First off, I've got a left rear that's locking up. Oddly the caliper seems OK when hanging loose. Piston pushes in easily enough it seems. However, if I slip it over the pads and press the brakes it locks solid. One suggestion was a problem with the brake line swelling (I have SS Braided lines, which are fairly old), but I had no problem pushing fluid back with the piston... So I'm thinking the caliper piston is sticking enough to not release easily, but not enough for me to feel significant extra pressure when pushing it in.

So, researching replacement parts I can't find even such simple things as rotors for the rear of this car anymore... However, the post 11/94 2g parts are still readily available. If I can't find the correct parts for the original vented rear rotor setup, what all do I need to convert to the later spec (solid rotor) brakes? Is it as simple as rotors, brackets, calipers, and pads? Or is it more involved (I would really like to keep my parking brake...)?

OP's question: yes it's as easy as swapping rotors, calipers, brackets, and pads if you'd like to do that.

How much smaller?
By about an inch. 265mm vs 284mm or something close to that which comes out to about 10.4" vs 11.2". Also the early 95 rotors were lot thicker since theyre vented which is nice for heat absorption. Good pair up with Outlander brake upgrade.

I looked for a long time but I did end up finding powdercoated and slotted replacement rotors for my early 95 brakes. The calipers have larger pistons than the later brakes as well.

If you have one that is sticking just take the piston out and clean up the bore it probably has some corrosion. Then get a 1.5" bore caliper seal kit from Dorman part number D352116. Just did both of my calipers when I powdercoated them.

Don't downgrade to the newer brakes. The vented 95's are a ton bigger. Funny thing is that they are actually larger in diameter than the OE front rotors. They are 284mm where the fronts are 276mm. Also as others have said they are signigicantly thicker than the newer rears at 20mm vs. 10mm with venting.

Heres mine:

I need to master this embed stuff.

Make sure you are lubing up everything that is metal on metal contact. If there is debris, clean it. Take your time. it is worth it.

Brake lubricant where needed. ALL BRAKE PARTS.

Anti seize where you can.

Have brake cleaner.

I had to put brake lube on the back of my pads on the passenger rear side. The caliper was hanging. Put some heat on that one, but i bedded them & they all look identical after some passes.

Thanks for all the info!

This caliper is not salvageable, the piston is rusted/pitted beyond reuse/rebuild. I hunted around for a few hours and only found 1 place that had the part listed as in stock (showed they had 4 left). Placed the order last night and then today got an alert that their inventory was wrong and they don't have any at all. Looks like I'm going to have to convert to the "from 11/94" parts now. There just aren't any "to 11/94" parts left anywhere. Too bad, I always liked having the big vented rears, but I primarily operate it on traction limited surfaces anyways so a loss in braking power isn't that big a deal.

Mostly annoyed that I'm dealing with this a second time this year. Just a few months ago I had to convert my MR2 from dual piston fronts to single piston fronts due to parts availability problems...

Would have to be a serious amount of rust for the casting to no longer be usable. Scratch hone, new seals, and a new piston from the parts store would probably make it good to go. But I get it its a lot of work over getting reman ones.

Currently Rock Auto shows a rear right in stock for early 95. Just search part number 18B4667

I know you need a left but the right will fit the other side just swap the pins so the rubber tipped one is toward the front of the car. The bleeder will be pointing forward instead of up but that really isn't that big of a deal.

Also just for your info the non-fixed 3000gt VR4 rear calipers are exactly the same with one exception. They have a angled port for the brake hose where the early 95 DSM ones go straight in. So they would work with just a slightly longer brake hose to allow for that. 3000GT caliper for reference. Compare to above you will see the 45 degree hose port I am talking about.

More great info, thanks!

I've got longer brake hoses already (an old Buschur kit), so that 3000GT part might have worked for me... RockAuto's inventory is the one that failed me. If you order those parts expect a phone call the next day saying they don't actually have it... :-/ I've already got a complete 11/94+ set on order now though (well, assuming the inventory numbers are right on that product). I chased around a bit looking for rebuild parts, but that seemed to be a dead end too.

I'm trying to stay as close to stock as I can to make life easier for emergency repairs if I have to get a shop involved, but I'm VERY glad to know about all the options moving forward! I'd like to keep this car as long as I can, but I only have so much time and money (and rust repairs eat a LOT of money with shops as I can't weld my way out of paper bag)...
