I am too, it would be amazing to be able to buy them new in box for $450. But it isn't looking too promising.

I am sure you guys see all the work that went into branding this turbo (holset or not), it is marked/cast "Holset" on every housing. If it is a counterfeit, it is a pretty good counterfeit LOL.

I dont really think I have a way to cleanly remove the giant snap ring and get it back on cleanly if this thing needs to be returned for a refund. I am sure we have something at work I could borrow, perks of working for a multi-billion dollar tool manufacturer...QUOTE]
Will, you can use a BIG pair of Channel Lock Pliers and that snap ring should come right out if you compress it, or they do on "Genuine" Holsets. I take mine out and put a small amount of RTV on the housing to seal them, per Justin.

Those specs you measured are correct for a hx40 TW. I'd probably say it's legit at this point but no guarantees unless it's taken apart

Really?? so they are supposed to be 76.2? or 76.3? 76.2 makes sense because its 3.0".

Either way, based on the seller's reaction, and now his willingness to pay for return shipping to get it back (and refund all my money) he must think it has some kind of real value. I feel like if it was a cheapo knock off they would refund my money and not bother paying another ~$120 to ship it back to China.

This has been super slow progress in determining anything. Part of me says send it back and get the refund, the other part wants to see all the internals. I just worry I will leave some kind of witness marks when I disassemble (and then refund it likely off the table.).

Tough call.. @lasthope05 - where did you find the spec, and how reliable is the source?

Thanks for your input guys. def open to suggestions now... run it or return it LOL

Interesting thought... To be perfectly honest I am having doubts that "Clinique" from Holset knows up from down. After sending the picture of the tag on the turbo, she replied "what model is the turbo?" so we aren't on the same page yet...

If it progresses into anything useful I will try to ask about that. I expect it is highly unlikely though. Large corporations with international subsidiaries often operate as individual entities. From my experience with our global subsidiaries at the corporation I work for, I expect Holset USA to tell me to contact Holset China for warranty concerns. :barf:

I am basically out of time and have to make a decision. I either need to send it back without digging any deeper, or close the dispute and eat the $450 if it turns out fake.

Its just money... how can I KNOW without question? Anybody?

Also I thought I should share that the seller is actually the owner of several online turbo "stores" - and they do also sell crappy HX40s that arent branded holset at all. The stores they own:
debo turbo - aliexpress
turboprince520 - ebay
xhcturbo - ebay
turboking - ebay

Just for reference*

I pulled apart my own spare hx40 and measured the wheel for you. I got 63.9x for exducer and 76.24 for inducer +/- .02".

Wow. Thanks Alan! That is awesome dude. Sincerely grateful. This has been a fascinating process. I think I might be running out of reasonable doubts and stuck on the less reasonable ones now. Perhaps my bias about China's general lack of respect for engineering IP has me still feeling like it could be fake - in spite of no actual indications so far that it is, indeed, fake.

I am not giving up! F it, lets see what the insides look like! Maybe I should buy a genuine CHRA from a known, authorized, USA based, Holset dealer. Then I could compare it part for part, and determine if everything is interchangeable... Thats basically doubling down (guessing at price of CHRA) and potentially still only having a fake turbo that is actually usable.

But if I prove it is real...

I am sure I have a few things in the garage that would get it out... I am just not confident that I could do it without leaving marks. To leave no trace I was thinking about doing a bit of rapid prototyping for "government work" in the labs at work. We have a pretty decent setup for prototyping tools... LOL

I am leaning towards eating it if its fake. $450 on a Chinese turbo wont break me - and my curiosity wont let me stop before I know...

And even so....run it. Just find out what you can first. :)

That just requires choosing which car gets it: auto or manual

And I am still struggling with that. Throwing a HX40 on a stock bottom end 7 bolt in the auto sounds like fun for a short time until the engine lets go... putting it on the 5 speed with the 2.3L sounds like fun for a short time until the "built" trans lets go. I really should build the 7 bolt or put the stroker in the auto...

Will, what do you think will give up on the auto? They are pretty stout little units. I don't have my shift kit in yet and mine barks gears. I am debating opening her up and putting it in but I've done 2 or 3 so its nothing. I run mine on lots of line pressure thru the ForcedFour box. I do have a feeling I should put the 175 shiftkit in as the tune is coming up and I'll be on E so I don't want to burn her up. I put the 5 pack 3rd gear Kiggly clutch kit in it and it is working very good. Just fyi. (And crossing fingers) OMG

Sorry, got off subject. Continue with the turbo choices.

I know how to drywall, want me come assist??? :p
Its a waiting game sometimes isn't it?

Drywall is definitely off topic. LOL Just wondering if anyone cares to comment on my proposed HX35 specs is a suitable choice for a fun hills and highway car? (See post 1)

Which turbine housing and manifold combination did you intend to use?

A gateless 12cm twin scroll, fed by a Morrison T3 divided manifold (might have to move the rad forward for that) with a 40mm external gate.

I run that exact setup on a 10:1 2.0L 6 bolt. I can't recommend it enough. I street drive my car to events and occasionally weekend cruising. The car is perfectly streetable with that setup. Here is my build log post about the dyno tuning. This includes the dyno sheet, log file, and an autocross run video.

I didn't need to move anything to fit this setup and I run a Mishimoto X-line (the thicker Mishimoto aluminum rad). But I am unsure of the clearence differences in a Galant.

I also say that is PERFECT. My son runs the Morrison twin scroll HX35 setup and it spools quick and is (well was) a super snappy car with lots of power. His is a 2.0 setup also but he has a stroker that he runs an HX40 on. Both cars are down currently sad to say.

Thanks guys. I know it's a little bench racey, but after doing my research I still like to post the plan and get a yep or no because....
I don't see any issue with asking what combo to run on a turbo, especially before committing to a ~$2500+ turbo setup. I think the Morrison Fab HX35 combo is fantastic. I'm sure you would too.

These look pretty legit still... lots of effort for a fake. But I measured the compressor wheel and its hx35 sized (54mm). Not the 60x86 the seller said it was.
Shit. Thoughts?
