I have seen a lot of messed up heater core nipples from people trying to pry or twist off their old heater core hoses and if you just do this one little thing, damaging a heater core hose nipple will never occur.

Take a razor blade and simply slit the heater hose at the firewall straight down the middle, pulling out and away from the heater core, then just PEEL the hose off of the nipple. No bent or mangled hose connections when you do it that way.
Thank you Josh, at JNZ, for the replacement heater hose kit!

I would be lying if I said I haven’t personally bent and mangled my own heater core nipples about 15 years ago. I did however end up replacing my heater core box from a lever breaking and installed a new core at that time.

Any suggestions for removal if one intends on reusing said hoses if they are in good shape? At the time the car was my daily and didn’t plan accordingly to have new ones already.

Not really. If I am taking off my heater hoses, it is usually time to replace them.
A 90* pick might break the crud loose if you could get it between the nipple and the hose and work your way around.

In the past I've used a small (1/8") flat blade screwdriver between the hose and fitting along with WD40 or soapy water to work the hose loose. Now I'd print up a tool of the right radius to wedge in and twist/pry

First you have to (an absolute must) give yourself a blister twisting as hard as you can with your bare hand.

All jokes aside, I do often have success with a pair of slip joint pliers, using the pipe grip to (gently) pinch the hose and twist back and forth. Once (if) it breaks loose use your (now blistered) hand to twist and pull it off.

There's also some specialty tools available that are designed specifically for this task.
