In just about all of the VFAQ's I've looked at regarding clutch changes and/or flywheel removals, they mention buying or making a special tool to hold the flywheel steady while loosening the bolts that hold it to the crank.

I just recently changed trannies (1993 AWD) on my car and noticed that in the crank SNOUT, there is a 1/2" recessed hole that fits a 1/2" drive breaker bar perfectly. Just put the breaker bar in the crank snout hole, wedge it against the ground or sturdy body part, and you can loosen the flywheel bolts with no turning of the crank at all - no special tool is needed.

I'm sure many of you know this, but for those of you that don't, I thought I'd pass it on...

I am bringing this post up from the dead. I used the tip to take the bolts off but my flywheel is sitll stuck to the crank. The motor has been sitting for awhile the the flywheel has rusted some. Is it rusted to the crank? I sprayed some PB blaster on it and tapped it lightly with a hammer but it still wouldnt move. Any tips?

Alright I got the old flywheel off and the new flywheel and clutch on. I bought a new "used" 5spd transmission that I am going to use because I am converting from auto to 5spd. But this transmission did not include the throwout bearing or the steel spring the holds the TOB in place. I have a new Mitsu TOB so thats no big deal, but I do not have the spring. Where could I get the spring? THere arent any Mitsubishi dealers within 3 hrs of me.

I have a rear main seal leak and I am going to replace it. How do you take off the fly wheel? Is there a certain way or do I need a special tool to do it? Please help!

just 6 or 7 bolts, depending on the year. You just need to put a breaker bar on the crank pulley on the other side of the motor to keep the engine from turning. Nothing special required.

if you have an inpact wrench you might be able to pull out the bolts without holding the crank pully.

Yeah an impact gun really helps. I used one of those little electric ones, it took them right off. Make sure to use Loc-tite on all those bolts when you put it back on though!
