so long story short, i pulled onto the highway on a very busy father's day grabbed 2nd hard and stripped the teeth on my shep stage 3. all gears work besides 2nd. i have multiple stock awd transmissions. 1- 93 and a couple 90's. i also have a fwd from a 98 can i swap 2nd with the duel synchros from that? i have a transmission guy, but to be honest I'm not a tranny guy. any ideas would be great. obviously I'd like to keep my shep in the car. thanks

If other gears work you probably didn't strip teeth. You probably broke a fork or a rail end. Stripped teeth will go everywhere and destroy other stuff.
Take it apart and find out.

What you can and can't swap will also depend on what year trans is currently in the car. You need to provide more information please.

Mine is a kw5m332npzs, which shows it's a 89-90 eclipse tran . I bought the roller and trans from the same guy. Cars a 91, any way to tell if the shift linkage is from a 90?

I'm using a 23 spline t- case? I'll get more info when I get more LOL

Assuming it is a 90 inside no you can't use a double cone 2nd. Not without changes. If it is for sure 23 spline somebody changed it.
You have to rip it apart anyway. Maybe time to gain some knowlwdge?

in the process of removing transmission now, still need to do some research on the breakdown procedure at least enough to see what gear set i have and the damage. to clarify this didn't happen upon entry of second, but right about peak torque. i found this when i drained my fluid also alot of non ferris aluminium and bronze flakes

that's what ive discovered so far... fingers crossed but not looking promising

update: transmission is out and at my transmission guy. decided to bring it there whole so it wasn't in a box of parts "which he appreciates" LOL. i will be posting pictures of the damage and gearset so you guys can further help which it's very appreciated!

The way to tell the cables apart is by the adjustment on the shifter base. The 90 cables are adjustable on both. On 91 cables only one cable is. Now you shouldn't need to change cables if you have 90s as they are adjustable. The only combo that wont work is the 91 cables on a 90 trans.

Those bits look like aluminum which would coincide with a broken shift fork. Does a magnet pick them up?

you know Pauly I'm not sure.... it was a used Trans but always worked beautifully! maybe improper clutch adjustment with my twin disk? what are my options? I would love to keep the shep. I have a fwd 98 Trans. two 1st gen 23 spline awd and one 90 awd laying around, but that's a spare for my wife's

you can hodge podge whatever you want. I have seen dozens of units that were "fine" but had 50 thousandths play in the input and intermediate. Guess what happens to gear tooth contact when taper bearings have that much axial play. There are always tell tale signs on the interior of the case when its bad enough.

grab the input shaft of any of your spares. Does it move? It shouldn't. Read carefully. Input shaft not output. Output has no taper bearings and it moves all over the place.

my tranny guy figures the fork broke which caused the carnage. he said i need a new input shaft, which means I'd need an evo 3 input shaft with my evo 3 gearset correct? if so they are discontinued. any help is appreciated, he's relying on me for most of the info as this is a little out of his realm☹ and mine LOL

2nd gear is toast. Evo b or not you need a new input shaft. Are you running evo 1st and 2nd?

That is a DSM ratio 1/2/3/4. you need a 90-99 DSM AWD input shaft and DSM MD748577 double synchro 2nd gear.

OK I appreciate it i was under the impression it was the evo gearset. if I can use a dsm input shaft things are looking more positive for me!

sorry for my lack of knowledge on transmissions, but if that is a DSM gearset what makes this tranny better then a stock one?

It is essentially a stock one, it is a 1990-91.5 style 3/4 conversion that had slightly stronger gear tooth profile and stronger 3/4 hub and slider assembly than the later stuff.

So this is the 91 car that your profile lists as a “drag car”? How much hp/tq does it make? Must be pretty gutsy to do that much damage.

that is unfortunate to hear Tim. I was told this was a shep stage 3. I called shep with the 4- digit serial number and it pulled up as a stage 3 built in 09 for almost 4k, obviously not the case. do you guys still have these parts?

yes this is the white 91. it's got no guts without the tranny LOL. haven't put this one on a dyno yet if I had to guess close to 500hp. I could look at some logs but idk how accurate that is

Looks like a shep stage 3, is it a 4 spider or a welded center diff?

You dont understand, the 90 style 3/4 conversion stuff IS A SHEP STAGE 3. That's all it is.
