Hey all,

So I'm about 3 months into my DSM journey, and covered all the basic maintenance (fluids, oils, timing belts, water pump) and I wasn't sure where else to post these questions.

1996 GSX 86k miles.
My engine stays hot hours after I turn off the car, I mean scorching hot. Is this normal on a 4G63?

And also, how reliable is the fuel gauge in this car?
I'll drive for a day or so with regular fuel consumption and then park it for a day or two and have it drop considerably in the guage. Is this the nature of the beast?

Thanks in advance everyone.

I drive it about 15 mins to work and another 15 back home, maybe a little but longer if I'm running errands, but I don't really get on boost during those times at all. Mostly cruising. It stays hot for several hours after that. I can park it at 3pm and at 9pm it's still too hot to touch.

It also reaches operating temp fairly quickly, like two blocks away and it's there quickly.

Forgive my ignorance as this is both my first DSM and first turbocharged engine. Just trying to figure out what's normal.

Do you know what your coolant temps are? If it’s a really hot day my valve cover will stay hot for a couple hours. Plenty of aluminum and heatsoaking.

That said my coolant temps are around 202-203 while running.

Is it overheating? if its not its likely ok, your in Cali where the outside temps are high, of course its going to take longer for it to cool down.

Had the same problem with my car, Switch out the thermostat and that fixed it. The car was still hot, but not after 6 hours. More like 2 1/2 it was warm. I found out that these cars do run hot, so you need to stay on top of your basic maintenance.
Good luck.

'Too hot to touch' is very subjective. That said, after 6 hours it should be at ambient temps...

Of course, by too hot to touch what I mean is, anyone with any good discernment wouldn't hold their hand there longer than 2 seconds.

Not sure but I'm guessing they're as close to normal as possible?

Not overheating. Just seems to take forever to cool down. Maybe you're right about the Cali heat playing a part in it.

Thank you. I just wasn't sure if it running hot was normal or not. Did you run the factory thermostat or something cooler?

You know what.. I don't remember. I know I went to Auto Zone and ask them for help. I picked the one that cost the most, they had like three options, I think I paid something like 20 - 25 for it. It was one of the first things I did to the car just to be able to drive it with out the heater being on to keep the car from over heating / staying hot. It worked. it still gets hot even after having it on for like 10 mins, but it cools down and doesn't over heat.

Just a thought, and it's a cheap fix. It's just a pain having to drain your coolant and swap it out. Should take about 40 to 60 mins.
