The Camaros and Mustangs were made in much greater numbers than the Dsm's were

Dsm Production Numbers
1988: 2,409
1989: 90,741
1990: 148,379
1991: 153,936

1996: 208,061
1997: 198,874
1998: 161,445
1999: 161,844
Total: 973,451

3 Year total production for ALL 1st gen Camaro was 841,731.

Mustangs are a totally different animal as far as rarity and price. Yeah they made something like 500,000 of them in 65 and then production kept up pretty good. But you can get a standard coupe roller for like 300-500 still. Hell I sold a running and driving vert that needed lots of rust repair for 800$ two years ago and it took nearly 6 months to sell it because I was trying to get at least a grand for it. But then you get fast backs and mach 1s going in the 6 figure prices.

The major issue with old muscle cars is rust, and the gas crisis. Those cars were garbage for over a decade. They weren't even sitting on junkyards waiting for people to pick them over. They were just being sent straight scrap, getting crushed out.

DSMs don't do that. Most cars don't do that these days. Yeah the turd buckets and wrecks get crushed out. But they aren't dealing with fact that are worth as much as garbage, and rust issue. Yeah we have shock tower rust, but old muscle cars had everything rust. Floor pan, rockers, hood, trunk, door jamb, frame rail, suspension, etc.

There were no 1988/89 Model Year DSM's. Where you getting this from?

Why? Do you understand why cars go up in value? DSMs aren't rare, aren't as desirable, and no where near as nice as a top end car.

They are cheap performance. Thats all.

I disagree. 10-15 years ago, I could search on craigslist within 100 miles of Detroit and find 100 DSM's for sale. Now, I'm lucky to find 1. If it is, it's a 2g car. I see person after person, gutting a 1g car to build their 2g car. Won't be long, there won't be many whole 1g cars, let alone 2g cars around. Lots of them are ending up in the yards or scrapped.

I'll throw in my 2 cents.

1) DSMs aren't going up in value any time soon because there isn't a strong, consistent demand for them. Sure, you hear about people sometimes selling spectacular, pristine DSMs with 25k invested for 10k or something but that's not common, nor is it enough to drive prices for regular POS DSMS up.
2) Cars like the Supra have held their prices well because they actually had a price to hold. Supras retailed for 40k, while your usual 1G was 12-14k, I believe. It's obvious that a 40k sports car would be worth more than a 13k sports car when both are the same age.
3) Supras were and are beautiful cars that are very well made. Aren't they known for bullet-proof drivelines and engines? They've basically owned the internet for the past 2 decades. A F&F movie didn't do that. They are awesome cars. We do realize an eclipse was in the movie too and nobody gives a shit about it. I could do a search on Craigslist and come up with 10 2gs in my major city that will sell for $1500 because nobody wants them.
4) How long do we have to wait for this price hike? The damn car is 20+ years old and they are all rotting outside some Pennsylvania townhouse right now. These things are getting crushed all day every day. How many Supras are getting crushed? None, because people want them.

I totally agree they were marketed to different segments. While the Supra was a luxury Grand Touring car, DSMs were Mitsubishi and Chrysler's pony car. What made the '65 Mustang a smashing success was that you could have all the looks for very little price, but if you wanted to, you could still pay up for a competitive drivetrain. Sounds familiar... Just like the Mustang from the height of the muscle car era, you could get into a base model DSM for a pittance back in the day, but remember, like the Mustang GT, you had to pay up for performance. AWD DSMs sold north of 28k; adjusted for inflation from 1995 that's 45k in 2017.

How many AWD DSMs are being crushed? Difference between base model DSMs (which to be fair still aren't being crushed left and right because that happened in mass over the last 10-15 years and there are none left... seriously, when's the last time you saw a 1.8L DSM?), and a base model Supra is that base supra still has potential. A naturally aspirated Supra still has a 2JZ (and RWD); a naturally aspirated DSM with a with a Neon motor, or a pathetic 4G32 is worthless as anything more than an economy car, just like 60s Mustangs--base model 6cyls still sell for a relative pittance. When I was a kid, 20 years on from when they were new, you could get V8 Mustangs for about five grand, just like AWD DSMs today....

I don't think any DSM ever sold for 28k. The very highest I could find was 20k in 1998 for an AWD Turbo. I see these cars getting crushed all the time. I'm a part of multiple national DSM groups and I see multiple a day getting sent to the crusher. There was a guy in Dallas who pissed a bunch of people off because he made a post where he took a baseball bat or something to 3 rollers that he couldn't sell. All 3 were in decent condition and he just destroyed them because nobody would pony any money up.

Really Cuz I am in the middle of the sticks in Alabama and can find plenty of them. Quit using craigslist as your sole tool. Craigslist is to complicated for idiots to use. You have to have an email, and an account, and its easier to do with a pc. There isn't an a phone app. 10 years ago people who wanted to list a car for sale used the newspaper and craigslist. Now craigslist is the newspaper, and they mostly use facebook, bat, offerup, and letgo. Im sure theres probably more apps, but bat, offerup, and letgo are most popular.

This is just facebook and craigslist, cars within 2 hours of me. Yeah the facebook search you can't filter by year, or if you can I dont know how to do it. But you can see facebook has 4-5 as many cars listed on there.

There are only 2 turbo 2gs for sale in Texas right now, 1 is mine and the other I low balled a running and driving 99 Spyder gst for $800 because I'm considering doing a manual swap.

More of these cars will be going straight to the crusher, because there are less on the road. Less people buying parts means more small towns crushing perfect parts cars or projects.

Value? Eh... Maybe in 15 years these cars will get up to first gen mustang pricing for 2g cars. 1g's may not get a bump, and vr4's may go down due to JDM vr4 imports and Evo imports

You are correct!

There are only 2 turbo 2gs for sale in Texas right now,

Thats crazy and a bit hard for me believe, considering I know there are 2 turbo talon's for sale within 2 hours of me along with a GSX, 3 GSTs, 2 1g turbo cars, and a GST Spyder. All of that in a state much smaller than Texas. With a lot less population.

I have the original window sticker for my 97 auto gsx and it was just a hair under 28k. Came with just about every option available. These cars are cheap because they are all usually modded and hacked all to hell. Most of the top dollar ones are pretty low mileage stock cars (well some are modded). But it also depends on what the car is worth to the buyer. Your value will differ from mine.

Hmm, well I stand corrected then. Still a good 15k under a Supra considering inflation and such.

One thing I've noticed is A LOT of 2gs are showing up BEAT TO SHIT. It's as if every broke asshole in the world blew one up, then tried to rebuild it but quickly ran out of money. Seriously, every single 2g is getting sold as a pile of parts...and the parts are all knockoff, ebay stuff.

The 98 Talon in the classifieds today is a rare example. It shows a window sticker price of 25000.00 when new, just very hard to find now with low miles and even fair condition. The latest ad looks like it was a well maintained car since it was new. :)

Thats correct, the GSX was not far from the price of the Supra, the Supra was a little more because it was considered a super car, quality wise ask and Supra owner how much "quality" went into that car LOL, nothing but constant issues with them, electrical, mechanical, interior etc. You can find Supras around here for under $1000 depending on the generation (much like Dsm's), AGAIN the 99' Fast and Furious "video game" body style is more popular because of well...Fast and Furious and video games that feature that body as a "hero" car with fake sound effects and fake performance that appeals to the kiddies, just like the 2g eclipse did after the green car in the Fast and Furious, dont ever discount what media did for the Supra.

Several locals have and or had 99' style Supra's and they are money pits that rarely run for long without needing work. The 2jz Lexas can be found in local junk yards every day of the week, zero parts under the hood removed and get crushed intact, no one is willing to pay $150 for the engine, again things depend on where you live, around here a clean 2G brings GOOD money, 10-15k isnt unusual for a stock one. Just to add, my buddy just sent me an ad for a 89' Supra clean and running for $500, if your so in love with the Supra then go buy one! dont however try to rip on the Eclipse on an Eclipse enthusiast site because your angry that you cant find a reasonaby priced Supra in your area, the 4g63 has accomplished (and continues to btw) MUCH more than the 2jz ever has or ever will.

Wait wait, you're trying to lump in the MK3 Supra with the MK4 Supra? Are you serious, my dude? Nobody gives a shit about the MK3 supra? Of course they go for nothing because the Supra to get is the MK4. You might as well lump a 1982 RS V6 Camaro in with a 2012 ZL1. They're both Camaros right?

I do love Supras but I'm not dropping 40k on a toy car. I prefer my cheap DSM, and I am completely content knowing I'll never be the fastest or nicest car in town.

Once again, I'm totally confused by your statements. The 4g63 is more accomplished? The STOCK BLOCK 2JZ record is over a 1000WHP

The record 2JZ 1/4 mile time is in the 5's.......http://www.2jzpower.com/

I gotta say I'm with Vegas on this one. MK3 vs MK4 on the Supra really is no comparison. And sure the Lexus has a 2JZ but its NA and not that many people do 2JZ swaps that every Lexus is going to be missing the motor out at the Junkyard. But that's not really the point anyway. What drives the price of the MK4 Supra up is that only around 10 thousand of them were made over 5 years. And it has a great body lines and some other unique things that you can't get in every car of the era. That is what pushes it up to be a 40K car. Same with the NSX or the Skylines from the era, its the exclusivity that people are willing to pay for. If any of those were as available as our cars I guarantee you they would still be as popular just not nearly as expensive.

What I don't understand and never will is the STOCK vintage car market. I own a 1966 Mustang love it and will never sell it. But I love how it looks not how it functioned in 1966. The car would not be what it is to me without modern touches of disc brakes and fuel injection with a big stroked V8. I would never spend 100K on a stock fully restored 1966 fastback. Because at the end of the day its a brand new shitty handling and slow old car.

Same with our cars. Who wants to buy a STOCK GSX for 30K today? It could be the lowest mileage DSM out there. Why would you want a bone stock DSM to keep that way? They are slow by today's standards. Even your average sedans today could take them in stock form. Guys like us want a stock DSM because they know it hasn't been screwed with by somebody else so its in good shape for when they start their mods. But you can't go out and buy a new car that has the looks of a 2G they are great looking cars and again have cool features with the turbo engine and modability that I don't think will come again. That's why I have one. I don't doubt the value of a stock low mileage DSM will go up as less and less of them are out there. But that's why it will is simply because their will be less out there. Unfortuneatly, the cleanly modded cars will have a hard time ever coming up in value simply because they are modified which to me will always be the part that doesn't make sense.

No model year, but production started before 90...

DSM's started in 1990. Period.

And, there is no way production started in 1988. 1990 would have started production in late 1989, being sold as 1990 Model vehicle. Like EVERY automaker on the planet.

values of a car not desired by the collector market will only go up when inflation makes them go up because the price of other used sh;tboxes also go up.

plus, if values would go up to collector levels for the average used DSM (they won't), most of us won't be able to hoard parts, cars and parts cars:D

Facebook is no different. I search within 100 miles of Flint or Detroit, 30 tops total.

Frankly, Facebook sucks for ads. The worst. Search feature sucks. Looking through 100's of ads is difficult. Though they slowly continue to add more features to make it more friendly. It's still shit. try editing your ad on the 10 pages you posted it on. But I guess it fits the "instant gratification" generations fine. Somehow.

Craigslist would decimate all if they would make the search area feature to a larger area. (pick 100-1000 miles) And quite changing the dam site or the mobile version. Anyone recall Craiglook? Read this: https://news.claz.org/2010/10/18/craiglook-shut-down-by-craigslist/. That's when search engines took a shit. Look at the drop is craigslist traffic.

Nice! So cool to have a window sticker for the car. I actually found the window sticker for my 92 6/4 auto in the glove box, clear in the bottom. Always fun to look at.

Mark my words. Stock cars will become rare. Everyone is looking for a stock car, to then go out and mod the shit out of. Look at what rolls into the Shootout. Everyone's minty, modded to hell and back, car. I never understood those that would buy a stock car to then molest, than buy a car that's already setup to heavily mod/drag race. SO many cars I see locally, going to the scrap yard that were "built cars" at one point, gutted and send to the yard.

I agree completely. That's kinda what I was trying to get out with my long drawn out post. Stock cars end up rare because everyone mods. Everyone wants a stock car when they start to mod. But the funny thing is in the end no one really wants a completely stock DSM. They want a DSM modded to their liking.

I think his point could be better said, in that, the 4G63 is the equivalent of the smallblock 350 in the 4 cyl world. More accomplished? I'd say yes. More platforms. Longer duration. More widely known and used.
