Hello everyone, I have a noise sorta like a smog pump with a hose off or something. It's coming from between the timming belt cover and the block from what I can tell right now. It dosen't do it all the time just when it wants to:confused: When it does do it at idal you can barely hear it and it revs with the rpms up to four grand and stops.I think it might be coming from maybe the head or valve cover i don't know and there is no lose in power when it's doing it. thanks for any help

Sounds to me like a tensioner is bad.
Is it a Urrrrrrrrr noise until 3-4k rpm?
It is somthing like that noise. I have never heard this noise before on any car. So I don't know what to try and pin point it to. Maybe I will try and run the car with the timming belt cover off. See if I can find anything then. THANKS AGAIN.

My top TB cover made a noise, after a belt change because the yo-yo's thought it would be OK to insatall the top cover without a gasket to save them a few bucks & yes, the noise went away at higher rpms. after you take off the top cover, inspect carefully the edges of the belt for abnormal wear- a sign that things weren't reassembled correctly, prbably the crank pulley notched plate. When you pull off the top cover, a loose timing belt is NOT a sign that the tensioner is not working,(the valve cams are spring loaded & will turn towards each other at the top when the motor is at rest. I don't think there is a way to check the tensioner without removing the bottom cover & unless you did it or watched it being done, there's no way to know if a new tensioner was put on correctly without pulling the lower cover. Having said all that, I hope your noise is coming from the top cover.

ok well i gess the timming belt cover is three parts. I have the very top part off thats how I know it's in between the cover and the block. The guy I bought the car from said he put a timming belt on the car when he put the cams in. I'm going to look at it on friday. I'll get back to this post when I find something and I'll check the covers. thanks:laser:

Make sure that the belts and pulleys aren't rubbing on anything. IIRC, there is a bolt that can work its way out, and actually grind into the timing belt, and wear it away.

Also, BTW. it's "Timing" not "Timming" (timmy != time)

I have the same problem on my 92 NA talon. Actually it's all apart right now due to this noise. It sort of sounds like a knock in the engine and low idle speeds. My noise goes away at 2100 RPM. Today when I pulled the top cover off and turned the car on I was surprised to see the timing belt vibrating up and down very quickly. I turned the car off and checked it and the belt was extremely loose. As of now I'm waiting for a friend to come help me with the crank pulley. It's definately something with the timing belt though. Let me know what you find.

:dsm: im having the same prob with my 95 tsi awd. it makes the urrrrrrrrr noise up to 2100 and then goes away. i was told it was the tensioner so im just waitin on the rest of my parts to come in and mine will be fixed, i hope. i dont know if this has anything to do with it but mine didnt start making this noise till the front of my engine started leaking oil real bad. the oil is leaking on to the timing belt, water pump ect. im also replacing all the seal on that side... expensive fix :talon:

Conguest, as your prob started with the oil leak, there's a good chance that it is the hydraulic fluid from the tensioner that's leaked out & of course it won't hold tension after that. At any rate, yeah, once you pull off the timing covers you don't want to skimp on new parts, replace everything & even consider doing the balance shaft removal. At the autozone website thay say you should even replace the oil pan gasket--which is likely to leak after you support the motor via the oilpan while the motor mount is removed.

It's been a long time since I posted this. I narrowed it down to the idler pulley or the tensioner pulley. I ordered both parts and waiting for them to come in. After I put them on I let you guys know what happen.
