Update from FP. Turbine hub failure. No fault of my own yet I still have to buy a new one at 17% off. The turbo had 60 miles on it. So not sure what I’m going to do. Cars supposed to be going out for a cage soon. That’s a 4K hit to my budget. And then replacing a turbo at 1700 bucks really hurts the budget. Not sure what’s going to happen. Not happy that they’re not standing behind their product.

17% seems like an arbitrary number and one that could also seem negotiable. I tried to fact check there fine print on the website and couldn't find any. I wonder if their is any in the literature that comes with the turbo that you could recite, although I'm sure its likely not in your favor.

Sorry for your loss. Hopefully they can come to the table with something more favorable for you.

Which specific xr did you buy and what turbine housing? Did you ask how something like that could have happened? I know you only drove it for 60 miles but from their perspective racing is a hard 60 miles. So the whole turbo is gone? They can’t just repair? Man that does suck.

Makes me want to stray away from buying from FP....why cant people stand by their product?

Xona rotor is one i always wanted but knowing FP was behind the design always had me worried due to the stories of them never backing products, i think of them as the precision turbo chaps just abit smaller LOL,

If they do t wish to help knowing its a product failure then i would rather just say screw you and i will post my details online for the followers to see and that you dont stand behind your products! Other then that its either risk another or move to a BW or Garrett which are 2 very reliable turbos.

Also that 17% is likely there profit so they giving you the turbo profit free to them so they dont loose anything on it or they still make a small something perhaps.

Eitherway its a sucky result and reply from them and i would personslly ask for it back and go else where and log your report online.

Considering other brands can do thousands and thousands of miles and cyles without failiure im sure these 60 race miles have nothing on other brands doing alot more

It was a 5757S. With the .63AR turbine. When I got it l, I was like this is really small. I called them up and talked directly with Rob who assured me this turbo is perfect for my setup. On their page, they say how these turbos thrive in abusive environments, and that it’s a “Motorsport only” turbo. Yeah, 60 miles of racing is hard, but enough to explode the turbine wheel?

What really bothers me is this….I know Motorsport is a super abusive environment. I don’t have any delusions that stuff doesn’t break. We road race DSMs for Pete’s sake, we know about mechanical failures. I have no problem with that. If I did, I should be doing something else. No, what bothers me, is that if I was a somebody, there would be no question about getting it replaced for free. But because I’m a nobody, it’s “sorry about your failure….that’ll be 1700 bucks” for a failure that I had nothing to do with. I just wish companies would treat everyone the same. People that have show cars, have huge support to go park their car. I, and so many others, are using our cars hard. Putting them through the ringer, and we can barely get a discount on stuff. It really bothers me.

This is so true! They really should warranty it since they know it’s an internal failure. Bummer man and I feel your pain/disgust.

This! x1000%!

I hear you. It is frustrating. Seems these days you need to be a media production machine running a popular car platform to get the type of support and/or consideration you're describing - or have some really good connections.

Unfortunately, you're running road courses in a DSM and you're sharing your journey here in a forum - you're not attempting to run 7's or 6's at popular drag racing events, nor do you have a huge Youtube channel, or tens of thousands of social followers keeping track of your every achievement (or maybe you do, I don't know). You're not a big name in the DSM world. Your progress thread here has a measly 56k views and only several hundred replies (I think that's pretty decent, but we've become jaded with those sort of numbers). Not that you should have to be a media darling to get a product warrantied, but media darlings probably get special considerations.

I used to push people to take advantage of this site, via build threads and vehicle profiles, to promote their racing journey. That visibility could easily be (and has been) used to help attract sponsorship over the years. Doesn't seem to be as attractive in today's new social media-dominant environment. The allure of social media influencers is what seems to be all the rage to those making marketing decisions now. I've talked to people who get sponsored and they've told me that part of their agreement requires them to be active on social media and/or Youtube.

I get it, companies need to make a profit. Sponsorships don't help them unless the sponsoree is great at self promotion and/or does big things. They can only afford to warranty so much when it comes to motorsports failures. It doesn't make business sense to warranty every failure for products used in racing. That still doesn't make it any less frustrating in situations like this. If I were in your shoes I'd be pretty bothered too.

Are you considering different turbos now as a result?

I'm not trying to take FP's side nor do I even know the details of what happened to the turbo but I guess they think it was a user error that caused the malfunction? Did they give any explanation? Maybe you should call them. From their perspective, I'm sure they get 10 calls a day about people blowing their turbos up and they obviously can't refund everyone that happens to if they deem it user error.

To add more data to the conversation, I follow a couple of other build threads and one guy's 6466 went out at like 20 miles. Another guy's comp turbo went out after a couple of passes. Comp replaced, PTE didn't if I recall.

I was thinking the same thing. They probably get a bunch of warranty claim requests and they have to make some business decisions on which ones truly are justified based on their warranty terms. And I'm sure warranties don't extend much to racing conditions due to the nature of racing. I think most realize that this is the reality with most parts companies.

It just sucks to see this happen to someone like Jesse who has been in the DSM community for 20+ years, documenting his journey in Time Trials here for such a long time, and inspiring many other DSMers in the process. Maybe he doesn't have the notoriety or name recognition of others in the community, which might have resulted in a different outcome (maybe not, who knows), but you'd still like to see someone like him get a little extra consideration.

I called them yesterday, and after talking with them, they are of the opinion that my charge pipe failures last year def contributed to this failure. The 17% off the bigger turbo is still on the table and I’ll probably take it. I do have some sponsorship in the way of funding, if you notice the Early Bird Capital and Graubard Miller decals on the car. They essentially throw me a check at the start of the season, and I do everything I can to make it work for the season.

The biggest issue I had with buying a new turbo was what it would do with the budget for the year. The cars going out for a cage that’s gonna be about 4 grand, and then replacing the turbo, would take a huge chunk out of the budget. I talked to my sponsorship guys, and they very generously upped my yearly budget by a good amount. Now I can do the cage, and buy the turbo, and enter the events I want to race at including at least one GTA event. Still going to need more funding for consumables, but hopefully we can talk to some more people and get them onboard. Every little bit helps. Appreciate this forum a ton. Been a member here for a long time. It’s always been a great place for info and community. I even remember the Tuners Myrtle beach event in ‘03. Rained a bunch, but we were there! Good times.

I'd find another option for 1700 bucks. I'd personally move to a different brand of turbo.

what you mean your silicone couplers that split? how does that make a metal hub shaft fail and cause it to break off? its still doing a job of sucking in air regardless of coupler or not so that to me is just another weak ass excuse im sorry!!!

i say go with another brand myself also, i wont be looking at them anymore either and will look back to BW or Garrett as my next turbo was going to be an XR but now it wont be if they are going to claw their way out of this from crappy failures!!!

im sorry they done this to you dude.

Cause when the turbo is loaded, making boost, and a coupler pops, the turbo over speeds since the load is gone. That over speed puts stress on the weld on the turbine wheel.

no different then running more PSI then no. i guess since its not got a shaft sensor you cannot log that and prove it was nut over ran. thats the only other way to help your case in the future if you go back to that turbo

New turbo from Xona Rotor came in. I decided to stay with them just to see how it goes. If it truly was the blown intercooler pipes that caused the wheel to fail, then it is what it is. Excited about trying this new setup.

Another thing that kinda came together recently is a buddy is going to sell me some 18x9.5 +15 RPF1s with a set of scuffed in yoko A052. So that’ll be nice upgrade as well. Think there’s gonna need to be some body “adjustments” made LOL

Turbo overspeed is a serious issue that will kill any brand of turbo. Maybe not as spectacularly as this FP failed, but fail nonetheless. Sorry that happened man, but it's good to see you in good spirits and getting the car back together!

If the 6466 you're talking about is mine, they did replace it. They were unable to tell why the turbine wheel shattered itself. I have a BNIB 6466 sitting around now.

Thanks man. Failures are part of racing. If I let it bother me to the point of stopping, my heart wasn’t in it to begin with. It’ll get fixed and get back out there!
