Hello all! This seems like a great forum keeping DSMs alive!

A bit of an odd post here but... I'm looking for my old 1997 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder GST.

History
I sold it in Ottawa in 2006 and has passed through a few owners since but I lost track of it.
-Rebuilt title (theft recovery)
-Bought used in Milton ON in 2004 by me
-Greddy turbo timer
-Eibach springs
-TSW Thruxton wheels
-Right side convertible motor was weak
-Roof support bar needed to be manually positioned when going down

A few years ago someone said they thought they saw it in Ottawa driving around and someone had painted the wheels lime green.

Attached picture is of the exact car.

If you have it and are interested in selling or know about it please contact me. Even if it's not for sale I would like the owner to have my contact info for when they do decide to sell.

Thanks! :)

LoL! Loved that car, was my favourite! If I can't track it down then I want another just like it.

Well, the good news is that the issue you describe with the roof is not unique :D

It's actually interesting, my love affair for DSMs started out with a '97 Spyder GS-T with the busted center bar in the roof too (had to reach back and give it a push to align it when opening the roof!)

That car was short lived, due to loan issues with the dealership, but ignited my passion, and I've had a long-term goal to build a Spyder GSX now for years. Instead I have a garage full of hardtops. :D

Hah! That's the exact roof issue! It's too funny to finally hear someone else know exactly what I was trying to describe!

I know the hardtop is sportier, lighter, better all around but the Spyder was it for me

Another fun one was the water leaks on the corners of the windshield... I had a buddy that would take hard left turns in his GS when it was raining and dump a stream of water in his passenger's lap. :D

That being said, I too love the Spyder. My dream is still an AWD Spyder, and I have all the parts to build it just sitting right there in my garage... just need to find the Spyder. For me, it would be cool to find a non-turbo model so I can take the 2.4 and build a little 2.3 stroker with my current block and the 2.4 guts... But to be honest, I'm just happy to be reading about everybody working on their cars here while I wait patiently for my savings to grow into my projects ;)

You're lucky you live where you do and not somewhere up here where there is snow and cold (salted roads) for 5mths a year LOL!

Oh, I lived where it was snowy and cold for most of my youth, just at the snowline of the sierra foothills, about an hour and a half from Tahoe... fortunately, California uses sand instead of salt so there isn't as much of a rust problem... And not *nearly* as cold as it gets way up north ;)

Good to see some good old fashioned NOSTALGIA! Not many of these cars left on the road or in serviceable condition any more. Keep em clean and nice, before they're all gone!

I hope you find your old DSM!

A helpful hint I used one time to find my dad's old mustang was I used a Carfax report on the VIN and found a recent location it had been tagged/registered. Then I put up Craigslist and Facebook ads in that area asking if anyone had any info on it as well as a few forums. Got a message on Facebook not long after from the current owner. He was not willing to sell but I too left my info with him just in case. Never know right? Goodluck finding it man!

And yes, we all leave a part of out souls in these things. It is what makes everyone here so loyal though.

Holy crap! Thanks for the CARFAX suggestion! I ran the report ($45)

It was all registrations/renewals (no names/cities just provinces) and wasn't looking hopeful until the very last entry dated Nov 11th 2019 (3 months ago) and it went in for servicing. The record showed the name of the garage and what was serviced (Intake manifold gaskets replaced).

I've sent an email to the shop explaining I was looking for the car etc... and would offer a finders fee to them if the new owner contacts me.

It's something after all these years!

I received a reply from the shop that did the work a few months ago:
I can ask the customer , I know he really likes the car , but the used engine he bought for it was no good so he has it sitting in storage until he finds another engine.

Seems like the engine is done and it's sitting in storage...
The shop employee will be in contact with the new owner to let them know I'm asking about the car and I also have many photos and the story on how it was imported into Canada, etc...

I won't be hassling the owner to sell but would like for them to have my phone# just in case they decide to sell.

I haven't been this excited in a while. I found myself getting ahead of myself by browsing replacement carpets, mats, etc... had to stop and get my head in check.

Again... thanks so much Dusty Landrum for the CarFax suggestion.

Honestly at this point the current owner might be so upset with the car being out of order that he may just consider selling it back. The fact that you're the original owner could also make him think of it in a more positive way. Like they say, it never hurts to ask!

P.S I see you're from Ottawa! I'm actually going to Ottawa this Summer (hopefully) for some temporary work and I was toying with the idea of finding another Eagle or something, but after searching a little bit, it looks like there's close to no DSMs in the entirety of Ontario or even Canada :(

I just hope the owner contacts me so I can get on the radar.

A bit of back story: I had it for sale in 2005 for a ridiculous amount of money. No surprise it didn't sell and I was okay with it. One evening I'm out with a buddy (car is at home) and we're at the pub having a few. He says he wants to buy it and I tell him if he's serious then show up with the cash the next day.
I didn't think he'd remember but he did and he bought it.

I then bought a 350Z. Just wasn't the same. Was a nice car but I preferred the Spyder GST.

If you use Kijiji to search for Talon/Eclipse you will find a few. They are getting pretty hard to find sadly. People are moving on to newer stuff I guess. There's a black '99 Spyder GS (5spd) in Quebec for $2,600!

Wish you luck with getting the car back. Out of curiosity was it still in the Ottawa area or has it ended up farther away?

I was lucky enough to stumble across my old 98 Eclipse Spyder that I sold in 2008 a few years ago. Quickly bought it back and am happy I did, so I wish you luck!

Well the shop that did the work on it last November is 25 miles away from my home.

The last owner I was in contact with in 2007'ish lived in the same area so it's either the same guy or it went to a new owner in the same small town.

I've sent the owner from 2007 an email yesterday asking if he still had it. No replies yet so it could be an old email. I have his phone# as well so will give that a shot next. Doubt it's him though but maybe he knows who has it.

Hoping the shop really did try and contact the current owner as they said they would. I'm going to keep on them at least once a week and might even drop by in person.

I've also started to look around for new engines to see how easy it is to get one and how much. It might be more tempting for the current owner to contact me if they hear I have an engine for it.

Small update... An old friend of mine replied to my ad online where I posted on Kijiji (Canadian buy/sell marketplace) looking for info on my old Spyder.

He said he was actually browsing online looking for it as well LOL!

He actually went to school with the son of the owner of the shop it was in last November and will be contacting the son to see if he can find the Spyder's current owner contact info.

I'm also looking for a 4G63T engine just in case it's too damaged to rebuild. I won't buy an engine just yet. Montreal has JDM 4G63T engines for $2300 USD. They all have that Cyclone intake manifold which I hear takes some alterations to work with a 2G. May just go with a EVO3 or RVR intake manifold.
