so I know that for tuning the best option would be to go with a gsx or a gst cause those have a turbo and gsx is awd however those are a bit expensive where I’m at and I have the opportunity to get a 95 2g eclipse rs really cheap basically free from a family friend so my question is, is it worth it to buy for tuning purposes? Btw I’m 16 and can’t afford a gsx so jusT curious to know if the rs is worth it?

Tuning? No. If you want a fast cat that isn't it. Is there support? Yes. It's beyond the scope of most folks in my opinion. Those that do have the skill to play with it usually go a different route. Gst or gsx are no longer expensive for what you get but of course that's relative. Free is good but I would not modify it. To each his own.

I actually bought a 1997 Eclipse RS about 3 weeks ago with the hopes of doing some engine mods. So if I'm understanding you correctly Pauleyman it's not really worth it? Cause I'm not having any luck finding a GSX or GST period and I bought this one for $800 with 175,000 miles on it. Would it really be too much work to put a turbo on it?

The easiest way to answer your question, is to ask you a question:

Would you spend the time and money to turbo a 1997 Dodge Neon Coupe?

I bring this up as many people trying to get into the DSM platform don't realize that the 420a Eclipse and the Neon share the same drivetrain. Do they make turbo kits for these cars? Sure. Is it worth it to spend the money and still not produce as much power as a 4G63t? That's up to each individual to decide.

I, personally, would skip it.

It depends on how much power you want. You can turbo the can , but a bare bones setup is going to cost you about $1500. To build something decent your looking at a few grand. That would get you around 180-200whp. About what a stock gst would make. You are better off selling the car if you want to make some decent power.

In short, what you bought is a A to B car that is sporty, it is not a platform to build speed on.. Sell it and save up for a GST or GSX if speed is what you are after..

If the purpose is to learn how to modify or tune the car then the car is not that important, but as it is mentioned above, if to tune the car to get high power is the purpose then people here will recommend you to buy one with 4g63.

I didn't mind how slow my N/A eclipse was. I loved it, it ran well, and I learned with it. The RS won't be fast until you have more to put into it but that doesn't mean it's a bad choice by any means. Especially if it's in decent shape and you read.

Personally, I wouldn't waste your time on an RS that has 175k on it. That's a lot of miles, you'd really want to do an engine overhaul before you got into any tuning and I'm thinking that's not financially in the cards for you. If you're just gonna drive it A to B like someone said above, it'll make a decent commuter, but I'd skip the tuning and hold off for a better platform when you're older and have more cash in hand.

Correct me if I'm wrong but there really isn't much as far as tuning optio ns with the stock Chrysler computer in those cars. You will be limited to bolt ons and piggy back controllers or jumping up to a microsquirt or some other stand alone. That'd be a good car to learn wrenching on but in the end I wouldn't dump much into modding it the end goal isn't there. I know a lot of people love them I'm just not one especially when a gsx although hard to find in decent unhacked shape anymore is difficult can be bought around 4 to 5k. Stock will smoke any bolt on or basic turbo 420a.

Look into nt spyders if you can't find a gst/gsx. They are cheaper and still have high potential.

I had an rs back in high school and it looked good with rims but certainly not a fast or tuner car. if your forum name is true I would stick to a saab! I love both Saabs and my dsm's but I wouldn't ever consider another 420a not ever! turbo is where it's at, sure the 420 can be turboed but why when it will cost more than a clean built gsx. If all show and no go is your thing then give it a go, but if your used to Saabs (boosted) you will hate an rs/gs. just my .02 and I really don't mean to possible on the 420a crowd cause I respect the numbers you all make, just not my thing.

This is the route I took. Nice thing about the Spyder GS is, (if you do the labor yourself), you can do a complete GST swap for the price of the 420a turbo kit. If you really wanna go crazy with it, you can even do an AWD swap on the Spyder. Much better option if you ask me.

If you can't afford even a basic GST, it's best just to keep saving. The maintenance on an $800, 175k mile RS is probably going to be steep, and will add up to the price of a better car quickly. I had a 1997 Neon Coupe as my first car. It wasn't fast, it wasn't glorious, but it taught me a hell of a lot about cars. Buy your first car as basic transportation, and for learning. Don't buy it to go fast.
