Pretty sure my 2004 outback is totalled. Teenager got rear ended and sandwiched. So I likely have about 4 to 5k to spend. Any ideas? Love the 2nd gen subaru bodystyle. Also looking at saabaru 92x. Next to impossible to find. Toyota matrix.
Hatch/wagons seems to be the most practical. Manual a plus(can you believe it?)

Wait a minute... is this the car you picked up after asking us to help you decide on a new daily driver a few months ago? Hope your kid is okay, "sandwiching" sounds serious.

Havent seen many Matrix around these days, but I did 100k miles in a 08 Mazda 3 hatchback as a daily work vehicle when I was doing PDR. Awesome little hatchback that comes in a manual.

Hope your teenager is ok, Paul. I tore up some cars as a teen too. I have been looking at Toyota matrix while helping a friend look for a cheap commuter. I’m sure you know this, but Pontiac Vibe is the same car if you wanted to expand your search parameters some.

Man, I too hope the kiddo is ok. Dang Paul, your luck is like some of the other members on here lately......Best of luck in finding another good vehicle.

Yeah we only had it 2 mos or so

oof
How about a 97 Grand AM SE? They come with their own party favour -- self-spinning air vent diffuser.
No chance. I hate those gm engines. Horrible to work on.

Buy an old Volkswagen Beetle and swap the Subaru drivetrain into it. They're both boxter engines so fitment can be achieved without too much fab. I've seen it done time and time again with KG cars which are a similar chassis to the Beetle. Nobody would expect you to be making 150ish horsepower in a Beetle. And reliably as ever. That's just a fun project though. Probably not practical if looking for a new daily.

I wish my fab skills were better. It's also the h6.

Ah this is the H6 model we're talking about. I though you were referring to the EJ you picked up but perhaps that was longer back than I thought. The days just run together now. I'd probably just get all the money you can out of the car and use it for something else. 4-5k won't get you quite as much as it used to but you should still be able to get something decent with it. If you're loking at Subarus you know my consensus. If you want something different start looking into Hondas. The price of them can be crazy but I still see cool ones for cheap occasionally. Anything with an H series or K series is both fun and reliable. But it'll be a bit harder to retain the AWD aspect if that matters.

My Jetta recently got sandwiched by some girl texting and driving in a Jeep Wrangler, her car got very little damage but drove into my trunk and pushed me into a car in front of me while we were sitting at a red light, my car got totaled and I got a whopping $2500 out of a 2010 Jetta, my sister on the other hand got like $5000 from her 2007 Jetta a few months earlier when it got T-boned, have they given you a pay off for the car yet or are you just guessing at what you will get?

I'm guessing. I paid 3600 not even 2 mos ago based on kbb. I still have my ej 5spd. They're hard to find in good shape.

Prices are straight insane or I’d again recommend a 2015-2018 Ford Edge Sport (or 2014-2019 ford fusion sport. Same engine and trans but 1000lbs lighter. They run 12.6’s with just a damn tune!)

But honestly like I said prices are idiotic. I’d probably try to find some beater Toyota from the 90’s or something that’s reliable but slept on.
