Big update here:
Replaced all seals, belts, rollers, and clutch system with the stuff in the first picture. (Southbend stage 1, oem parts, coolant flush, tranny oil replacement, etc.)
The second picture is a failed attempt to fix a slippery clutch, and a successful oil change. (Don't bash the oil I'm using you filthy, filthy purists. Its my car after all :nono:)

The guy who replaced the clutch and the seals also went through and diagnosed some stuff.
My cruise control was deleted, my AC compressor doesn't have a belt, I apparently have an Injen cold air intake system, a Forge BOV (which I knew about beforehand), and a HKS 3" cat-back exhaust system. My interior is actually Brown and not Gray. The engine is entirely original, checked the vin's. However, we believe the top valve cover was replaced at some point, because the engine bay is too clean for 200k miles.

2nd gear has a bad synchro though:notgood::banghead:
After all the money spent on this replacement, still gotta pay 2k for a good AWD tranny :(
Also, I'm to bad of a mechanic to do a clutch replacement, or a tranny teardown myself. Hell, I'm 18 and have only been working on cars for like 1/2 a year, so don't yell at me...

Will update once I got the new tranny. Thanks for the visit!

I'm glad I could share my knowledge and skills to get the car a little more reliable.

A couple of notes. I believe the whole cylinder head was replaced/rebuilt. Not just the valve cover.

You also have Tein Flex Z coil overs, so you can add that to your mods list.

Probably what I meant to say, just said it wrong.

I was actually changing my profile as you responded, so it is done!

Wow ive never seen or heard of a tsi with brown interior, I have seen only two in my life span and those where esi's, one of which is my little brothers now.

Good start! Any future plans?
None yet! I want to fix a bunch of stuff first, like the Cruise Control delete, My AC compressor, Black Paintjob, etc. No racecar plans though.

I had only read about it, when I saw it in person for the first time I 100% thought it was gray. Its a bit faded, but it is brown!

I also got a new front bumper which will go on when I go and get a paintjob. Can’t wait!
+10 points to the person who can guess the exact year this bumper is ;)

It's a 97 to 99 eclipse bumper. Your talon headlights don't exactly fit that bumper either. Plan for that.

Well, I took the car to @IHeartMyHonda to get the tranny replaced, with a boost leak test and a compression test to go with it, as well as some more minor maintenance .
the good news: the "new" tranny is in.
the bad news: there is piston ring failure on cylinder 1, which is causing compression levels of around 50 as opposed to the 135-140
The costs to fix this officially puts me and my dad upside down on this car, as we were hoping the tranny was the last major expense, and we could start saving for new paint and wheels. My next course of action is unknown at the moment. I still don't plan on selling the car, but this engine rebuild is probably going to take all summer. After all, I've never torn apart an engine before, i wont have the money for new internals for a while, and may just end up buying a new engine to swap in so i can get to college with a running car. Probably the worst news i've heard in a while. Chances are you'll see me being more active on the forums asking about engines and engine internals once i graduate. Shame i cant graduate with a well running car though
Also, you can see some progress on the spreadsheet. Not like it really matters at the moment, but i guess it's still there.
Thats all for now, more updates to come

Yeah, sorry for the bad news. I know it's hard watching a ship slowly sinking like that. The low compression was on cylinder 2 though. I'll pick up a leak-down tester this week and verify the failure.

I did manage to find 2 major boost leaks though from your throttle body gasket and BISS oring. I'll keep hunting for them over the next few days

I'm in agreement. Leakdown test is in order. If it a not consuming oil or blowing smoke something besides rings seems more suspect. Possible easy...ish fix.

Been a while, but I'm back! Currently working my ass off during my summer vacation to raise enough money for an engine rebuild. No forged internals or anything, just a mostly OEM rebuild. I'm sending the engine off to get rebuilt by someone that isn't me so it gets done right.

However, while its gone I plan on replacing the radiator, brakes, fixing my doors, de-leaking the rear hatch, A/C replacement, new windshield wiper motors + hoses, cleaning or replacing my cone air filter, a coil pack replacement, and a lot of cleaning in the engine bay.

Total cost for everything I listed above is probably around 2-2.5k. What a blow, even just typing that made me cringe. But; it will literally be an entirely different car when I get the engine back. It's a shame I bought the car in the condition it was in, so now I'm (literally) paying for my mistakes. Even with that said, I'm still super excited for what is to come though!

The Gigglebox and my Dad's 944 also went to the most recent Nashville Cars & Coffee, where the Talon was the only 2g DSM I saw there (I could be blind though, very possible). Although there was a couple late 3g's and a couple Evo's lurkin around.

Check the google sheet to see other things I've done recently. One of them was a new stereo. Both the inside and outside of the car sound amazing now.
I'll update as I start getting the engine out, and new parts start comin in, but I gotta get paid first LOL

I'm back again! The engine is now with @IHeartMyHonda undergoing a mostly stock rebuild. Nothing too crazy in the engine, just a time to get those compression numbers back to something healthy! In the meantime, I have a lot of work to do on my car myself as well. Both doors arent opening from the outside, the brakes are, to put it nicely, "bad", and my radiator finally broke. Still plenty to do with just the shell.

Just as a sidenote to anyone reading, if you are selling a good condition 14b turbo with barely any to no shaft play, DM me and I'll take a look.

Posting again because of more progress (sorta, progress just means spending more money).

The engine turned out to be very out of spec in respect to the bore. So, I'm now getting forged internals with a bit of an extra bore. So that "stock rebuild" I was talking about before is now not stockLOL
Finally got the caliper brackets to do a Outlander Brake swap. I already had the rotors for it so I was kinda screwed if I didn't get them.
Who would have though that working on the doors would be more difficult that pulling the engine? Not me, turns out they are.
Got a case of "While your in there" syndrome so I ended up snagging some new upper control arms and adjustable ball joints. Oh and also a 14b turbo and a black box ecu.

And now I keep looking at this Spyder when I drive home from my college. I haven't driven a DSM in so long that my brain has half-decided on buying another one. I need to go into the building and ask the guy what he wants for it because it appears to be in horrible shape. If its under like 1500$ I might jump on it.

Got the good news from @IHeartMyHonda that the block looked good. And, yeah, it looks great! The machine shop looks like they did a great job with it!

While he buttons up the inside of the engine with the new internals that I put in my profile's parts list (wisco pistons, eagle rods, 3g lifters), I have a car to put back together LOL.
So I went ahead and replaced my shifter base bushings with Energy Suspension bushings, and I managed to actually fix one of my doors to open again! I never thought that doors would be an issue with my project car but here I am :banghead:

Who would have though that working on the doors would be more difficult that pulling the engine? Not me, turns out they are.
These are the words of someone who wasn't doing their job correctly. I was so wrong in this quote here, it was barely a 15 minute job to put that thing back together. Shame on me...

Now its time to fix the passenger door when I get the chance. Oh, and the engine once I get it back of course.

Maybe I'll take pictures of all of the new parts I have laying around the garage if people are interested enough. Let me know if you want to see all the shiny stuff! Or I can post more pictures of my faded brown interior ROFL
