I am asking for people who know these turbos to tell me if they think these are legit or not. I know lots of things get knocked off in china, but Holset geniunely does have mfg. plants over there. I don't know anything about Holsets, so I am not sure either way. Mostly seems too good to be true.

If this is a legit holset, the price seems pretty great... so naturally I am skeptical.

Please share your thoughts! Sorry for the (probably) dumb question!

If not legit, a nice copy?

I plan on going to an hx40, so this is appealing. I just need this sanity check before I drop $480 and find out it is a fake.

Hard to tell in the picture, but the surge protect cover doesn't look like it has machined reliefs for actual surge protection. It just looks like a flat surface.

Compare to this turbo labs picture of an HX40.

Edit: On a second look. I'd say it definitely does not have surge reliefs at all. It's just a flat surface where they should be. That means they never cut them out due to complexity, cost, or both. I'd steer clear.

That is a very valid point, something is not right there...

This pic is ALSO from Turbo Lab America - http://turbolabofamerica.com/hx40-67mm-billet-wheel-and-compressor-housing/

It seems to be the same housing on the Chinese turbo. Maybe I will shoot them an email and see what/why they are different..

At those prices, it's most likely fake. Brand new holset are $1000+. Also I wouldn't count on turbolab. They deal primarily with China suppliers.

As for the picture on AliExpress. That turbo has a silencer ring on it but you can still see the surge port milled at the compressor blades.

AliExpress is just China's version of eBay.

Looks like it just has the silencer ring installed maybe?

You are right. It does look similar.

The other thing to note here is the placement of thr boost source fitting. All of the other Holsets pictured have had it near the name plate. The one in the original post has it farther down the compressor cover. Meaningful? Maybe not. But definitely an inconsistency.

Nice catch, somehow I overlooked that many times! That certainly has me leaning towards knock-off...

Ok cool, that is the one I stumbled onto. I read pages 1, 2, and the last page. I need to devote some time to reading through it fully.

Thank you for the link! At least I know I am looking at the same thing you were referring to.

Yup.

Any time "Holset" is cast into the the center housing or compressor cover, you can assume it's Genuine.

I wonder if this still stands true... Justin is pretty knowledgeable.

I searched posts by him and see nothing since March 2019. Did he abandon the forums?

I actually took time to read through the ad. Given that it's probably just knockoff garbage, it's surprising how "genuine" all of stuff like the "Holset" casting on the exhaust housing, the compressor-side tag, and wastegate sticker all look. When I actually read the ad though, you can pretty much tell it's garbage. One day when I have a junker daily or something, I definitely want to buy one of these and test it out for shits.

Nm good call Kai, under brand it says "king turbo"

Junk! Damn
LOL Yeah their warranty also changes from one paragraph to the next. Was 6-months in one, then 12 in their store profile form or whatever. It's also never a great sign when they include attention-grabber words like "FOR FREE" when referring to stuff like turbo gaskets. Yeah I sure hope when I spend $500 USD on this junk that some turbo gaskets are included. The gaskets are probably the only decent thing that you get out of this deal, hard to f*** those up.
