My last two engines went due to oil pressure issues (bad oil pump and then a failed oil cooler line), so I'm not even cranking my new engine over until I get a proper gauge in place.

From what I've read I understand that installing a remote mount oil pressure sending unit kit is essential as engine vibration will kill most aftermarket sending units. My research led two questions unanswered, however:

  1. Does anyone run Japanese gauges?! If so, where do you get a remote oil pressure sending unit kit with BSPT threads? I picked up an OG Apexi EL Oil Pressure gauge to match the EGT and Boost gauges I installed in my car 17-odd years ago. The pressure sending unit that came with the gauge has 1/8 BSPT threads that would nicely thread into the OFH. However, all of the remote oil pressure sending unit kits (such as this: https://jnztuning.com/product/jnz-remote-oil-pressure-sending-unit-kit/?attribute_pa_fittings=both-2 - and every other one I can find) transition to 1/8 NPT. Does anyone know of a 1/8 BSPT to 1/8 BSPT kit, or a place to buy BSPT fittings? I suppose worst case I could buy a 1/8 NPT Male to 1/8 BSPT Female fitting to put at the end of the JNZ/Extreme PSI kits, but it seems silly that there isn't a straight BSPT option available.

  2. Is there any benefit to maintaining the OEM oil pressure gauge? Can it be logged with ECMlink, etc.? I was looking at installing something similar to this https://www.dsmtuners.com/threads/using-a-t-to-install-an-oil-pressure-gauge.359004/ (but with all BSPT fittings). However, I'm not sure if the risk of all of the additional fittings is worth the reward if the factory gauge is completely worthless.

Crack open the filtered side allen head plug on the OFH (that may require removal and heat) then put a BSPT to AN fitting in that spot and run a FLEXIBLE BRAIDED LINE to any spot you like. It takes all of the vibration and breaking off sensors out of the picture. We've been there so this is from actual experience. :thumb:
 
I just use a cheap transducer to log oil pressure through ECMLink. Cannot find one in BSPT though.

I searched for BSPT to NPT single adapter options and found limited access and poor quality. One that I tried was so bad I didnt use it.

So I eventually settled for rather bulky adapter that threaded into the OFH with BSPT threads, then offers 2 outputs, one BSPT/ one NPT. One port for the stock sensor, one port for my logging sensor.

McMaster-Carr would be a decent bet for British Standard Pipe fittings.


I couldn't find anything useful in BSPT at McMaster when I was searching about a year ago. I was surprised by this, they have been my go to for about a decade and never disappoint. They also have the fastest shipping I have ever known.

I can place a hardware order at 3pm and the order will be at my shop the next morning.

I'm mostly interested in the 2nd part of your 2nd part. Since nobody has answered already, I take it as a no.

What transducer are you guys using to log with link?
 
STM has the fitting, then get a -4AN Tee and feed the turbo with one side and put a braided line on the other side and put your oil pressure sender on that!

My OFH fitting is a 90* but the STM straight fitting works just a good, pick your choice.

My braided line runs UNDER the front of my oil pan towards the firewall and is held in place with a couple of "d" clamps and the sender is on the end. The other end feeds the turbo.....Oh hell, I am driving the car today, I will go snap a couple pics if I have time! :thumb:

That is exactly the poor quality fitting i tried...........but i did not get it from them.

The bulky adapter came from an Ebay vendor.....JAT Motorsports I think it was.

I like that -4 setup ^

They come in different ranges and can be used to log whatever you want. Just make sure you choose the appropriate range for what you want to log. They can be found even cheaper on ebay.

I am currently running a mechanical guage while breaking in and tuning so I KNOW for sure what the oil pressure is, but my sending unit for my electric gauge screws right on to the end of my line. I feed my Holset with this line, so I know what the pressure is at the turbo also.

Thank you for the pics. I pieced together this option but still ended up with more fittings than I wanted due to having to go from BSPT to AN and then back to BSPT. Also on my 90 OFH my oil-feed line faces straight down and towards the front of the car. I wasn't comfortable with a tee and additional fittings making this hang further down than it already does.

In my exhaustive search I actually came up with a steel 1/8 BSPT tee on eBay. Then on clearance at Pegasus Racing I found a "600 Stainless Hose, 1/8 BSP Male-1/8 BSP Female Str., 36"". With the two of these I should be able to tee off the pressure sender side of the housing so that I am feeding the OEM pressure sender (directly off the tee) and my aftermarket pressure sender (off the 36" stainless hose) off this single port.

When the parts come in and I fab it up, I'll snap a pic of the final results.

Yes we learned NOT to ever hang anything off of the OFH. We had a brass fitting just like the one in your picture break off during driving. You know how these motors tend to vibrate and that's all it took. Glad you have a steel one, but we just plain quit hanging anything off of them. Luckily, my son was right as the Oriellys when the thing busted off.
 
Don't even bother with the stock oil press sending unit. IF you're going to log pressure, log fuel pressure. That's more useful.

Your Oil press gauge has a warning light: use it.

I understand the stock oil pressure sending unit is fairly worthless. However, as it looked like I needed a fitting at the OFH anyway to get from BSPT to a remote oil pressure sending unit kit (and then back to BSPT for my aftermarket sensor), I figured I might as well use a tee to keep the OEM gauge active. At least it will give me another point of reference if I suspect that the aftermarket gauge is starting to act odd.

Not sure if I agree that fuel pressure is more useful, at least for my application. I'm building a road-race car, and when I'm on the track my eyes are typically looking well ahead and not at my guages. For me at least, it would be of value to look at a log after a run and see if oil pressure fluctuates through any long sweepers. From my experience, if I have a good AFPR and a re-wired and adequate-sized fuel pump and I'm well within the pumps curve, I don't have anything to worry about there.

I see the pic but I don't see any fuel/pressure sensor setup. Of the 4 views 3 are probably me going back to the pic to make sure I didn't miss anything. ;)

In road racing with an AWD car, I'm at WOT a lot. It is dedinitely course dependent, but I'd say on a 60-sec lap I'm at WOT for maybe 20%, which would mean I'm at WOT per-lap for the same amount of time a drag car is per pass. But of course I'll do a lot more laps in a day then I drag car will do passes.

Again, as long as I'm safely within the fuel pumps pressure/flow curve I'm not so concerned about fluctuating fuel pressure. I will be installing a mechancial gauge with my FPR, and I can keep an eye on that while tuning and on the duno, or even just shove a go-pro under the hood and look at it under a few WOT pulls on the street. Otherwise my wideband will tell me if I'm suddenly running lean, and if so I can further investigate if it is fuel pressure or something else.

As noted in my first post I'm running an Apexi (Japanese) pressure gauge, and indeed it is 1/8 BSPT. You would think a Japanese gauge on a Japanese car (well, Japanese engine) would be pretty straight-forward but it looks like everyone runs US made gauges with NPT threads so all of the kits go from BSPT -> AN -> NPT.
 
I don't want to clutter this thread, but logging fuel pressure came up and this is what I am doing for that. I also drag race and need constant fuel pressure. This setup i going on my 92 6/4 auto car.

I totally read your post wrong. I haven't found a female BSPT. What I was showing you is where I had my tee and that my sending unit was remote amounted. Below is a 1/8 NPT tee, not sure how he managed to screw in the stock sending unit, but he did it. I still recommend remote mounting that tee and not off the OFH. But that's me
