Hey my name is Levi, I’m looking into buying a gs-t and I’ve attached the things the guy has done to it. It has a knock which doesn’t bother me because I plan on it becoming my new project. I also plan on tearing it all the way down to bare bones and slowly building it back up. I want to get it to around 400whp but want it to be a street legal race car roll cage and all. It will also be a show car obviously. I don’t know much about the 4g63t but I’ve always loved the body style and finally found myself in a position to buy one. Any advice will help, parts and certain brands and such. Tunes? It’ll be a weekend summer car as well

If you want a 2g, it's a great platform. Like Pauleyman asked, it all comes down to the asking price whether it's a good deal or not. I bought my 98 GST with just timing off and a bad injector for $500. I know that's lucky. But for a knocking rod. I would't pay much more than that. If you plan to pay a couple grand or more, it's your money. I wouldn't. I also wouldn't plan to make it a show car.. but that's your preference too. It's never going to be a 70's muscle car value show car. All the money put into it will be for self pleasure, no one else will care or pay you for the modifications you do.

But buy the car if you want it and welcome to the forum! We will be happy to help with you with your quest. Hope you get a good deal!

Yes real 16g and I’m getting The gst and a gs in trade for a lancer gts with a salvage title and no fifth gear. It’s the 4b12 so I can’t mod it at all I don’t expect it to top quality show car but 4 friends and I are renting out a garage to all build cars together and I’ve always want to build on of these because I’m just in love with the look. The knock doesn’t bother me to much because I plan on stripping it and building everything for the most part something that will take some time and definitely some money but it’s somthing I’ll be proud of in the end

Just realized my grammar was super bad and I apologize haha but any help on where to start with the build and what brands are good but not super expensive
Everything is very appreciated!! Ive never built a motor past the year of 1977 so I don’t know much about the electronic parts and function of the newer stuff, I have lots of research to do so any help there is also much appreciated!

The two most popular tuning solutions are EVOscan and DSMlink. Based on what is already on the car, it should have one of those already. You can find just about anything you will need on this site as long as you follow the rules and are polite, people are very helpful. Compared to new cars, i would say that the electronics on these cars are fairly basic. It shouldn't take you too long to figure it out as long as you are mechanically inclined. Getting used to boost may be a bigger stretch. Also, keep in mind that a blown engine gs-t with those mods is worth maybe 1000$ depending on mileage and condition and a gs is practically worth nothing unless it is super nice.

Welcome and good luck!

Im no mechanical genius but I know enough to build one just not one of these particularly haha we’ll both cars are rust free and in pretty good condition as well as low miles so that’s good I think he sold the tuner separately, trust me I’m getting the better deal this way but getting off track alittle, any tips or things to look out for on these cars?

Rust around the strut towers under the hood, rust in front of the rear tire in the wheel well area, if its the stock engine and its knocking it could have crankwalked, I would swap a 6 bolt engine into it just for peace of mind, if you want to live replace all ball joints as soon as you get the car apart. Do some searching on here under "6 bolt swap" "crankwalk" "strut tower rust" etc. Cheap parts arent good and good parts arent cheap period, dont buy cheap buy good.

Just remember, with these cars, if you do the maintenance, they will love you. If you slap parts on, ignore the maintenance, by cheap parts when you shouldn't (sometimes it is ok to go cheap), and don't do your homework beforehand, we will see another thread of "why are these cars junk". It sounds silly, but it happens all the time.

Also, even if you think it isn't, it is probably a boost leak.

Crankwalk is a over-hyped problem that happens to 7 bolt engines (post 1992.5) but before 1998. The crank ends up thrusting into the thrust washers till it wears them out and the engine has to be rebuilt. A 6-bolt engine has 6 flywheel bolts and is from the earlier cars. it is slightly different in some aspects, but would work just fine in your car and would theoretically be stronger. Depending on who you ask it is either a necessity or pointless.

Okay so a 6 bolt is the 1g 4g63 engine? And is the crankwalk a common thing with the 2g gsts? And how exactly would I know if it has crankwalk when tearing it apart?

I mean to offend you with this, so take it this way, what makes you think you are anywhere near qualified to rebuild this motor when you have no idea what you're doing ?

I’ve rebuilt lots of motors but new to the 4g63. That’s why I’m asking what things I should be looking out for, I mean that’s the logical thing in my opinion. I’m doing plenty of research on everything. It’s not like I’m mechanically retarded and don’t how to replace blinker fluid. I’m just asking for peoples opinions on certain aspects. Have you ever built a 56 Ford 312? Because I’m sure you haven’t most people don’t even know what it is (it’s a y block if you’re curious was also only made for 3-4 years). Wouldn’t the logical thing to Do when working on cars you don’t have a lot experience with be to ask people that do? Or would you just jump in blind? I’m not here to piss anyone off just here to ask questions and do research.

Logical, by all means you have every component and specification available at your finger tips.

Try out www.vfaq.com dsm site. There are many specific write ups available
Sweet thanks man I appreciate the help! I’ve always wanted to build one of these cars because I love how they look and feel and around here there aren’t many in great shape. So I’m excited to start it just want to know everything I can
