time she loves the dogbox too. She says people look at her funny when shes driving. If you shift just right it doesnt make a noise. That comes from her mouth not mine. FUnny

thanks,
Steven Eliuk

190Mph 4th? What rpm is that at? That would put a typical 2.3 or 2.4 car that is running 130-150Mph in the 1/4 down at 5500Rpm going through the traps? I'm not sure that would be a positive if you have a gib turbo not building boost until 5000Rpm.

Hi steve

Are you sure about these Ratios???

We are going to put one if these sets in my Drag-Evo and last time I spoke to marco a week ago he said that he had actually shortened the ratios.

189mph in 4th is VERY hard to believe, I think it should do around 165-170 in 4th which is perfect for mid 8sec cars.

has anyone any info on if Shepracing has tested these gearsets??

Kami

Honestly this was about 6 months ago when me and marco talked. I thought it was around 189MPH. But he changed stuff around so much im not sure any more. All i can say is you cant shift in to 4th while city driving.

But no matter what 4 gear should be fine for 100% of you out there. Track wise i mean.

To be honest iv only shifted into 4th once, yeah once.
Thats was just to test it out.

wow basicly turns your 5 spd into a 3 speed with the optional 4th when doing your 8 sec. 1/4 miles runs.. I'm really wanting to get a dog box.. Going to have to go with a $2K TRE until I can get that kind of scratch... By that time I hope to be putting down 550ish WHP and actually need one of these bad boys... Hopefully I don't blow up my TRE unit...
