Has anyone ran an Orbit/ACL oil pump?

I have only used a oem front cover and the acl front cover. Both oil pumps I took apart and deburred everything and rounded off any sharp edges. I WOULD NOT run a cheapo ebay pump. You get what you pay for. I wouldnt risk cheaping out on such a vital engine component. The clearances might be ok but metallurgically the gears might be shit. In fact id almost guarantee those gears are made out of some cheap steel.

Cheap steel or not properly hardened would be my guess , then there's the chance the aluminum will be porous with the cheaper casting but that's mere speculation.

I bought one of these pumps to use on my current rebuild in progress. I'm on this thread because I noticed out of the box that the oil pump shaft seal wasn't fully pressed in, it was actually seated crooked. When I pressed it in all the way, it appears to possibly be too far in. I checked my original OEM front case and it seems like there is a decent amount of space between the back of the seal and the bearing part of the oil pump shaft, whereas in the ACL pump, there is hardly any gap. Hopefully this doesn't give me any issues. Hopefully I'm wrong, but I'm almost anticipating a leak.

Also noticed that the crank seal wasnt pressed in all the way. Not the end of the world, but the fact that those 2 simple things made it through quality control kind of scare me. Especially on something as precise and crucial as an oil pump.

I would remove that pump and replace it. If for anything else .....peace of mind. At the minimum buy an acl pump.

Well knock the seals in and disassemble the pump and verify all is well. Your quality control here when your assembling anything on your engine don't trust the guy in China building pumps to give a shit. Measure gear clearance it's not that hard and it's just lazy to assume a part is good and throw it on. Never trust anyone's work but your own especially when you are the one out the monies and time.

I'll be checking gear clearances later this evening when I get back. I'll try to get a picture of the seal but there is a fair amount of grease slathered over it now.

Side question: there's the acl regular pump and performance pump does anyone know the difference...

Site says metalurolgy but wondering if it comes with straight cut gears

Checked gear clearances and they were within spec, I'll be finding out about the sprocket seal once I prime the engine.

One other snag I ran into was while installing the oil pan, the center bolt thread on the pump was off centered which resulted in me having to pull the pan back off and slightly elongate the hole on the pan to make it fit :banghead:. Pretty annoying but a simple fix. Cleaning all of the rtv off took a while though.

As far as the difference between the standard pump and the performance pump, I can't seem to see a difference. I got the performance pump which is supposed to be rated for higher RPM and oil pressure. Mine came with helical gears. Mine is for a 7 bolt though.

Hopefully this pump performs well despite these couple of issues I've had during installation.

An update. I will never opt to run one of these on any engine again. I got my engine mostly assembled and finally added oil and primed it, only to find a leak between the ACL front case and my oil filter bracket. OEM gaskets were used and all parts were installed following the procedure outlined in the FSM. Everything was perfectly dry and cleaned using brake clean and coffee filters.

To spend months and thousands of dollars building an engine only to have it 75% assembled on the stand and find out that a poorly made oil pump is going to set your build back even more time and money is a tremendous disappointment.

From having the crank and oil sprocket seals not pressed in fully or straight, to the oil pan bolt threads being slightly off enough to force me to modify my pan to fit, to now finding this leak, I do not trust this pump enough to run it on my engine.

Now I have to drain out all of the break in oil I literally just poured in, compromise my brand new OEM gaskets for the front case, oil filter bracket, turbo return, oil pickup, and my balance shaft plug. As well as pull and clean the RTV off of my oil pan/mating surface AGAIN.

My choice to purchase this oil pump has set my build time back and cost me an unnecessary amount of extra labor and money spent for me to have anything good to say about it at all.

From what I hear, some people have success with these pumps. I am not one of those people. I am really hoping that Extremepsi will take care of me as far as refunding me the cost of the pump and sending me all new gaskets and seals that are now rendered useless by this poor quality product. Otherwise, this is going to be a big hit on my build having to buy another set of gaskets along with a new OEM pump.

My reccomendation: DO NOT USE THIS PUMP.

Sorry to hear about this.. I was really hoping to hear good news about this pump...

If I were a business I would not refund you the gaskets. Thry werent the problem. Just my 2 cents. That stuff is cheap anyway.

Man now I don't feel so cheap reusing my old front case. Sorry about your luck that's unacceptable and unfortunately it seems a lot of aftermarket o.e. parts (o.e. used loosely here) has gone way down. I know I cringe whenever I cannot use motocraft parts at work and have to settle for aftermarket. I know at least if a motocraft part fails in its warranty time they at least stand behind the part and cover labor.

You have a leak ?Like oil is pouring out from underneath or is it seeping? If the surface is flat and the gaskets were installed correctly how is this even possible? It sounds like there is oil leaking from underneath?

So it leaked between the filter housing and the pump? Not the pump and the block?

Can you take a straight end and a feeler gauge and check for flatness? Just to compare against stock? Might make you return case with Extreme stronger...

I have run the ACL/Orbit pump on several builds with no issues what so ever... all have made over 450whp and spun 8500rpm on the pump without issues. Current engine is sitting at 3k road course track miles at 600+ whp. just my .02

Why is the “Best answer” a negative incident? I mean this kind of stuff happens all the time with parts. Apparently this guy had multiple red flags or things he thought was wrong and still choose to move on. YOU are last person responsible to check the quality before putting the parts into service. The oil pump is something that is extremely vital to your engine and letting multiple things go, let alone even modifying other parts to “make it fit” before first start and then have failure at startup is your own fault. If you don’t like how it looks when opening it, then send it back. You’ll have a way better time getting a refund or replacement with a uninstalled part then a sending back a now used part...

Just to add, I do in fact run a ACL pump. Installation was fine and does it’s job.

Is the Gasket that the Orbit ACL Oil Pump bring any good? Are you guys runing that Gasket and the other one?
