Hello,

I am getting ready to have a thermal exhaust installed on my 1G along with a 3 inch high-flow converter and megan racing downpipe. For the people that have the thermal exhaust, is there any drone at cruising speeds with this exhaust? I have bought a CM performance resonator that I am trying to decide if I should worry about having added to the exhaust in an effort to minimize drone if there is any at all.

Seems like most articles on here regarding the thermal exhaust is around the 2G versions.

Thanks in advance!

I haven't put many miles on mine and the car has been down for a few months, but I don't remember ever thinking there was an exhaust drone.

I think the 2G version would be similar to a 1G version if not the same. Afterall, many of our parts are the same or close, a 2G exhaust manifold is looked as an upgrade & is interchangeable, it will have the same muffler, & minus the extra stuff for mounting the CAT will be the same too. I have a 2G & yes my exhaust has some droning & also adding a resonator will help minimze the droning more.

Thanks for the input, I do think that the thermal exhaust do differ from the 1g and 2g version based on the pictures that I have seen. However, I could be wrong. I guess I may just get the exhaust installed as is and see how it sounds. If it does indeed drone, I may go back and add the resonator at that point. I was just trying limit the amount of trips I was going to have to make to the shop. I spend most of time driving my talon on the interstate going to work (when it is nice out), and would really not like to have to deal with any annoying sounds.

Yes they 1G & 2G exhaust are physically different but the internal things related to the droning are similar & the physical shape isn't going to be diffrerent by much if any. My 2G does drone, it's minimal & not much of an issue for me. I don't notice it until I consciously focus on it & I have to roll up my windows & turn off the radio. If you're concerned with the droning of straight through exhaust add a resonator during the install & be done with it.

I run a full 3" thermal exhaust on my 1g and I think it's very quiet, with little to no drone noise. The muffler canister is quite a large oval shape which really helps quiet it and reduce drone noise IMHO. :thumb:

Thanks for the response. I was actually looking through your pictures trying to get a good idea of how the exhaust will look haha. Sounds like it will be exactly what I am hoping for then.

Back in the day it was THE exhaust to have. Good quality and looks good too. There is a guy on here who reduced droning by adding the stock downpipe brace back that connects to the block under the turbo. Maybe I'll one day I'll try that.

Yeah... The person that helps me with car recommends it too. It just so happens that the Thermal is about the only exhaust that is still available for the FWD 1g's beside what you can find on ebay. I am adding the megan racing downpipe at the same time so adding both is where my main concern came from. I think the resonator will be the solution if it does indeed drone. The CM performance resonator is the perfect size to fit before it bends up and over the rear suspension. I just hate to cut the exhaust up if it wasn't needed.
