My 1997 GST oil gauge doesn’t work because the wires are broke under the car. Checked two local parts stores and each one is calling both the light switch and the one for the gauge different names.

Advanced calls them both Oil Pressure Switch and Auto Zone calls them both Oil Sending Switch

So which is which?

Top pic is the sending unit for the factory oil pressure gauge, bottom is the switch for the dummy light.

thanks, the light switch doesn’t even have the connector on it anymore and the wire doesn’t even have the plug on it, so was going to order them. And the sending unit wire is cut where the black clip is, so was going to get another wire for it.

Just use a female electrical wire connector they will clip on to the dummy light switch and sending unit nicely. Like one that comes in a butt splice terminal connector pack.

yea I got a ton of them here at work, but I’m going to have to buy the light switch, as the connector is broke off. Local Advanced has one for $13

Here's what I did for a connector for the oil pressure light switch which had a screw in the end of it.

Guessing the sending unit is going bad,, I hooked it up just like yours with a female connector and when I turn the car on the oil gauge comes up barely and just sits there.
Also, seems to be some liquid coming from somewhere around that area. Everything around there looks like it's coated with brake fluid, but can't find anything leaking.

Also,, what does the brown wire go to? I got a white wire going to the sending unit, a blue/white wire going to the dummy light switch and a brown wire going to nothing.

Also, what's the braided line going to that's right under the light switch? yours is going toward the front of the car and mine goes back under the car

Looks like yours has a black tee connector where someone spliced another line into the oil sending unit wire. The yellow/red stripe becomes a blue wire after the black connector. This is added on. It may have been a wire for an aftermarket gauge at one time? It looks poorly spliced into the yellow wire just before the black plastic connector. I would get rid of the black plastic connector and run the yellow wire/red stripe directly to the sending unit, like mine...it has a yellow wire with the red stripe going directly to the pressure sending unit. See my earlier photo.

Solid yellow wire (possiblity the brown one stained from heat and oil leaks?) goes to oil pressure switch (dummy light).

Blue wire with white stripe goes up to top of power steering pump. It is the power steering pressure switch. Per factory service manual for 1998 GST. Should be same as 97. Check your wires carefully cuz someone added that lame blue wire to your setup. Don't confuse it with the other blue/white stripe wire for the power steering pump.

I don't think the 2g has an oil cooler so the braided line is probably for the turbo oil feed.

BTW, I got a new oil light switch on eBay for $6. Works fine.

Mine has a yellow wire with the red stripe going straight to the pressure sending unit.

Appreciate it, it's 93 degrees outside so I'm trying to wait until the sun goes down some and go outside and see what else I can get going. I'll try to find where the blue/white wire plugs up. Then try the brown wire to the oil light switch. Thanks for that ebay switch, I'll order one of those tonight.

Do you know if unplugging the ECU will mess anything up? dude I got it from said he had it tuned when he had the cams installed and I'd hate to mess anything up as it's my only vehicle to get to work in and I don't have ECMLink or anything, I'm just seriously wondering if it does have ECMLink or did have at one time, because the IAT and MAP sensors are ran thru the firewall all the way under the dash but they are unplugged and just laying next to the ECU and the ECU has been unbolted and moved. And funny thing, I told the guy 2 days before I drove the 5/12 hours to buy the car that I was coming,, and he wanted to meet at a Wal-Mart and said he could see the walmart from his house, yet it still took him over an hour to bring me the car. So I honestly think he was taking a few parts off and putting stock parts back on to re-sell the aftermarket ones. But he claimed he was cleaning the car out, yet he had 2 days to clean it out from when I told him I was def going to buy it.

When you first turn the key on does the oil light come on? If not, then it is not connected to the proper wire. I would try that brown (yellow) one for the dummy light.

As for the ECU, aaaaahhhhhhhHHHHHH WELL....
It's possible he had ecmlink and a speed density setup but who knows.... If you unplug the ECU, just as if you were to disconnect the battery, it will reset some parameters but should still run. If that's the stock ECU it is not really something you can tune unless you put a specially programmed chip in it. You would have to take it apart and look to see if it has a chip or not.

Yes sir, the brown/yellowish wire made the oil light come on. The yellow wire made the oil gauge kinda work, doesn't go up very far when I first crank it up. And as for the power steering pump wire, I gotta find a connector / nut for it to fit and that'll be ready to go. Thanks for the help! Slowly learning everything about the car
