Maybe you can give me an opinion about a couple things. Rear differential upgrade / rebuild, and some kind of upgraded rear axles.
Have you ever felt the need for those 2 items? I get some booming sound on trailing throttle - trailing off from cruise at 40-50 mph speeds. Does that mean rear diff shims or bearings or something like that?

I upgraded the Galant with a DSM 4 bolt rear end. The stock 4 bolt axles are pretty stout, and should hold up well under 500whp. My drivetrain isn't terribly quiet with the aluminum driveshaft and welded differential, but I've inspected everything at length to ensure there's not an actual problem. If I were you, I'd do the same. From experience, I've found that sometimes the drivetrain noise is just a byproduct of a modified car. You can add bushings, check your driveline angles and do some other odds and ends to quiet it down, but I've never successfully gotten rid of the noise completely. For example, my car loves to get the wub wubs just slightly off-throttle on decel around 70mph. I gave up caring about fixing it after spending hours under the car and doing unsuccessful road tests. The shit doesn't break, so I'm just going to send it until something rears its head. So far, after thousands of miles (many of them not nice) the car hasn't had any issues.

Come to think of it, the only DSM I've ever been in that had a quiet driveline was my 90' GST ROFL

Ahh, "the wub wubs just slightly off-throttle on decel around 70mph". That's probably the same sound I'm talking about. It kind of resonates in the body of the car so it sounds "bigger" than it probably actually is.
I was surprised at how hard it was to find a good unbroken transmission to start from, for a rebuild / upgrade on that.
The "used" trans I bought in April from that yard in Ohio turned out to be complete trash, except for the bellhousing, which was a bit lucky because the good trans I found is a JDM unit from a 1992 3000GT which has a completely different bellhousing.
At least with the transmission you can still buy new gears for it.
I don't think you can buy new ring and pinion gears for the rear differential, can you?

I'd bet your noise is the rear diff being out of spec (shims etc). I'm current rebuilding my spare diff with an evo8 clutch differential.

That's what I'm thinking too. Shims, backlash, something like that. Because in the FSM on page 3-8 it says "If the vehicle vibrates and produces a booming sound due to an imbalance of the driving system, measure the rear axle total backlash by the following procedures .... "

Then searching the entire pdf for the word "booming", that's the only instance of it.

On page 3-6 it says "Gear noise while coasting - Improper drive pinion preload adjustment or Damaged gear".

Do you get that booming or wub wub noise from your car?

Yeah, I unfortunately do. My backlash is like double the max allowed.

Ever since the @Wheelwell feature, the car seems to be popping up everywhere.

Larry Chen published his Autofocus episode on the car a few weeks ago:

Then, shortly after the Wheelwell shoot with Larry, I got another opportunity to work with Super Street when they invited me to bring the car out and compete in the 2019 Showcar Shootout. I'm not going to rehash everything again here in the build thread, but if you're interested in how the competition went, you can check out all the details here: https://www.dsmtuners.com/threads/1837-competing-in-the-super-street-show-car-shootout-iv.523974/

Even after a proper flogging at the track, the car is still running great. No issues to report, and no wrenching required. I've done some little stuff like fix a small exhaust leak and install my Gamble Garage aluminum coolant reservoir. I also revamped the rear trunk area with new coverings and a custom sub woffer box. I'll throw some pictures up of that when I get a chance.

Other than that, the car gets driven a few times a month and chills out in the garage. The best thing I've ever done was stop trying to make more power. Wrenching on this thing all the time is for the f***in birds ROFL

Streets of Willow, awesome!
How many laps did they let you do there?

Your mention of the subwoofer in a situation where you'd like to have light weight got me all rewound on a super rigid lightweight material that I used once to reduce the weight of a speaker cabinet. So thanks for the rewind LOL. Glass micro bubbles mixed into epoxy. But there are other ways that are easier, cheaper, and don't require protection from the microspheres which are so light that they float around in the air like dust. Anyway, for anybody interested, there's a good short read about it on Aircraft Spruce and Specialty here. I used basically what they call "wet micro".

Transponder counted 24 laps, which was almost 10 more than any of the other competitors that day. Who says DSMs aren't reliable?

I took the opposite approach, almost completely. The box is just made of plywood, and is probably as heavy as it can possibly be for its size

There's literally nothing light about my Galant. One thing I've stayed consistent on while building the car is being dead set on keeping the creature comforts that not only make it a true street car, but also somewhat comfortable and enjoyable to drive. With that, I've regrettably given almost no consideration to weight savings.

If the track day at Streets of Willow opened my eyes to one thing, it was that the car has tons of potential that hasn't even been tapped. Just with some weight reduction alone, I could probably shave a second or maybe two off my lap times. A/C, sound system, heating system, remaining 4WS parts, interior, wiring, etc, etc...There's got to be hundreds of pounds that could be shaved off the car's weight. Pair that with a corner balance, better tuned suspension, slicks, wider wheels, and the Galant might be a force to be reckoned with at something other than getting groceries.

But, then I'd have a track car, not a street car :hmm:

I think 24 laps is really good, even if a few were pretty easy going!

My car is full weight too except that I took off the AC, and that is just because of where I live. There's about the least need for AC here of anyplace in the lower 48 states.

I've always thought that the 4g63 should be capable of reliable running on a road course and lasting a long time as race cars go, as long as it is stock stroke, and the boost is kept reasonable, and everything else is good - for example no oil starvation during corners, etc.
Seems like the car itself should be good too, suspension and so-forth.
I don't understand the different track configurations at Willow, but just looking at a bunch of track times posted in various cars by pro drivers like Randy Pobst and Steve Millen, your time doesn't look bad at all. For example Roger Yasukawa (a pro race driver) posted a 1:31.40 in a Lancer Evolution X SE, on the "1.5 mile configuration" of the track.
I like the way my car handles. If I get on the gas too much in a corner, it just kind of drifts, rather than totally losing the rear or the front end.
I think the worst behavior I've noticed happens in a straight line, during the transition from squat to dive, when I transition from hard acceleration to jump on the brakes. It goes from wanting to veer left (during accel) to wanting to dive right (when hitting the brakes). I don't know what causes that and wonder if people have it all figured out how to cure that.
I think having the propeller shaft perfectly balanced would be important too, and I'm not so sure mine is.

In The News did an awesome job on a custom plaque I had made capturing the Super Street feature on the Galant.
.
This little space on the wall is a constant reminder of all the time, money and energy spent in the garage. But more importantly, it represents the work and efforts of those who have become a part of the build over the years. You people are the parts that can't be bought, or replaced. You are the most valuable parts of the build, and mean more than any sum of nuts and bolts combined.

It's better sweet getting the Super Street feature. I learned just recently Super Street was ending their print magazine. December 2019 would be the last issue to hit newsstands, so I'm extremely grateful to have been a part of the magazine before the end of its tenure.

At the end of the day, it's awesome to reflect back and think about all the awesome people I've met and the friendships I've gained through building the car, and car interests. Many of those started here on the forums, so I never this place for granted :)

I actually did a bit of wrenching on the car for the first time in quite a while. The clutch on the car has never been very cooperative. In hopes of getting the QM to be a bit more tame on the street, I changed up some of the hydraulics on the system.

I went from a "green" slave (which has a 13/16" slave piston) to a "red/gold" slave (which has a 3/4" slave piston). The idea being, I get a bit more travel at the slave, which makes the clutch release a bit more effectively. I went ahead and installed a new clutch master cylinder as well, just to make sure there were no hidden issues there.

I checked the clutch fork position in the trans window by removing the boot. I just wanted to verify nothing crazy had changed since installation. It looked good as well, so I installed the new hydraulic components, and bled the system.

Once I had the car out on the street, I could immediately feel a difference. Nothing drastic, but the twin disc was a bit more tame...And if you've ever owned a twin, than you know anything helps.

In other news, my wife got me a dope ass custom cut gold Cover Craft sunshade for Xmas. The car never sits outside, but when it does, that old ass 90's dashboard gonna be protected.

Rolled 169,000 miles on the chassis over Xmas, which is picture worthy :sneaky:

Lastly, I finally got around to refinishing the trunk area. I rebuilt the custom subwoffer box, and put in a custom floor panel. It turned out nice and tidy, just as I hoped it would.

Glad you were in the last super street issue I have it in my collection a few dsms have made it in the issues . Ds port now has a few more builds but mo your galant is one of the rarest one out there.

I knocked out a few little projects on the Galant over the lest few months. I started by replacing all the turbo coolant lines with stainless braided lines. I added DEI fire sleeves to hopefully extend the life of the lines since they see so much heat due to the proximity to the turbine housing.

My battery shit out. The car usually sits for long periods of time, and I never remember to put it on the tender. I think age and the lack of use took their toll finally, so I just picked up a new Optima red top. I remember back in the day when you could pick one of these things up on sale for $119 bucks, these shits are expensive now!

In a last-ditch effort to make my QM twin more tame and streetable, I decided to add the 2G clutch accumulator everyone always suggests. All said and done, it made a tiny improvement, but overall the clutch still sucks ass to drive on the street. I think I can chalk it up and say there's nothing I can do to make this thing anymore enjoyable to drive when I'm not balls out banging through the gears...She's just never gonna be a lady in the streets.

Found what were probably some of the last Super Street hard copies left on the shelf in the San Francisco airport while I was flying on business. It was cool I found a few of the older issues featuring the Galant, but also sad knowing these copies would be some of the last ever to be seen on the newsstands.

I'm just lazy these days. Wrenching on the car has become more of a chore as of late, so I was in and out.

Catching up from the last few months:

I replaced the stock fuel feed line with a -6 AN. New fittings and all that jazz
