i am hoping someone might be able to point me in the direction of a shop that would be willing to upgrade my w4a33 transmission with a shift kit and kiggly 6 friction clutchpack. i was turned down by tmz in greenbay just because they are so far behind in work. and beyond redline said they wouldnt do that kind of thing. tmz told me to talk to daren thomas racing ut he said he would only do a full rebuild for 2500 dollars. looking for somewhere with credibility as i want my build to be reliable above all else and im willing to shell out some cash but 2500 is a bit steep as i have other parts to buy.

ps, of your advice is you have fast cheap and reliable and you can only pick two. i would kindly ask you to save it as i have thrown near 10,000 into this build all in all and i dont even have a turbo or wastegates yet and that is going to be about another 3000. im just looking for a good place to install the parts i have but still would tell me if i have some parts that need replacing.
 
Very few mess with the Auto Transmissions. DTR as you mentioned is a good shop to have go through the trans, he is usually backed up also though. Then you need to deal with shipping the trans out and these W4A33's are not light. Metro trans in Washington is also another great place to go. They do offer valve body services, but if you listen to DTR, they would never service a valve body without the case and trans at their shop. Then there's import performance trans in New Jersey.

Due to only a few shops dealing with these transmissions and how backed up they are, I really suggest doing the install on the clutches and shift kit yourself. It's not too difficult, you will also gain a lot of knowledge in case something goes wrong down the road, you already know how to do it. Say your converter comes apart or have a pump failure, you really need to disassemble the trans and valve body to clean out the metal and clutch material, you'll already be comfortable with this. You just need a clean, well lit bench or area to disassemble the valve body. The instructions with the Translab Shift Kits are quite clear. Import Performance Trans also has some very good videos on youtube on shift kit install and other info on the w4a33s. Unless your doing a full rebuild you don't need any special tools to install the shift kit and 6 friction clutch pack. But I would likely do it while your in there.
 
DTR has a "rush" service for $850 (I think) on top of the rebuild cost and freight. I have a friend that burned up his and needed it soon for a upcoming track event and he got it in record time, but had to pay the price of course. This was just last week, I believe. I tried to buy his old transmission but he wouldn't sell it to me.....dam!
I would have bought a rebuild kit and fixed it myself, oh well.....

Edit, there is a thread going where a person is converting a 2g auto to a 2g stick, you may want to send him a PM and see if the trans is still hanging around and ask if it might be for sale.
 
Just wanted to add that the 6 friction front clutch pack tends to not last as long, since the material is thinner then that of the 5 friction set. Read the Kiggly page carefully and I think it mentions that so you may want to rethink the front set.
 
We used Hage-Kobany Transmission in Minneapolis to rebuild ours. They caught a lot of stressed parts (see our Build Thread) and replaced parts before they broke. They replaced all of the clutch packs, shift solenoids, and convertor. It shifts smooth, and consistently. They were very easy to deal with.

Sorry man, I am still slammed with work from the December-April time period, with a couple stragglers from earlier than that. The stupid COVID stuff screwed my schedule and the Mitsubishi parts supply chain screwed the rest of it.

I am working again on everything here, but I need every job that is here completed before I accept new jobs. I have been turning away customers for several months, it sucks, but it has to happen.

And I am located in Waukesha, WI.

As well, with the auto, I typically do full rebuilds. One thing to note if you are doing the shift kit, is that you will likely need to adjust the kickdown servo actuation range. Depending on the condition of the kickdown band, you may need to replace that too. Also, you will need a new pump gasket, pump o rings, pump bolt gaskets, oil pan gasket (if applicable), and a valvebody rebuild seal and o ring kit to replace the ones on the solenoids, and then a new OEM metal filter.

So as you can see, just doing those two things really adds more to the list to do/replace. I typically do comprehensive builds because it is my name on it. I am fine taking in the job when I am caught up, but I need time and peoples patience to do so.

Always has been the band and reverse servo, am I simply calling the wrong name John?

It's just totally inaccurate information. There is not a reverse band or a reverse servo in that transmission.

There is, however, what is known as a 'kickdown band' but transmission builders typically would call it a 2-4 band. Why?

Because it is on in 2nd and 4th, it has 0 to do with reverse, nor is there a part called a reverse band. Unless, of course, I'm incorrect
 
Ok John, I just always called it as that, as it goes around the reverse sunshell aka kickdown brake drum and is a kickdown band, and the servo is the kickdown servo.

My apologies. Didn't mean to cause a problem. I edited my original post.
