hello my name is wayne,
i'm a new member and was looking at your thread on noises. i have a 1993 Eagle Talon ES, i started noticing a scraping sound coming from the 5 speed about 6 months or so ago and it has been getting progressively worse, it is bad enough it will draw attention while driving at this point, i have also noticed that from time to time it will be tough to put it in gear 3rd mostly. the clutch slave cylinder went bad recently and i replaced it and the axles(they needed it) the throwout bearing is making a bit of noise and the clutch is also slipping in the higher gears while pulling hills. i have bought a new clutch pressure plate and throw out bearing. the grinding sound is only evident when accelerating and decelerating no noise while driving in gear while there is no pressure on the drive train. it would be Great if it was just a throwout bearing but my spidey senses tell me it is a deeper problem. no noise while coasting or if the clutch is depressed, i would like to get as much info as i can before i pull it down i was thinking hard on buying a trany rebuild kit before hand, bearings and synchros at the tune of 300+ bucks i am on a fixed income and this kind of cash is not an easy jump looking for a bit of wisdom in the matter any advice. Thank you in advance

But did you replace the actual clutch plate?
Was wondering the same thing. Was it a complete clutch kit or just the pressure plate that went in? What's the clutch pedal play like? Was the pivot ball replaced with the clutch?

When you say no noise when coasting, does that mean when out of gear? You did say you hear it on acceleration and deceleration so I'm guessing that probably means coasting in gear.

I'm not great at diagnosing this sort of thing but I figured maybe these questions could help some of the others here offer up some ideas.

BLACK'98DSM, no i haven't like i said it is my main transportation and i want to gather as much info as i can before i tear into it i don't want to do this twice nor do i want to spend a bunch of money if i don't need to

thank you both for your inquiries, didn't mean to be unclear, as i mentioned in the post i have bought a clutch set, (pressure plate, clutch disk, and throw out bearing). and no i have not pulled the transmission and replaced anything at this point. in response to the noise while coasting, no noise while coasting (out of gear) and no noise while (in gear) with a no (torque) situation applied to the drivetrain Meaning neither accelerating or decelerating, and after putting in the new slave cylinder and bleeding the system it had plenty of pedal but after driving it for a month or so it does(just recently) act like there might be air in the system but this only appeared after the clutch slippage had made itself apparent i chalked it up to the wear on the clutch, may be the pivot ball is wearing out that would shed light on the shift problem that i had once or twice can't be sure till i pull it out and thank you for the heads up on that. and thank you again hope that helped. unfortunately this is my first DSM and i have found very little information to help me on line, and the pedal is weak operates on the bottom third of the pedal at this point

That's good, do let us know.

Have you looked at the fluid? I would drain some into a pan and examine it for particles to indicate wear inside the transmission. At least it would give you some information on its health. Wish you the best of luck and glad to have you here on the forum Wayne!

Oh and you said you replaced the slave cylinder but how about the master cylinder? Check your clutch fluid level.
