Hello all, I hope every one has had a great weekend! So I'm in the process of getting a detached garage and not sure yet on the size I'm wanting. I've been thinking a 30x30 or a 34x40 with a 14ft ceiling. But I was wanting to see if any you guys on here could chime in with your garages and what you like or dislike about it. Mine will be a pole barn style so I could add on to it later but I'd like to not have to do that for awhile. Lol
I'll be working on my dsm's and dodge 2500 in there mostly that's why I'm thinking of the 34x40. But like I said I figured I'd see what you guys have and what yall like.

30x40x12.
2 insulated metal garage doors
1 entry door
2 windows
Cement pad
Plumbed for a toilet and sink
On a leveled pad.
9k 2 post lift
Constructed in 3 days.
$32500 here.

Yeah I forgot to mention that it's 100% getting water and power. Lol hell might get a kitchen incase if the wife gets mad. 🤣

@1990TSIAWDTALON do you have a separate service for power or a sub panel? Nice setup btw!

Heat and air unit will come In a year or two. It's get to damn hot in nc to enjoy hobbies comfortably.

Why 14’ height? Just curious. Mine is 12’ like Marty’s and I can’t imagine how I would use any higher space. Without a library ladder for storage racks LOL. The avg lift is 145” so you’ve got plenty of room with a 12’ wall. I do suggest getting as big as the space you have or your budget allows. It fills up VERY quickly.
Mine is 20x25. In a small suburban cul de sac lot. Made sure my tundra would fit and that was as much yard as my wife would let me have. No lights or lift yet and I’ve got about 10k each in the slab and building. I got it right before the 20% price increase.

Go as big as you can although unless you plan on putting a lift in there I'd only go 12' with the ceilings. 14' just makes for more space to cool in the summer and heat in the winter.

Lol beer fridge shall certainly be installed. I was thinking 14ft so I can do a loft space over on one of the sides for storage. Or maybe along the back. As for the 14ft ceiling, the reason is since I'm going to be working on the truck as well the lift is a 12k lift and needs a 14ft. It measure 13' 8"

30x50 here with i think 16ft ceilings. Was built 5 years ago. Think it was around 50k by time it was built and concrete done and power ran. Has tons of outlets and lights, 220v outlets too. Concrete was 6in reinforced with drains.

@jed344 so I was thinking about putting a drain right under the lift. How do you like yours?

Also for lighting I can't make up my mind if I should go with fluorescent or led. So It may be different but I'm in the reefing hobby as well and using led lights on a tank can cause more dead spots than using like a t5 fluorescent fixture. Makes me lean to just using like a t8 fixture or something like that.

Thanks, yes I have a separate panel off of my main on the pole just for the shop. Then the shop has a seperate breaker box for each wall, 220 HVAC, 220 LIFT, 220 welder outlet and lighting. It is a 100 amp service.
Sorry the shop is cluttered, we are just cleaning up after several projects and toy builds. Actually in the middle of the last one before a good cleaning up.
I should have built this shop YEARS ago to be honest. I ran kerosene heat last year but may go with propane, I'd have to trench across my yard for NG. It has a 220 AC unit from my moms house that now has central heat and air so she no longer needed her big window unit.

Agree on the go bigger if you can. My brother tried to talk me into 30' x 40' when we did mine years ago but I was convinced 24' x 30' would be plenty since I had been working in a single car port forever. Big mistake, wish I would have gone bigger and added plumbing for a sink. I did add a mini split about 3/4 years ago, oh how nice that is.

Yeah thats why I'm pulling the trigger now with a shop. I keep telling myself next year and then I come up with a excuse not to. But I'm tired of working on the ground at home when I'm at work all day working on other people's cars on a lift.

That’s the same reason for me! I was so spoiled by having the lift to use at work that when I left the dealer I didn’t want to work on my own stuff anymore.

The light bulbs I bought for my fixtures pop in like regular t8 but they are led. They look great. I didn't want dedicated led fixtures. They're a little pricey and if I have to deal with it I have to do the whole fixture. None of it was expensive either. Got it at lowes.

Yes, my shop is all LED too but I got them from Amazon in sets of 4 that daisychain to each other (just 4 at a time). They were $100/4 when I put mine in. GREAT lighting as far as coverage and they are mounted directly to the rafters that are 12' up.
I can fit 4 cars in or 5 if I put one on the lift and one under it when the shop isn't cluttered.

I got these ones for my garage, have 9 of them installed and they're pretty bright:

My garage is still a mess from our move in December but little by little I'm cleaning up and trying to get it organized. I'll share some of my efforts here pretty soon. Near the top of my To-Do list is getting a big shed to move a lot of stuff out of the garage to keep it cleaner. I have a lot of tools and materials for landscaping and property maintenance in there that don't need to be in there. I'm also hoping to put up an awning on the side of the garage to have a covered area for storage and also an outdoor woodworking area so that I don't have to do that type of work in the garage all the time.

I have 2 pop up Canapys I use out on my west side if I have too with the doors open but today we ran the AC.
Heres a tip for all....I use magnetic fender covers for the garage door windows and it looks like the shop is always dark. They work as an insulator too but only stick to metal doors.
I don't need nosey vagrants walking by my country home wanting to get shot......I had one today, met them with my .40.

Yeah i was thinking if I got a set of doors with windows I was going to tint them. Luckily I don't have much to worry around where I'm at, not much has happened for the last 25 years. :D
I'll have a look around on what led fixtures are on amazon. I'm over going to lowes I feel like I'm there every week with a new project. Haha

A 48'x24'x14' shop came with when we bought the house. Fits 6 cars (or 7 with one on the lift) but I have a couch and tv and work area in the back so most of the time there are 3-4 cars inside the shop. Has 3 10ft doors, a ceiling fan and 3 electric small shop heaters. I wanted to insulate the walls, but super expensive. Roof is insulated which is a plus, has a 10k lift, 60gal compressor air throughout and 220V outlets and water but no drains.
I recommend insulation, heat pump, drains, water, a lift of course, 220v. Bigger is always better, easier to fill in the space inside then trying to make room LOL.
Talon on the lift draining trans fluid for trans swap and the 4G63LUV sitting pretty for now.

This is what I bought. They are plug in and don't daisy chain. May not be what you need but they are cheap. If you had hardwired fixtures you still need a j-box. I'm currently adding outlets on my ceiling to plug all these in.

I used a t8 led replacement bulb from ge.

Puts it a little over 20$ per fixture with bulbs.

My advice having been down this path several times in my life at this point is to figure out what you *NEED* right now to cleanly store what you have (cars/equipment), and then double it if the budget allows.

The structure itself is the bones.

Some people will say "Well, if you go TOO big, you have to heat/cool it". No. You don't. If you're going this far, it's easy to partition off a section if it's "only storage".

I've got around 4200 sq./ft. of combined garage space on the property (3 car, under-house garage, an "RV Garage" and another large pole building), and two sheds that come in around 400 sq/ft each. I'd LOVE to bump out the RV garage at this point.

The realtor who sold us this property quipped "Oh my! You'll never fill all of this storage space!" I just laughed and thought about how much I'd have to get rid of to pare down.
