Can you put a Thermal R&D universal muffler on a 3” custom exhaust pipe and get the original sound of the car specific system that has since been discontinued? Thanks.

Given the lack of replys I guess few, if any have tried. I expect that if you follow the piping/routing and use the same size muffler the result should be close.

The sound of an exhaust is as much from the length, diameter, and bends of the pipes as it is from the muffler

Thermal R&D mufflers for these cars are the exact same as the flow master 3” in/out mufflers(part # 14834). Just recently compared the two in person and they’re the same. As Steve said though a ton of the sound is also piping diameter/bends/etc. But having the same muffler is at least some of the battle won.

Here’s my talon with the magnaflow muffler. I think it sounds a lot like a 2G with thermal exhaust I can find on YouTube.

Thank you for the information regarding the Flow Master. What is drone like in the cabin in different conditions with your Magnaflow? Also, is this the correct muffler that you were talking about?

No not that muffler. This one. https://a.co/d/g5DdRA6

Drone was non-existent. I could honestly barely hear it in the cabin with the windows up. When I romped on it I could hear it but it was nice and deep tone. Here’s a short in cabin clip with the windows cracked.

And this is the inside clip of the car stationary with the windows up. Small revving too. Notice how quiet.

Super quiet. Consider that the car was parked a few feet away from a brick house/corner so sound was reflecting back pretty hard.

Exhaust is a full 3” mandrel bent custom job done by one of the good previous owners. Slip fit with clamps.

Thank you for the information, I'll look into the muffler.
