There is a small line on the filler neck... when it feels pressure it shuts off the flow of gasoline. If it goes above this it gets into the evap system and maybe that's why you smell gas.

Being able to slide the window back and forth like that tells me the glue that holds the window to the bottom track has let go. Lower the window down, but not all the way. You still want to be able to grab the glass… Lift the glass out of that track and clean it as best you can. Use black...
