2G New rear rotors too small

So it’s 3 in the morning and I’m changing the rotors and pads on my Talon and I’m going to attach a picture of the new and old rotor. I got a kit for AWD but the new rotor is small. Do I run it? Can I run it? What’s the deal
 
I can't see from the picture, but is your old rotor thicker and ventilated? If so, and judging by your Talon being 1995, it could be the rare '1994' big rear brakes edition (reference this thread http://www.dsmtuners.com/threads/early-95-rear-brake-thread-discussion-pn.469725/ ).

If that IS the case, then you can't really run the new (smaller) disc, because the pads wont make full contact and you'll go through them quicker and it's just not gonna be a good setup. Also there is a difference in how far out the caliper sits. Just return the disc and look for the 284mm (20mm thickness) disc, part numbers are listed in that thread.

No problem! I was actually reading about this a few days ago so the info came in useful here. Just keep in mind the brake pads are also bigger (taller) so you'll have to get those as well. Use the other thread for reference numbers and make sure to order the 284mm disc. I'm not sure which stores in the US have those but maybe you'll get lucky. Personally I'm trying to find the rear calipers so I can make that upgrade as well!
 
From all the research I've done the vented rears were only used briefly because they throw off the brake bias. I can't remember the reasons but when I upgraded my single piston fronts to dual piston gsx calipers I was going to get the 94/95 rears but that combo apparently sucks ass. At the time the rears could be found on rock auto for about $20/caliper.
Edit: I just realized Wes393 says the same thing in his thread, yet it's funny how many people responded with plans to do the swap.

I would ditch the vented rears; sell them to someone who wants to try em. Get the regular single pistons for the rears. Calipers can be found from $20-40 and rotors $10-20 on rock auto.

Technically yes, it would definitely f*** up the brake bias. On most cars it's about 70-75% front brake and 25-30% rear bias. On an early stock '95 2G, you'll end up having a bigger disk in the rear (284mm) and a smaller disk up front (276mm).

However, this upgrade would be very good if you've already upgraded front brakes to either 3kGT 4 pot calipers or Brembos. Pair that with a brake master cylinder from a 3G, and you'll have all the stopping power you'll ever need for daily use and the occasional drag run or maybe even autocross.
 
Just because the rotor is slightly bigger than the front doesn't mean that you have more braking force than the front. The pistons on the rear caliper with the early 95 rear brakes are still much smaller in area than the dual piston GSX front calipers. So for the same brake pressure the clamping force is significantly higher on the front as it should be.

If the bias was shifted so far off that it made the car swap ends on lock up then that is a significant safety risk. There would have been a recall for these and they would not make replacement parts.

I have the early 95 rear brakes on my car and would never downgrade to the standard non vented setup. I have no problem with the bias either. With dual piston front calipers it still locks up the front before the rear.

I believe that they went to the solid rear rotors as a cost saving measure. Even though the smaller non vented rotors are only cents less in cost to them over the vented ones, that is quite a bit of money multiplied by thousands of cars. And I think they deemed them not necessary.

The reason I keep them is that for racing, the heat capacity of the vented rotor is far in excess of the solid rotor. Due to their low production numbers though it can be difficult finding replacement rotors though.

Pads and calipers are pretty easy to come by as they are the same as the second generation 3000gt VR4 rear calipers.

So to anyone with the early 95 rear brakes its up to you to make a decision to keep them based on these availability problems. But why downgrade your rear brakes when you don't have too?

I've been looking around for some rotors for a little while now. I suppose this means I'll have to look a little harder? I've seen some information about 4G rear rotors working and other information about certain years of VR4 rear rotors working, but I haven't been able to verify through my searching.

The VR4 rotors are the right diameter and thickness but not the proper offset. Same for the 4G. Unfortunately the vented rear rotors for the eclipse that work with the original brackets and calipers are a one off.

You have to look harder but your can find them. If you don't mind standard non drilled or slotted rotors then rock auto has them for $24.79 a piece. Look halfway down the page Centric 121.46068 are the right ones.

If you want drilled and slotted you will have to look much harder or send a couple of the plain ones out to be done.

That kit will be solid rear rotors. If you notice it says 1995-up Talon AWD and 1994-up Talon FWD even though its a 2G kit. The vented rear rotors only came on AWD cars produced from 1/94 - 10/94. So any of the kits you find out there will not have them.

Saw this come up, I remember posting about it. I ended up finding rear calipers from a 1997-2003 Galant VR-4, which use the 284mm vented disc. I bought new vented 284mm discs using part numbers for the Galant along with the taller pads, and everything was a complete bolt on. I know you guys don't have the VR-4 8th gen over in the States, but I believe the 3000GT rear discs on the turbo models are the exact same. Otherwise if anyone from Europe is looking, get the VR-4 rear calipers and discs! (check my profile for pics).

What are you looking for again? I got my rotors and pads from Oreillys. I believe I MIGHT have some extra calipers for the rear. Pulled off a yard dog years ago. They will be in my storage unit. PM me if interested.

I was after those too, but there's only one left! I might have to try going to an auto parts store to see what they can do .
