Well for starters: Do the maintenance!
I was in your boat at this time last April, and all I can remember people telling me was to put on a new timing belt, water pump, etc. Its a great way to get under the car and learn where everything is, but also really important to keep the car healthy. Also make sure to chase all the leaks you have, and to fix the problems that the previous owner said the car had. Keep an eye out for any new leaks, issues that arise as well.
Something else to do is to go through these forums and research what issues your model will have. May I suggest the Resources section of the website?
That's how I decided what my path for the car was going to be, I went and looked over the "Common Upgrade Paths". That page also gives you some simple things to do if you are looking to work on the car more.

Otherwise, good luck with your build! Glad to see new DSM'ers like me on the forums!

She rough and needs some love, but she's mine.

Wash her up and get to work new dsm buddy, that fabric cover is a pain but with some research and a little cash you can have that car looking great before you know it. Awesome stock blue color by the way

I just got the car and am researching what all I want/ have the ability to do to this car. Any suggestions on where to start for someone new to dsm and car modifications in general. I am using this car to learn.
maintenance is critical. You never know how often the previous owner changed fluids and other accessories. So change oil, coolant, trans fluid, power steering fluid, inspect accessory belts and timing belt for any wear and replace if needed. inspect spark plugs for any fouling and check spark plug wires too. Before any aftermarket mods are added make sure shes in tip top shape.

First wash. Had to scrub off some old duct tape. Scrated some of the clear coat but there's lots of clear coat damage already. A couple dings here and there. Got the interior fabric screwed up to keep the critters out until I can get a new top. Going to wind up getting some color match paint pretty soon to deal with the the chips and some clear coat to get her pretty.
