What does your t3/t4 o2 housing look like?

It looks to me like the Morrison Fab "DSM Small Runner T3 Manifold and Hot Parts" would be the currently available setup most similar to what I have on my car. The stuff on my car was made by Shearer Fab and is no longer available. I wanted to be able to use the stock 1990 oil filter housing which puts the filter sideways and has fittings for hoses to an external air cooled oil cooler. Although as it turns out, the way I use my car, I probably wouldn't even need an oil cooler at all.

I'm not sure how Morrison Fab does this (clearance to the oil filter). They say on their web page "Allows room for oil filter replacement with downpipe in place (shorter 1g style)". I don't know what this means. You'd have to ask them about it, or @Vegas Smith might know - he has this manifold and hot parts kit on his car, unless the design has changed since then. As I remember, he found out there wasn't room for any fans behind the radiator. So he put pusher fans in front of the radiator. On my car (with the Shearer stuff) I have enough room for 2 fans behind the radiator.

Anyway, the manifold, O2 housing and downpipe, wastegate, dump tube, and turbine housing are all packed in together pretty tight, so if you can get a well designed system and use it as designed, it's probably going to be the way to go, keeping in mind fans and oil filter. Yeah it's a bunch of stuff!
 
No way is everyone using Morrison or Shearer. Dsmers are too cheap. The holset guys for instance... are they just making their own?

Here are some pics of my build. It's not the prettiest but it's functional. I'm using a custom downpipe/o2 and a dynaarc manifold which isn't made anymore. Not many people sell downpipe because most of them are custom. It's kinda difficult to clear the alternator and dipstick tune on a 2g. I went with a 90 ofh as well. I believe the 7 bolt guys can use a evo ofh. I could be wrong on that part so please correct me if I'm wrong. I'm using a 7 blade hx35. I wouldn't really change the way I did things but I wish I had better access to people who can make custom stuff.

Nothing "cheap" about a Holset setup other than it is just a journal bearing turbo instead of a ball bearing turbo.
I have 3 Holset HX40 setups. I went out and took pictures just now. @MorrisonFab manifold in the first pics, Drag-N-Fly manifold (made for an Evo, I believe) on the engine on the stand. All T3 and V-band exit. I run .70 and .82 housings. Not much difference between the two.
Here's the pictures. All in 1g cars. The bare unit is my spare, but I do have 3 1g DSMs. :thumb:

I think people think holsets are cheap because they can be had for 500ish. Comparing to new turbos for 1k+. But I agree it's not cheap. It was a major transition for me. Think about it, a dsm flanged fp mani is 200ish. Comparing that to a t3 manifold, is much more. A paid 1500 for my holset, mani, downpipe, and two gates. All used but I think I got a good deal.

Did you notice a difference between the housings? I consider the hotsides to "fine tune" the powerband.

I'm pretty sure morrison fab is the only people making a dsm downpipe?

In your 3rd pic down I see you did have room to fit one fan in behind the radiator. That fan, if it's what I think, is 62.1mm total depth (2.45 inches) and there is a nice selection of SPAL fans that thickness, probably 1 or 2 other brands too.
In the same pic you can see a large clearance between the compressor housing and the water pipe. I remember that in threads of long ago it was common for people to be hammering a dent in the water pipe there, because the stock manifold didn't put the larger turbos out far enough forward to clear it. That's one of the first things a manifold builder has to decide - how to locate the turbo fore-aft so as to make best use of the space available between the radiator and the water pipe - how big of a turbo to accommodate - bigger turbo needs to be farther forward, then at some point you have to give up on having any fans behind the radiator.

Yeah, I run a BIG ass Spal as a puller on the Passenger side and the same size pusher on the drivers side.

That is exactly what I've concluded just in the last week or 2 is probably the best overall fan setup on a modified 1g, if you have room for the passenger side puller. I've had to take a fresh look at my fans because the main puller quit (it was a FAL) (Flex-a-Lite). I'm replacing it with a 12" SPAL puller which fits in with more room around it than the FAL did in the same position.
I have a 9" puller that is only about 2.0 inches thick on the driver side but it just barely fits in front of the waste gate, and that's a small fan. A 12" or even an 11" pusher in front of the radiator there would probably be better, more room, can have a bigger motor (deeper overall fan) and still not run into the FMIC.
 
Well its what I run on both modified cars and works here in KS. Stock works best but no room for them with our setups unless maybe you are a topmount guy. IDK if it would make enough room or not. I imagine it would but have never ran a topmount myself.

Most ppl I see it seems have made their own with a whole bunch of pie cuts. I'm guessing a tube bender capable of doing the above is hard to come by?

@1990TSIAWDTALON where did you get your o2 housing from?
 
Nothing fancy by any means and still have lots to do like route the air filter underneath the fender. Wrap the intake pipe and downpipe. Second fan. Along with tons of other stuff. I wouldn't change anything. Lot of custom work but it's worth it to me. Really just comes down to what you want out of your car and how you want to get it.

Twin scroll Shearer T4 with an adapter and an Hx35. 90 OFH. Gates out the hood. Golf mk3 radiator.

I would not have pegged you as a heavy drinker, but it looks like you got drunk and got into a serious fight with a roll or two of header wrap and metal ties and the header wrap won in a tko! :)
 
Mine is custom, a divided T-4 1.01 ar housing with a divided T-4 tubular top mount header via Redjack Racing, V-band 4" outlet on the turbine housing.

I found this photo the other day of the Morrison setup on someone's build thread.

Oh that's a really good picture. It looks like Morrison Fab has put the turbo in pretty much exactly the same position left to right that mine is in. Seeing that mostly from how the flange side of the compressor housing lines up with the #4 exhaust port. So that doesn't make for any more room around the oil filter than what I have. Plus Morrison has a 3" O2 housing there and mine is only a 2.5" and still Morrison's leaves room to the oil filter.
What I don't know is the oil filter housing. In the Morrison pic there is the water cooled type oil filter housing. Mine has the "air-cooled" type. I don't know which one puts the oil filter farther out towards the passenger side.
 
The water cooled unit puts it closer to the down pipe/passenger side. I use a flat piece of exhaust gasket material from Mr Gasket/Cometic as a heat barrier/shield between the down pipe and the oil filter on mine. You can't see it and it is kinda janky but it keeps the heat off the filter.

If you look at the wrap on the DP, you will see I was fighting a HEAT issue and it won. I was running that car way too lean and boy was it getting red hot under a pass. I even crystalized the turbo blanket. Things will be much richer when it goes back together, ROFL
But I do like to have a cold one in my hand...........

What about Morrison's statement that says "Allows room for oil filter replacement with downpipe in place (shorter 1g style)".
When they say "shorter 1g style" what are they talking about? Shorter 1g style what?

I have a case if them in stock. Parts store brand but I change it way to often because of " unforeseen circumstances".....

Ok I'm glad to have that understood finally!

Yeah the 51381 and 51356 numbers are basically Wix numbers, also used by MicroGard, Carquest, and I think NAPA Gold. Wix has a nice chart for each filter number showing all the dimensions and other specs. And the 51381 is the fat and short one, correct filter for the 1990 air cooled OFH.

This reminds me, when mixing these filters and housings around, it's good to be aware of the difference in gasket diameters. When I first got my car back from English Racing in 2016, they had an Evo filter on it, a K&N HP-1004. That filter has the same smaller diameter gasket on it that the Wix 51356 has. This was on the 1990 air-cooled OFH.
I didn't like it!
It worked, but I decided I don't want to do it that way.
Because the gasket is only partially on the land of the OFH.

Here are screen shots of the Wix spec sheets for the 51381 and the 51356. Notice the gasket diameter difference.

BTW the gasket diameter is why I don't like the K&N HP-1005 and I don't use them anymore on the 1990 OFH. They used a regular round section o-ring with an OD that is slightly less than 2.5 inches. Center to center on the o-ring would be even smaller, I don't have a measurement for it, but it must be barely on the 1990 housing land.
