the liliput seems to be the screen of choice for most carpcs and understandably so. However, is anyone aware of any other small touch screens capable of 800x600...preferably in the 7-9 inch range?

Xenarc 700TS or 700TSV

more expensive... but arguably better quality

I've had the idea for quite some time of using a modified xbox, with a 200 gi hard drive, as the basis of a carpc instead of an actual pc. This way you would have XBOX and media playing features all in one. And I'm not sure on the boot speed of a carpc, but I was thinking an xbxo might boot faster also.

I was wonderiing if anyone had attempted this as of yet?

Very good.

You are planning on upgrading to a BIG HD I hope also. I don't mean big like 1 tetrabyte big, just like a 120 gig

speaking of 1tb of storage, i saw an article on slashdot a couple days ago. cd or dvd sized discs. they'll be here between 2010 and 2015! whole story here

yes i kno some people have used both xbox and ps2's instead of pc's, and they like them

as for boot up time, i use the hibernate feature of winxp and i have a bootup time (from hibernate) of close to 10s

For a more in depth article on the new DVD stoarage devices.

They make a couple start up applications to disable anything you might not be using. The only downside of using larger amounts of memory is the fact that it'll take longer to come back from hibernate.

another nice tool is: nLite...

it makes another compilation of w/e version windows you have on CD and you can choose sertain features to get rid of, saving memory

First of all, if you are using a computer to play MP3's, you don't need 512 MB memory. That's just a waste being that the price of memory just jumped back up not to long ago.

Secondly, depending on what music and videos you are playing, your CPU does matter quite a bit. How else do you think your computer decodes video files unless you have an mpeg decoder card?

for standard mp3/wma and mpeg-4/divx decoding, a real high end processor isn't nessesary. I think a intel 2.0ghz or higher would be just great (or AMD 2200 or higher). 512M or 1G of memory isn't nessesary to play mp3's.. .. he could run a 200mhz p2 with 64 megs of ram and play mp3's just fine. More memory is for video (you need room to put all the data calculations the processor is doing for video/music decoding) and also to allow for faster boot up times. Pumping winXP with a gig of ram will keep him from waiting too long for the thing to boot up.

of course, if you get a newer system - stick with the new pentium4's with a meg of cache.. (if you're a pentium guy, anyway).

I Now have my screen, DVD-ROM, and new HU mounted... the HU and dvd-rom still have some work to do with it's housing and fittings, but the screen is finished

 ...quick question...why remold your entire dash when you could have this for 400 bucks (including dvd player underneath seat)..this way the screen stays hidden when not in use

if u put the screen there then what was all the fiberglass on the dash for?

because this is not only for playing dvds... it is for many other things such as navigation and other things

yea but im talkin bout the screen...how are u gonna keep it hidden from sight so it doesnt get stolen...btw mine could be used for a car pc or gps too..same thing

well im not planning on hiding it at all, if they are going to steal it, then they'll steal it

and does your screen have VGA input?? cause that is the main reason i bought this screen, it give much better quality for pc's

and the fiberglassing of the dash, i abandonned that project, it just put the screen way too close to the airbag

No it can't.

You need VGA inputs on that monitor, not RCA's. Some could steal your in dash unit just as easy as his externally mounted unit. In most cases if they are gonna break into your car, they will take your stereo as well as your LCD, not just one.

its called a vca-rca adapter

....and no its not gonna be just as easy to steal mine...mine has 4 screws holding it in...i seriously wanna see someone take this thing out...(u cant rip it out, theres nothing to hold on to...and even if u rip the entire dash back with a giant crow bar its still gonna take u 10 minutes to get these screws out ...my viper alarm will have sounded after the first second and paged me...w/ in 30 seconds i will have a baseball bat to the fools cranium)...with his, u can just rip the damn thing off the dash...and its more visible....just begging and saying OMG i have more expensive shit in here...mine is barely noticeble w/ the radio faceplate gone....im not gonna argue ne more but just stating facts..

djXternal: i applaud you on your custom job w/ the carputer...i like what you did w/ the computer itself but the dvd drive in the din slot is just a little sloppy..dont get me wrong no offense it still all looks great and is very practical but maybe u could put the dvd drive under the seat and fill that slot w/ a change holder or somthin...just an idea..but other than that :thumb:

yea im gonna use plexiglass to make a space filler around the dvd drive... this is part of the cosmetic work i need to do... and ill mount the power button, power light, and 2 usb ports next to the dvd drive
