I have finally decided to do something better with my transmission. I called up Jon at T.R.E to talk options. Immediately he told me that I called at the right time because he had be in the process of working with PAR Engineering on a customized gear box that's synchronized and have the same strength as a set of dog box gears. He told me that He and Par Engineering had reengineered some things to make the gearbox almost perfect. So I agreed to gather all of what he needed for the build and finally we have a completed unit that will be put to the test here shortly. As recommended by T.R.E I switched back from the 3.909 final drive to the stock dsm 3.545 final drive which we feel is better especially for 1/2 mile racing. Of course Jon , after getting the gear set from par did all the usual to the gears that's standard on any of his transmission builds.

Shot peen , Gear details, double sychros, and all the other secrets. The only thing I wish I had done is some type of billet shift fork but with the 3.545 rear end I have no plans of slamming the gears and shifting above 9000 rpm. I am very excited about the new unit and really thank T.R.E for undertaking the build for me. On a side note before hiring Jon I was a little concerned about being able to communicate with him because he no longer accept phone calls but I must say that concern went away almost immediately because after getting my transmission Jon kept me up to speed by texting me pictures throughout the build process this eliminated any need for me to call and get a status on how its going. I must say I am very pleased. the only thing I have to get now is , since the gear set uses the bigger Evo input shaft, my current clutch disc needs to be replaced, not the whole clutch but the disc with the bigger splined center.

gear ratios are as follows. Nice even spead!

It's gorgeous, and it's what DSMers need, but I have to ask- same price as their dogbox gear kit?

No. the dogbox set is almost 2000.00 more than the synchro set. I was thinking about getting the gearset and install them myself but was advised against it for warranty purposes and other minor technical issues I had no problem with the advisement LOL. As far as posting the total I paid I don't know if T.R.E gave me some deal or what but contact them I feel comfortable in Jon giving out that info. But I am please with what I was charged.

So just to be clear, it's NOT this kit?
http://www.par-engineering.com/prod...ion-13-1st4th-synchromesh-engagement-gearset/

That one was known to have some reliability issues in the past (though they all do).

Cost seems to be around $4,000 for the 1-4 kit?

Edit: can you elaborate on the input shaft? DSM clutches work on Evo 1-3s, why would you need a different clutch disk?
Okay as far as the shaft I have to check on exactly what I was told. Yes its this set that is why T.R.E teamed up with par to address those issues. Jon worked with par and helped redesigned a few things to his liking par made the adjustments base on Jon's recommendations. In speaking with jon he was happy with the set after some issues where addressed. It appears the price increased on their site from the first time I looked at purchasing them. When I first tried to buy the set from par he told me to contact T.R.E because they had partnered up with Jon and that he had put in a lot of time addressing the previous issues with the gears. T.R.E on board I am pretty sure its all good now!

Very cool. The input shaft was a weak point on the old set, it's possible they've gone to a thicker shaft that will need a custom clutch disk.

Great to see more options considering the constant discontinuation of parts for our platform.

Agreed. Things will only get harder to find, so having TRE and others step up now to provide these solutions is great for us DSMrs.

Keltalon, im interested in how these gears perform on the street.

Yes bigger shaft requiring different clutch disc.

Since Magnus and Boostin already came up with aftermarket transfer case gears (hella expensive but an option nonetheless)... Now we need a solution for our rear diffs, in case you guys didn't know if the ring and pinion ever get damaged we're SOL since OEM replacements are no longer available.

As far as these transmission gears, whether they're street friendly or not I'll probably get them. I'm building my car to last and drive. I'd love to still have it running 20-30 years from now.

I can't believe they go through all this and still stick us with a garbage center diff.

And first gear is waaaay to tall if your going to drag race.
I am a 1/2 mike racer myself.

I prefer time attack/trials.

The goal is to build a street car that focuses on handling and mid-range power, but that can run 10s in the 1/4 mile and lay down decent numbers on a road course.

I assume the center diff is a 4-spider? I also find it a bit frustrating that they have a whole new housing but didn't get rid the stupid design. The gearing is fine for me, too. Especially when paired with the 3.909. I doubt that the 3.545 rear gears are going to dry up, there are tons out there, and take a lot of abuse to break. I don't often see the 3.909 fail, but it's a rare piece and I wouldn't want to track a set down in 10 years, though.

Yeah it's still a 4spider with a junk floating cross shaft design. It would be worth the extra $1000 if they did a torsen or something.

Drive a car with that tall of a first gear once. Unless it's a stroker it sucks. It's so hard on the clutch.

My stock Evo 1 is 2.571:1, I have no issue with it whatsoever. Granted my final drive is shorter, and my tire diameter may be a touch smaller, but I like it.

Yeah this was my 3.909 with shorter Evo 3 third and fourth. I can't wait to do comparison video.

I have a feeling this is stop gap between an OEM trans and a dogbox. There is no way this can be as strong as a true Dogbox, but it should be great for cars in the 600-1000hp range. If 1000+ HP a full dogbox will still be necessary.

Yes and no. This kit isn't for race cars, it was made for big power, street-driven cars whose owners don't want dogboxes. You won't find many 1,000HP DSM street cars, so it doesn't have to have that kind of strength. It should have most of the strength of a dogbox since the gear is the 'same' except for the engagement style, it just can't be shifted like a dogbox.

I agree.

I have their dog straight cut gears and I intend to drive it on the streets :)

Waiting on PAR to make me a helical cut dog 5th gear so i can cruise on the highway without the noise.
Nice. What center are you running?
