1st and foremost I want to apologize if I'm posting this in the wrong section, but I do feel this will be the best area.

2nd I've been searching for days and couldn't really find any more info then what I'm about to post.

So I'm in the process of trying to modernize & semi restore my 1GA GSX. When I first purchased the car I was told it had a "stock freshly rebuilt" tranny & unfortunately 1st & 2nd gear grinds... that's not the issue as I plan to rebuild the transmission, but more so the shifter is sloppy. It is a 1990 & from what i've read on we have a different shifter assembly as well as different length cables (correct me if I'm wrong..) This brings me to the concerns I want to share.

I see only MachV motorsports as off right now sell the bushings needed to restore that feel in the "1990" shifter, RTM supposedly will be up and running soon. What I really wanted to know is that instead of spending $60 for these bushings is there any other shifter options that we can use ? I plan on driving this car in as many events as I can, (autoX, road course, drag, etc) so I know the driving will be hard.

I've seen one guy retrofitting what he says to be an EVO 9 shifter box into a evo converted mirage. I've asked what needed & his response was "I didn't like the way the stock assembly felt after I did the rebuild kit so I looked into a this. The newer shifter is a lot smoother since the pivot point is on a ball vs a tensioned spring. Another bonus was that it moved the shifter back towards me and i didn't feel like I was reaching for a shift. The best part is I shift into 3rd gear without punching my drink in my cup holder."

Has anyone tried putting an EVO 8/9 5spd shfiter in our cars ?

I've also found a thread dealing with an EVO 1 putting an EVO 4 shifter in his car. He shows pics of what he had to do in order to fit. I'm thinking since evo 1-3 share the same transmission mount way maybe it's just a matter of swapping cables & shifter box mount position ?

Now if we can somehow get all this information right I think that will give us plenty of options such as these below

CAE Shifter:

IRP Shifter:

I know these are a bit pricey options where we can put that money into something else, but I feel the investment is worth the price. From the review i've read of these shifters, people have loved the feel and to me besides the feel, both shifters are closer to the steering wheel which is an advantage in autox & road course.

I also feel an OEM Evo 8/9 5spd shifter is that much of an upgrade & a lottttt cheaper. At the end of the day I think this will be somewhat of a game changer as parts for our cars are slowly fading

I bought an EBAY 1g short shifter, modded it to fit and then made all my own metal bushings to remove all slop at the shift base, time consuming...but it the most solid feeling shifting 1g alive....guaranteed.

Nothing really against that option since I haven't tested it myself, but I like to keep things oem or high quality aftermarket

After doing that mod it was one of those where I was like, man I wish I would have done this like 20 years ago mods. I was stunned that DSM could feel so stable shifting. OEM is garbage compared with what I have and there is no quality aftermarket. I do want to correct one thing, I did use OEM bushings at the part where the lever the goes forward and back, it was the way it was machined so I kinda had to.

I can't lie that does look like a solution, If I end up abandoning the ideas, i'll keep this in mind

I have a short shifter that is made by jnz tuning out of a dodge stealth shifter.. I guess they're still available to be made but you have to provide the stealth/3kgt shifter yourself. (last I heard, I haven't worried about this since I did the mod a few years ago) I'm not sure if it's still available but it might be something to look into. Also @bastarddsm makes a bushing kit that goes under that hood that works wonders, I don't have firsthand experience with it yet but I have heard very good things, it's on the list for this winter.

Another one to keep in the books. I might budge & Buy an evo8/9 shifter for a winter project.
