Hi everyone, I have a 95 Eagle Talon and it’s always had this problem where the steering wheel just won’t return to center. When I hit bumps in the road the car just goes crazy it’s all over the place and wanders all over the road.I have looked through the forums for months trying to figure out what the issue is. I have already replaced every suspension component in the front of the car along with the rear and I did a camber kit in the rear. the only thing I haven’t done yet is the alignment which It’s going in soon. do you guys think it could be the rack and Pinion or just an alignment issue any help is appreciated thanks

Get your alignment done ASAP. This will do one of two things:
1) Ensure your car is within safe/OE alignment. Your camber/toe may be a bit out of spec. causing your unpredictable handling.

2) Identify a component failure you may have overlooked.

It’s going it on the 11th for the alignment. Haven’t really been driving because it’s pretty scary as you could imagine. The only thing suspension wise i havent Replace is the rear bushings. The car also eats front tires within a few thousand miles so I know it desperately needs an alignment. But other then that everything has been replaced and checked. No visible leaks from the rack

The toe is whacked & if it's eating tires in a couple K it's whacked a lot. Bad toe will make the steering wheel hard to return to center & track all over the place as the weight changes from tire to tire.

Would miss-aligned toe cause the steering to essentially lock up in a turn? I can turn the to the left and it stays no mater where I turn it and it’s the same for the right. Also when revering the wheel will center a lot easier.

Self centering is a caster issue and can be part of toe and the combo of it all working aginst each other, get it setup and then you can find where the issue may be

Yes. Alignment should have been done long ago.

Also if you replaced steering components you must align it. You cannot just "eyeball" it. You can do home measurements at the very least. Again just go have it aligned. If you plan on keeping the car pay for lifetime and anytime you replace anything on suspension then go have it aligned again.

I had the exact same problem, woundnt return to center even after many alignments... turned out I replaced the lateral and compression arms with aftermarket components but they contacted and not allow to return the steering wheel to center. See attached pic, check you components very close for this, you will see a contact patch on close up of the lateral and compression arm joints. This what caused my steering to not return to center. Look for that if you still havent found your problem.

Just one more check...

Brad

I replaced everything with oem components except my coil overs. I will say when I got everything together it did look really close. I’ll post a pic tomorrow

Ok I will try and get a pic of mine when I finally replaced with oem components, I did notice there was a considerably larger gap with the oem's, they weren't even close. Once I replaced them, the car handled great. I am not saying that is your problem, but trust me, I replaced everything in the front end trying to solve the problem including a rack and pinion and nothing solved it until that contact patch was found but the alignment guy with the car on the alignment rack and then I replaced those 2 components amd the car was amazing!
