Looking good. I agree with all your points. The 90 awd is especially troubling to find many parts, most of them obsolete. My list has been long, and at times disheartening, but I persist and prevail. I have a rebuilt 5 speed on the way as I write this.
Definitely do drive it and enjoy it, even if there are still a few flaws to work through. Most of my miles were driving the car back from FLA where I bought it, and got lots of looks, compliments, stories from strangers at the gas pump about their memories of these cars. You don’t get that from a new WRX.

Definately. It’s still a head turner, even with the flaws. I still have DSM friends that I made 20+ yrs ago. Of course now that I’m driving it I’m noticing the issues my trans has in 1st and 2nd gear. It’s disappointing no one is making new synchros or gears to replace the discontinued ones. Cograts on finding a replacement for yours.

Well it wasn’t cheap ($2,700), and I haven’t put it in the car in yet, so fingers crossed. I bought a 90-specific core (trans and xfer- 22 spline of course) from an add in these classifieds; $500 plus $120 shp. Sent them directly to TRE in Kalamazoo, MI. They should be delivered any day now. But my current trans will only go into 1st if I stopped completely, which makes around town a downer. Blasting up and down Teton Pass I don’t notice. Need to get my popup lights to pop up. But like yours, always a work in progress.

I replaced my had cv joint with a mevotech mk9617 from auto. Oreillys also sells a the Precision PRE k9617 which is the same part.

My inner boot was blown on my drivers side axle so I replaced it was an advance auto parts unit. Ncv51573. The axle was stuck in the hub so I used a loaner tool from autozone to push it out.

I see you used all the proper tools. That's always a plus. I've never had to put much effort to removing the axle end, but have heard of some horror stories where even a hydraulic press couldn't do it, and the hub got ruined. Always feels good to replace worn out old stuff with shiny new parts.

Some film shots of my previous three DSM ‘s. My first a 1991 NT 5spd (bought in 1996). No mods outside of better speakers and a car alarm.

I running into the great Gary Marsh I was reminded about the turbo models. So I sold my NT and got my second DSM, a 1990 AWD like I have now (bought in 1997) I found in Tampa. I added a Dynomax Exhaust, test pipe, Supra fuel pump, home made poor man’s profec boost controller, ran 13.9. Blew up the turbo an traded in for a Maxima.

I thought i was done with the life but i came across a 1992 AWD (bought in 1998). It already had 3” buschur turbo back, 16g, profec, intrax springs, short shifter, starion fmic. It was already running low 12s when I got it. The vpc map sensor oxided over the first time I took it to the track and I burned a valve. I put in 2g pistons, did a head job, 550s and a spearco 2-221 core.

Bonus shots of the #merkurxr4ti I bought when I last gave up the #dsmlife in 2000. I parted out and sold the 92 to a friend who stripped it. I always wanted a Merkur and found one for $800. I made the mistake of buying one that was automatic. The #c3transmission gave up 2nd gear not long after I got it.

Nice pics. My car has the same grey leather interior as your first dsm. I like this car in red, as well (though not those wipers...). I would actually prefer the color of your 92 over the Maui Blue of my 90. The lines really pop, and with the black pillars and roof, very sleek. I'll probably keep mine in the original color when it comes to a repaint. To do it right in my mind would require removing literally every piece that is fastened on to the body; the proverbial "frame-off" restoration, or whatever the equivalent for a unibody car is ("frame-on"??).

I was also a fan of the Merkur back in the day. Why they just didn't call it the Ford Sierra (which sounds good to me) is a mystery. Automatics, especially until relatively recently, were good for traffic and dedicated muscle drag cars. Not nimble cars based on rally racing.

What made it worse is they lowered the boost on the auto merkurs to make the C3 last longer so it made it even slower than the auto. I had a friend who went through two trannies on his merkur but that was because he had a bad radiator contaminanting the tranny fluid.

I’m guessing the Sierra name was already taken here in the states. I know GMC has their Sierra model.

Previously I had installed a 180 thermostat since I’ve been battling some overheating at idle. I recently noticed on the mmcd the fuel trims werent moving off of 100% so I put back in the 195 deg thermostat I was using since we are in the middle of winter. The fuel trims went back to self-adjusting as they should.

Wow ,thats vintage LOL

DSMMARIO- Are you Mario "porsche killer" Pennycook from the old dsm.org digest days?

Welcome back Mario. I remember reading your posts from back in dsm.org days. You always had good ones!

There aren’t many choices for lowering springs for 1G AWD DSMs these days. I came across some FWD Eibach sportlines a while back. I had read they didn’t fit AWD cars but I tried them anyway since there some brands selling springs that fit both. I actually loved how low the car looked and the rake it gave me. But the spring rate was a little soft and I was getting a lot of scrape. Much like on my previous teal dsm that had Intrax springs back in the day. It was an acceptable ride but was a little pitchy on new Gabriels up front and used AGXs in the back.

A local former DSMr was clearing out some old parts and got his Eibachs AWD Pro-kits springs. After installing them I was surprised how much the car went back up. The ride is definitely a little firmer but I’m a little bummed on the look. I may trim down the coils. But part of me is hesitant to do so since these spring are no longer made.

Coilovers would be great but not in my budget anytime soon.

I was noticing some implausible (such as 11F) or varying temp numbers on the mmcd for air temp. Since I’m running a vpc those and the baro numbers should be fixed because the maf is eliminated and the ecu takes a 5v signal, runs it through a series of resistors and creates a voltage to simulate a baro and air temp reading. I ordered some color
matching resistors and soldered them in the vpc loom instead of using the taps from the factory.

The car is running better. The O2 reading at cruise is more consistent and the afr under isn’t as crazy rich as it was before. And most importantly I’m seeing a consistent air temp on mmcd.

I had some time this week so I cleaned my car inside and out for the first time in a while. The exterior really needs a proper three-step with a DA but I just used what I had on hand.

Love that you’re using mmcd and a VPC. Absolutely love it. Blast from the past.

What I want to see is people running 9’s and 10’s on a 20g, 550cc injectors, and the VPC. Crazy as hell what they accomplished in those days that guys with 62mm turbos, 2150cc injectors, side exit exhausts, and gutted tin can race cars can’t even do. Lol.

I picked up an 399 Evo style maf. I was curious to see if how it would run with not fuel corrections. So I wired it up, added a KN RU-3110 filter and see how it ran. It started but idled very lean. I drove it around and it actually felt pretty good but under load it ran into the 11.x and started knock counts into the 10-12 range so I left off.

Are you using the stock 450cc injectors? And stock Fuel pressure?
I was just reading that you could run the Evo MAF with 650cc injectors. That's what I'm going try and do and see what happens. I'm trying to find some 650 low z injectors but it's almost impossible to do so. It seems like nobody has them. The is at least one member here that has successfully ran an evo 399 maf and old school fic 650cc low z injectors with 100% stock tune. And according to him, the car runs great. He mentions that he has supporting mods which should go without saying. But he did no mentioned anything in regards to Fuel pressure. Is it the 1g stock 36 psi or did he bump it up to 43.5 psi? Here is the link: https://www.dsmtuners.com/threads/evo8-maf-with-650cc-in-1g.495560/
Very interesting indeed.
