Engine started making this noise, now I'm not really sure where to go from here. Any help diagnosing would be great. Probably drop the oil pan shortly. Timing is on. Head components are new, new lifters that were bled.

Hard to tell by seeing the video. First I thought it was massive exhaust leak or valves slightly contacting pistons. Maybe it's only me but I now feel more that maybe you have some electric leakage. Isn't the engine/manifolds making sparks? I can't be so sure by seeing the video. but just in case, I suggest to check all spark plug cables, coil packs, PTU, all wires for battery, ground wires etc etc.

Will def do that, but it's def metal on metal. I scoped the pistons and don't see any marking. I have a suspicion about cams and timing, so I'm starting there for now. Keep the options coming! I'll definitely check the electrical.

Is it auto? If so, also you should make sure if the flexplate or its bolts are not contacting with anything.

With cams out I should be able to rotate engine without fear of valves hitting pistons, correct?
You mean, without the cams on the head? if so, correct. All valves should be closed when you remove the cams, so pistons wouldn't contact.

Yep. Just making sure. Will rotate the crank to check the flywheel bolts. I'm assuming I should see some scouring if they're rubbing anything. They didn't rub with a previous head, but it's always good to check. Also want to make sure it rotates fine. What are some causes of binding once the cams are in and timing belt is on?

I just watched the video with a bigger monitor now. Is that just noise from camera or some sort of lens effect? I see a lot of noises look like sparks, especially between the firewall and the engine.

Hmmm, didn't notice it in person. I'll have to check this out when I start it again. Good catch!

Yes or maybe it came apart. Maybe a rocker fell out???
Checked rockers, everything in the head was intact. I pulled to cams tonight to put stock back in and see about the rotation. I didn't get everything back together, but I'm starting to suspect these cams I bought second hand. Should get everything back together and timed tomorrow. Before I install the cams I'll be checking for anything people have already mentioned. Thank you for all your suggestions. Hoping to fix this and be able to update what it was.

I’d check what Hiroshi mentioned first. It does look like it arching all over the place. If you have the cams off now, take a good look everything because whatever is making that noise will leave marks. Try to isolate where the noise is, head, bottom end, front back left right. Use your hands and ears.

Yeah, I haven't run it since. It scares the hell out of me. I went searching for the sound with a screw driver but it just seemed everywhere I looked I could feel/hear it. I want to check the starter for sure. I have some hypothesis' in my mind. But, that electrical thing is one the list of things to check. I feel like I'd have seen those in real time but maybe not.

For the ground from firewall to stock intake manifold, any ideas where to reground that, right now I tried to squeeze it between the throttle cabke mount and the throttle cable. Wondering if that's good enough.

Still one of possibilities or maybe it's a different issue or maybe nothing is wrong. but yeah just in case, should make sure about this. I see those spark-ish things around the fuel regulator, too. So be careful not to cause fire. Where are you mounting the coil pack?

Jmf coil pack relocation. So, under manifold, above the ac compressor.

Looks like I'll be breaking out the tester I got a few weeks ago

Before you tear into it to deeply, I also think I saw sparks by you fpr. Also take out the starter to look for damage as mentioned. See if the flexplate inspection cover and flexplate are free from marks. I had both happen to me. I also had a rocker fall off on a previous motor and it was barley audible. Rotate crank by hand and see if you can feel binding. Pull plugs and looks for anything abnormal. If you rotate crank by hand and seems to check ok. Then I would look at the starter. Before tearing stuff apart, do a compression and leak down test. That info is good to have anyway. I assume you timed it correctly?

Quick update. Pulled the starter, looks to be in good condition. (It was brand new) no harm in checking. I did find the flex plate to be loose. Like all the bolts came out half a turn (for convo sake) and the flex plate will wiggle back and forth and hit the bolts (making a metal on metal striking sound) if I wiggle the crank shift. I think that may be our culprit. Thoughts?

Everything in the head looked great. Bottom end looked good when I pulled the head last week.
