I've recently started working at a Ford/Hyundai dealer in parts where I've been playing with looking up different things for a 1993-1998 Sonata starting with the timing belt cover. Seeing that my GSX is in need of one I thought I could get a good price on one if it were in stock.. to my surprise it shows 1 remaining at 1 of 9 warehouses across the US. Chances are when showing a quantity of 1 in this instance, it's not actually there or inventory is off. So between that and seeing the recent post about OEM 6bolt timing belt tensioners becoming harder and harder to find it got me thinking.. what else is interchangeable? I imagine most everything is as long as it mounts up or plugs in the same based on the chassis and/or wiring.

I'd like to point out there are 6bolt timing covers on amazon for about $65 plus shipping under the part number 21350-33230 but that part number does not come up for Hyundai as if doesn't exist. The number on the Hyundai comes up with 21350-33130 and does NOT supercede. With timing cover and belt in mind considering the tensioner I checked that as well which DID supercede but is not obsolete. Original number is 24410-33101 SS to 24410-33190 for consideration.

So out of curiosity does anyone else know what parts are interchangeable between the motors (pulleys, gaskets, mounts, hardware, sensors, etc) or does anyone have any questions I can try looking into? And can anyone explain the difference in part numbers between the timing covers?

EDIT: Correcting my estimate of warehouses "maybe 20" confirmed as 9 total, 1 being simply labeled "special" if that even counts.

When I was looking for 6 bolt lower timing cover, I ordered it through hyundai ($65) but it was taking too long. No eta after a week of waiting so I bit the bullet and ordered from expsi.
I'm going to order the 1 it shows left in the US for me but I'm not hopeful it's actually there. I've got another used one on the way in the meantime but I'd be shocked if the one from Hyundai actually shows up.

Timing cover 2135033131 (or 21350-33131, for searchability) for a 6-bolt has been proven: Is this the same timing cover? and 2G - 6 Bolt Timing Cover On The Cheap

I like the initiative of looking into the tensioner arm. :thumb:
Right, I was just saying 33230 as it's listed on Amazon isn't recognized by Hyundai but should physically be the same part even though it isn't an actual part number. And it was the hydraulic tensioner itself I looked into (priced about $150 before tax :oops:) not the arm itself. Though the arm would also be something worth looking into.. I shall report back!

same here, I waited almost a month. I had to call them and was told there were none left.
If it weren't for this cover showing in stock for my price around $40 I wouldn't waste my time but that's worth waiting a few weeks to see what happens. I've already got another used one on the way that should be here for the weekend so I'm kinda just waiting to see what happens.

Let us know about the arm! I think I may have gotten one of the last ones 👀.

You wouldn’t have the part # for the Hyundai 6 bolt pump. I am building a spare 6 bolt.
21310 33142

COPIED FROM ECMLINK FORUMS:
6-Bolt 4G63 =
Mitsubishi = MD175762
Hyundai = 21310-33142
ACL Orbit = OPMB1096

7-Bolt 4G63 =
Mitsubishi = MD327450 (discontinued number)
Mitsubishi 1211A160 (updated number)
Hyundai - not the same
ACL Orbit = OPMB1085

Thanks for these. Are they as good as Mitsubishi? Anyone have experience using one.

I have used a Hyundai oil pump before. It definitely is a different mold/cast as I had them side by side about 10 years ago. I used it on my car, making ~700 crank from 2009-2019. When I pulled it it had very noticeable wear and I had to throw it out.

I also have a Hyundai 6 bolt timing cover. It fits perfectly but again it's a different mold/cast than OEM Mtsu.

Part numbers coming up different again like the timing cover. :hmm: I've tried searching it every which way and it's like 21310-33142 doesn't exist, Hyundai even says it's invalid. I'm also not finding anything called an oil pump related to the 4 cylinder, I can see the filter bracket and the oil pump gears and the front case but nothing lines up to that number. The front case number does supercede but has 3 different numbers based on year however.

Welcome to the frustration! I'm happy (tongue-in-cheek) to hear that Hyundai's inventory control is about as good as Mitsu's. If I see that Mitsu is showing "1" of anything, I forewarn customers "3 out of 10 times they show "1", it ends up that their inventory is off and they don't actually have it".

I am impressed at how Hyundai has "about 20 warehouses across the U.S.". Mitsu was at 4 at one point, but now are at 3 (CA/GA/NJ). Another example of how Mitsu has fallen, and *why*. Hyundai took the ball and ran with it, while Mitsu kinda sat on the sideline after a while.

Many of the older parts will interchange with Mitsu. They may not always be "exact" (2.4 heads vs. Evo heads, Valve Covers (different bolt hole sizing), etc..) but can often be interchanged with some modification/adaptation.

You just have to remember that while Hyundai "weened" from Mitsu back in the day, it was mostly "technology". While they (Hyundai) used the architecture, they didn't use the same manufacturers for parts. Or, when they did, they had them changed to their specifications. These changes can vary from just a cosmetic change, to structural.

I have a connection at a Hyundai dealer as well, but I've shied away from using them and offering up Hyundai parts as a substitution for Mitsu parts (most recently, timing tensioners as you seem to be well aware of). I've heard conflicting results (such as the oil pump review above), and don't want to be the one to push customers in that direction as guinea pigs (so to speak). I carry Gates parts, and do offer ACL oil pumps. I do this as there is enough info out there showing failures of these parts, yet some people are willing to take said risk to save some money. I also typically put that information in our listings of said parts.

It would be great if we were able to establish some parts that are identical. It would open up another avenue of part procurement.

That noted, I've also seen that the older Hyundai parts are also getting disco'd or are in very low supply as well--every bit helps!

I may have exaggerated a bit on the number of warehouses, I haven't actually counted the lines of all the different locations but it's certainly more then 3 LOL that being said this was more of a curiosity post and concerns with the oil pump were definitely a thought when I was looking up the tensioner, like if the part was even designed to work at the same oil pressure or what have you. Things like the arm would certainly be viable as a cheaper alternative but maybe not more crucial parts like the tensioner itself. If we do end up thinking of anything that hasn't already been researched and it does still happen to be available I'd be more then happy to look into it. However my bet is most of the stuff worth looking into already has been and is already discontinued.

Also as an added note the timing cover is now nowhere to be seen at any location in the nation or internationally. So my suspicion was correct in that whatever warehouse showed one actually didn't have it ofcourse.

A couple of things come to mind. The idle switch is very similar, and just simple contact. The Hyundai version is much cheaper, and I've seen some shady people selling the Hyundai one on Ebay, etc., claiming it's a Mitsu unit. Selling it for USE on a Mitsu is fine, and it will most likely work just as well and as long---but *calling* it an OEM Mitsu unit is just shade.

I'd probably look at things like that (sensors and the like) to see if they're cheaper than Mitsu, but a still an "OEM" quality. Tensioner arm is a good call if you can get them and they measure the same as the Mitsu units.

Thermostat housings would be nice to check. Maybe water pipes or oil filter housings.
Thermostat and oil filter housings are discontinued with none showing in stock anywhere. The coolant outlet fitting is also discontinued but one lone dealer in SC shows one in stock but no one else. I am pleasantly surprised to see that the water pipe is not discontinued and shows available at 2 warehouses. I checked the thermostat itself just for fun, it is not discontinued and available in 1 warehouse. Now all it gives me is a simple Y or N for weather or not it's available. It does not show ship date or quantity.

Pics attached to show callouts, original parts listed on the right with their superceded numbers on the bottom.

Would you be referring to either of these two? Ofcourse they don't have anything simply called an idle switch LOL but I did check these two and the throttle body idle switch is the only one of the 2 not discontinued and showing available at 1 warehouse but no dealers. I did also look into the arm yesterday and no luck unfortunately.

Checked some of the only engine sensors I could find, crank and cam sensors, MDP, and some relays. The first picture showing the MDP and the power relay (labeled as the cam sensor on the v6) are available. MDP showing in 2 warehouses and the power relay showing in 1. The crank angle sensor is ofcourse discontinued and nowhere showing.

Note that selecting 1 callout in the drawing will automatically highlight 2 different parts on the picture both with the same part number. This happens here with the crank sensor on one picture and the power relay on the other.
